Same here, OJ and lasagne. Still treats for me! :-)

BertieBotts · 25/05/2019 20:40

We always had juice, but defo to fruit (anything other than apples, bananas and satsumas anyway) - especially grapes for some reason, did they used to be very expensive? I am always amazed to find grapes very cheaply now. And we can buy massive tubs of blueberries in Aldi, whereas I had never tasted a blueberry as a child. DS2 has eaten so many he is sick of them Confused

Yoghurts YY especially Muller corners. In fact I wonder if this is a weird UK/Germany thing because I am constantly amazed to see Muller corner yoghurts for sale in Germany for about 50 cents or 29 cents when on special offer. I swear I remember them being over a pound each? But perhaps I am wrong. Anyway we buy them loads now and I feel all indulgent.

Cherry tomatoes/tomatoes on the vine that have an actual aroma/flavour.

Getting a takeaway or fast food. I don't want to admit how often we do this Blush

On Sundays after mass, we were taken to the local newsagents for a tenpenny bag.

Same! After Mass on Sunday morning, my dad would stop at the sweet shop and we woukld have a little bag of sweets.
Once a fortnight the pop man would call, and my mom would buy a bottle of dandelion and burdock and we would have a glass each (3 kids). So exciting!!

eurochick · 25/05/2019 20:45

Ribena. Orange and lemon squash were for every day.

YoThePussy · 25/05/2019 20:46

Time40 you had a shoebox? Luxury. We lived in a puddle along with six other families.

Butterscotch Angel Delight made with top of the milk (remember that). Only had on holidays in Cornwall where the milk was extra creamy.

Vienettas or Vendettas as we called them.

The ultimate treat which we had when staying with our Gran was fishfingers for breakfast and bread and butter.

I still only drink orange juice at breakfast time!

Tana433 · 25/05/2019 20:46

Do you remember the powdered orange juice, i think it was called "Rise and Shine"? I loved that when i was little and Wagon Wheels that were massive in my hand. Not the same now although i do realise my hand is bigger these days!

pink412 · 25/05/2019 20:48

Sugar sandwiches (and I wonder sky I have problems with my teeth)

Or sweets and fizzy drinks. When I could afford my own I bought loads

WitsEnding · 25/05/2019 20:49

Chocolate digestives. Fizzy drinks were a treat but I never really liked them. Clotted cream on puddings - but the puddings were lovely, all homemade and we had one every day.

80sapplemac · 25/05/2019 20:49

Shared bar of galaxy on sat night's

AuntieMarys · 25/05/2019 20:50

Cod liver oil and malt.
Horlicks tablets.
My dad marketed them well Wink

nixso29 · 25/05/2019 20:50

On the rare occasion we were taken out for a meal we always had to pick from the specials menu. And never would you have dared ask for dessert, my dads favourite was 'you can have ice-cream when we get home' to this day I still feel like I'm getting such a treat when I'm out for dinner and order a dessert!

Seahawk80 · 25/05/2019 20:50

We used to call coke "Christmas juice"! I actually think my parents had a pretty good attitude to drinks, we were allowed squash in the day but only water with meals. Even now I can only drink water (or wine!) with meals and find it bizarre when DH sits down to dinner having poured himself an orange juice

Aimily · 25/05/2019 20:50

Oj here too, especially with the bits in it. We were only allowed a small glass that mum poured, otherwise myself and DB would drink the big bottle in a couple of days.
Jelly is the other one I remember being a treat that we only had in the house occasionally.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 25/05/2019 20:50

Being sent to the corner shop for a bottle of Tizer on a Sunday as a treat once or twice a year.

RedRiverShore · 25/05/2019 20:51

Fruit malt loaf and butter
Corona
Those Lyons individual fruit pies in a box about 4-5 inches square similar to mr Kiplings, they were a real treat

dreamyflower · 25/05/2019 20:53

Pure orange, coke, choc ices, grapes, squash.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 25/05/2019 20:54

Satsumas at Christmas, also cigars, for my Dad not me! Brown sugar sandwiches, thick butter and white bread

thegreylady · 25/05/2019 20:54

A paper cone of sugar with a stick of rhubarb to dip in or blackberries from the hedge mashed with the top of the milk.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/05/2019 20:56

Pop from the pop man. 6 bottles now and again. One small glass a day and not every day. A bar of dairy milk on payday. A strip of 3 squares each. Fast food wasn't a big thing, just starting. I remember going to Pizza Hut with mum and dad and sharing a small pizza. If we went to Sydney we stopped at one of the very first McDonald's.We were amazed.

afterashowerr · 25/05/2019 20:57

Yes to Lucozade, I had to be really poorly. Remember having it when having mumps

YoThePussy · 25/05/2019 20:59

I remember Rise and Shine, great stuff.

Also just remembered visiting my Auntie and the treat of tinned salmon mashed with vinegar as a sandwich filling. Her son was almost grown up and used to laugh at my sisters and my excitement at them. His lovely wife still makes them for us now if we go to lunch!

Captaindobbin · 25/05/2019 21:00

Grapes and strawberries and melon. I’m not even that old and these were definitely treats growing up.

ItProtectsMyHead · 25/05/2019 21:03

York Fruits. My grandmother always got them at Christmas but no other time, so I assumed they were fancy and special. Still fond of them now.

Gottoloveabagel · 25/05/2019 21:04

I'd forgotten about horlics tablets, I remember buying them from Boots as a treat!

Oliack1417 · 25/05/2019 21:10

Gino ginelli ice cream, and vienetta!
