I just looked and didn't find it, but have missed threads a few times as seem to always look in wrong place. If there is a thread please can you tag me in it?

Time for me to go to bed, interesting night of results, I know it's not over yet....but sleep is calling

mamapolenta · 27/05/2019 01:21

I walked into my polling station knowing I wanted to vote for a remain party but not knowing whether to put the cross in the Lib Dem or Green box. My OH was exactly the same. When we came out I'd voted Lib Dem, him Green. As far as we were both concerned, our votes were sending the same message

It’s a bit of a stretch to say the labour vote is a leave vote. The current position at the top is sort of sitting on the fence while half-heartedly talking about a second referendum. The two candidates at the top of our list are very vocally pro-remain. There’s absolutely no way that can meaningfully be counted as a leave vote.

Agree.

There is a mass pro-European movement in the UK, and we are not going anywhere.

Seb Dance (Labour MEP for London)

Not exactly a statement of an intention to leave.
Jeremy Corbyn has completely misjudged the position and he should resign. He has failed Labour voters at the very time when clear leadership was essential.

LeSquigh · 27/05/2019 04:00

I don’t know whether to laugh out loud or be furiously angry at some of the statements on here.

I voted Leave, still want to leave and voted Brexit Party in these elections for this reason. ALL of those who voted for Brexit Party want to leave and want the government to hurry the fuck up and carry out Leave NOW. Not ALL of those who voted Green or Lib Dem are Remainers. For anyone to claim that the country is or ever has been since 2016 “a country full of Remainers”, PLEASE finally concede that this is not true because you are quite frankly making yourselves look utterly stupid.

My OH voted Lib Dem, because he likes their politics. He also voted Remain BUT he strongly believes that the will of the people (which it was, no matter how you put a spin on it to suit you) should be carried out. I myself voted Lib Dem in the recent local elections because they are very good in my area but would never vote for them on a national level.

Yes Nigel Farage and Co can be a bunch of dicks but other than purposely spoiling my ballot paper I had no option but to vote for Brexit Party.

The message is clear, the public voted for Brexit, they have shown that this is still the case were the referendum to happen again now, and want it carried out ASAP.

I know and associate with far more that voted Leave and very few that voted Remain.

For those of you still wittering on about how the country would actually vote differently now, it is time to get a grip and accept you are so very wrong.

Tavannach · 27/05/2019 04:01

Remain parties: 40.4%
Hard Brexit parties: 34.9%
Conservatives/Labour: 23.2%

BigSexyCrimeUnit · 27/05/2019 04:07

I’m thrilled. Nigel Farage didn’t do anywhere near as well as he thought he would. If this was as good as it gets for him then it just wasn’t good enough. There was no Leave majority and Labour got the kicking it needed to get off the fence - oh, and the Tories were annihilated. No Deal will never get through Parliament now.

madeyemoodysmum · 27/05/2019 06:43

Agree with lesquigh

This vote like it or not has shown a majority in all areas Barr London that people want brexit.

I was a leaver now I don’t actually care either way I just want a decision made and it seen through.

Cwenthryth · 27/05/2019 07:29

No Deal will never get through Parliament now.
It doesn’t need to though - it’s still the default position, everything is in the hands of whomever the next Prime Monster* is, and all options are technically still possible.

If you add in Conservative votes to your aggregation - as discussed, they did stand on a clear leave manifesto - it’s Leave 44%, Remain 40.4%, yes with a significant majority of leavers likely ok with no deal. It’s entirely unclear that the result of a second referendum would be remain, and you can’t take these results as a straight second referendum substitute anyway, as there’s too many confounding factors - variance in turnout (both in comparison to a referendum and relatively between remain/leave areas as well I believe), eligibility to vote (EU citizens could vote in these) etc. IMO the remain vote was strong, but not strong enough to actually stop Brexit as things stand.

Also - Brexit Party did win about what they were predicted to - you can’t downplay or deny that.

*©️my autocorrect yesterday, I like it and will keep it for a while I think Grin

YoghurtPlease · 27/05/2019 08:00

I think although the remainers have made their feelings clear with the Lib Dem vote, there’s not a true tally between these elections and the result of another referendum. Only 30% of voters turned out for these elections, I think the turn out would be much higher for a second referendum, I want to think the remainers would pip the post but sadly, I fear the leavers would.

Personally I am horrified that anyone would want The Brexit party representing our views in Europe. Lead by Farage - a man unelectable to the UK parliament, they’ve been a one issue party for 6 weeks. What are their views on climate change, education, workers’ rights? Hopefully they have some but all I ever hear is Brexit - we were a country with values and an opinion before Brexit and we will be when this whole fiasco concludes, either way. If we remain in Europe these politicians with no agenda other than ‘Nigel, Nigel, Brexit, Brexit, Nigel’ will be left to represent us Angry.

If we leave the EU the Brexit party will disappear as quickly as it has appeared leaving division and destruction in its wake and then what? Two major parties, loathed by the electorate. No EU holding us to a higher standard in climate change policies, food standards, workers’ rights. I absolutely despair.

LolaSmiles · 27/05/2019 08:07

Looking at the Brexit party outcomes I am astounded that so many people want to vote for a party thay ran without a manifesto, has had questions raised about its funding through PayPal with limited checks on where they money comes from, and led by an extreme right winger who wants to be the Uk's Trump, has repeatedly called for the dismantling and privatisation of the NHS and is in talks with Steve Bannon about a new right wing group.

If people wanted to leave the EU, they could have voted conservative, not vote for a piece of scum who thinks holding a pint makes him friendly.

Well done Britain.

GoldenRule · 27/05/2019 08:16

@lolasmiles agree with you!

madeyemoodysmum · 27/05/2019 09:01

Lolasmiles. No one wanted Teresa’s crap deal that basically made us a slave to EU

That gives us three options

Get a better deal - unlikely to achieve this
No deal - scary
Remain - massive chunk of the uk obv don’t want this either from the result

So it’s all open back to the beginning basically

Tory’s achievement-0
Labour need anew leader pronto

People are desperate and looking elsewhere

And also those of you convinced every green vote is a remain. I’m still a leaver at heart. I voted green for environmental issues and I don’t like anyone else at present.

madeyemoodysmum · 27/05/2019 09:06

Also I believe there is a fairly large number who won’t admit to voting no deal but there there waiting to vote

LolaSmiles · 27/05/2019 11:01

But with her announcing she would be standing down and enough hard line brexiteers standing ready to take her place, the Conservatives are still a logical vote for leave voters.

I'm a remain voter. I voted lib dems on the grounds that green wouldnt stand a chance in my area. I accept people would want to vote for a party to implement Brexit. What I dont understand is why they'd vote for a party thats having its funding reviewed ran by a bunch of xenophobes with undoubtedly personal financial gains to be had from Brexit who are ready to create a far right group with Steve Bannon.

Not all leave voters are racist. I dont agree with attacking leave voters. But the swing to the Brexit party does leave me with questions about the rise of nationalism in this country.
