Fizzy drinks.....except for once when a lorry crashed at the end of our road and we were suddenly allowed as much coke as our mum could rescue!

FrenchyQ · 26/05/2019 20:21

Supermousse
Fizzy drinks
Pickled onions only for Sunday tea , same for prawn cocktail (made with tinned prawns)

francienolan · 26/05/2019 21:06

It isn't something I eat a lot now but McDonald's was The Treat. My mom and I used to share a happy meal. I only really wanted the toy, which at the time were little dolls.

Treat dinners for me were a chicken breast with little tubs of cheesy mash. I'm not sure why this was such a big deal but it felt special!

FurrySlipperBoots · 26/05/2019 21:23

Scrambled egg for breakfast! We only had it if we were recovering from a really nasty illness, or made on a camping stove after spending the night in tents in the garden.

Proseccoagain · 26/05/2019 21:36

Corona fizzy pop, only allowed on a Saturday evening.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 26/05/2019 22:35

Plums (seasonal)
Melon
Fresh orange juice
Arctic roll
Tinned fruit salad with tinned cream
Dates
Any bread that wasn't an ordinary sliced loaf
Salmon
Findus crispy pancakes
Peanut butter

llangennith · 26/05/2019 22:44

Tinned fruit cocktail on a Sunday.
Not a treat for me as I hated most of the fruits in it.

Lwmommy · 27/05/2019 07:06

Tinned plums and custard was a good one.

We also got a monthly Chinese takeaway

My dad had chicken omelette and chips to himself,

mum, me and 2 brothers would share a portion of chicken balls, chicken fried rice and any chips dad didn't want.

BenWillbondsPants · 27/05/2019 07:37

Every Wednesday the Alpine lorry would come round and my sister and I would run out with the previous weeks glass bottles. We'd get a bottle of limeade, orangeaid and coke (all florescent!). Mum would say the same thing every week 'when it's gone it's gone, I'm not buying any more!' and it would last about a day.

Except in summer when sometimes mum would hide a bottle and randomly produce ice cream floats for us when we were roasting in the garden. My mum was awesome. Happy days.

rosybell · 27/05/2019 07:57

My younger siblings used to think ice cubes were a treat..

Mominatrix · 27/05/2019 08:02

Sounds wierd, but canteen food.

When I was young, we only ate homemade food which would invariably be Korean, and when we went out for food, it would be to Korean, Japanese, or Chinese. A real treat would be to go to the hospital where my Dad worked on a Saturday whilst he rounded on his patients and we'd go to the canteen for lunch. We'd eat exotic foods like meatloaf, turkey/stuffing/gravy, chicken pot pie, etc. We'd get Jell-o for pudding and get rubbery white rolls. It was considered a real treat.

When I got older and had lunch at school, canteen food very quickly lost it's charm.

ProfYaffle · 27/05/2019 08:19

Tinned fruit. My parents were quite avant garde for our estate, we had tinned guava and strawberries, served in it's juice with Tip Top poured over.

I also remember some sort of frozen 'cream', came in small cans and had to be whipped when it was defrosted? I used to love that.

AdaColeman · 27/05/2019 13:25

Every summer we would go to stay with my Grandmother in Northumberland, and a huge treat there were the wonderful blueberry pies she made.

Blueberries were imported from Scandinavia into Newcastle for a very short season, about a month or less, and were snapped up as soon as they appeared.
Where we lived in Kent, they were never available, so were a real exotic summer treat at Grandma's. I'm amazed to see them everywhere these days!

motherheroic · 27/05/2019 13:31

McDonalds....that we would have almost every single day because we lived next to the drive thru.

Mom always used to hype it up as a 'treat' because there was a stretch of time when she just couldn't be bothered to cook Grin

motherheroic · 27/05/2019 13:33

An ACTUAL treat I would have was a boiled egg and a small amount of coffee sprinkled in my tea every weekend from my grandad. But only if I woke up early enough!

Lwmommy · 27/05/2019 14:25

@profyaffle that's reminded me of frozen cream sticks. Think we used to get them from Beejam (before it became Iceland) in a big bag and then would take 2 or 3 sticks and defrost them in a little jug. Except my dad who would eat them like ice lollies.

spellingtest · 27/05/2019 16:11

BrigitsBigKnickers · 27/05/2019 21:11

We used to have half a mars bar each on a Friday night. My sister and I used to cut it into tiny little slivers to make it last longer.

hereiam19 · 27/05/2019 21:26

Shloer we only ever had on it Christmas Day! My mum still just buys it at Christmas

iMatter · 27/05/2019 21:31
