What was a "treat" in your house growing up that

Actually was just a normal food or drink? Mine was pure orange juice my parents only bought it at Christmas Confused

Angel delight here too (so much so it was wrapped and given as a birthday present!) and multipack cereal, only on holidays. McDonalds I only had a handful of times growing up, so it was a very big treat for me! Also pom bears we only had once or twice a year when we had a teddy bears picnic in the garden.

Treats were frowned upon in our house (70's) Grin

My mum used to buy a packet cheesecake mix, that was our Sunday treat. Viennetta didn't feature until the 90s after I'd left home; my mother still proudly offers me a slice when I visit Confused

Getting sweets from the big selection at Woolworth’s - again once a year. A trip to a tearoom - maybe once a year. For tea and biscuits.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 25/05/2019 20:30

Bacon butties for breakfast. Only ever on Christmas Day morning.

Eustasiavye · 25/05/2019 20:30

Angel delight at my aunt's house.
Coke and crisps very occasionally.
Lucozade was given when I was ill. It used to come in big glass bottles and had an orange wrapper.

Undies1990 · 25/05/2019 20:30

Instant whip (chocolate flavour)

Iced bun from the bakers - lovely 😊

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 25/05/2019 20:31

Plus we never had fast food and once or twice a year my dad would get a voucher from work for him to go for a nice meal and instead he'd spend the money on a takeaway for the whole family so we only had a Chinese takeaway about twice a year and it was a really big deal.

FurrySlipperBoots · 25/05/2019 20:31

Oh, and ham and pickle flavour Brannigans crisps. Does anyone remember them? We had the crisps regularly but there was only one pack of those (the best flavour!) in every multipack so my brother and sister and I fought tooth and nail for it.

Frouby · 25/05/2019 20:31

Tinned tuna.

I remember my mum mixing some with vinegar at Christmas and declaring it was as nice as the (tinned) salmon we only ever had at Christmas. And that was only because it came in a hamper out of the club (catalogue) which she then paid back weekly at something like 25p a week.

Fruit was bought weekly, split into brown paper bags and you got given your share to last.

Mushrooms were also a bit treaty. Unless they were picked by us. Massive big field mushrooms that sometimes had grubs in them.

BishopBrennansArse · 25/05/2019 20:32

Vienetta

Foxmuffin · 25/05/2019 20:32

A strawberry corner yogurt. We got one a week when the food shop was done!

elfies · 25/05/2019 20:33

Conny Onny sandwiches (condensed milk )

Wavingwhiledrowning · 25/05/2019 20:33

Hotdogs. As in a tin of hot dogs, a bread roll and ketchup. Man, those were some special days. Smile

Now I give my children hot dogs and feel eternally guilty.

sue51 · 25/05/2019 20:33

Tinned fruit with evaporated milk was a treat for birthdays only.

joystir59 · 25/05/2019 20:33

A stick of raw rhubarb and some sugar in a brown paper bag to dip the rhubarb in.

Cherylshaw · 25/05/2019 20:34

We only got custard creams in our house I loved Christmas or Hogmanay when we would get a tin of chocolate biscuits or shortbread but they were rationed and would last ages

whitetoblerone · 25/05/2019 20:34

White bread!

MitziK · 25/05/2019 20:34

A begrudging spoonful of chicken breast or a bit of cold meat picked off the carcass.

Youngest child, perpetually angry parent who thought meat was too good for children and we were just being fussy because we didn't like reformed meat in breadcrumbs or what tasted like 1% meat sausages (burned to a crisp) so didn't deserve any more than the bare minimum so we couldn't go to school and say we only got potatoes, tinned carrots and gravy - I got one wing, next brother got the other and some of the bit around the body, next one (GC) got one entire breast and anything else he wanted, next one got two legs even though he was the one working and paid for the fucking thing. The rest went to our mother either in her Sunday meal or cold for lunch the following day whilst we were at school.

Oh, and milk to actually drink. Not for children, apparently (but soda stream was, as that worked out cheaper than milk).

TwitterQueen1 · 25/05/2019 20:34

Banana

Best treat was condensed milk whipped up with jelly to make a mousse Grin. Absolute height of decadence.

We never had fish as it was too expensive and I can't really eat it to this day.

Arabuella · 25/05/2019 20:35

Cremola Foam at Christmas.

joystir59 · 25/05/2019 20:35

2 ounces of chocolate chewing nuts. A choc ice. A dozen orange jubly.

Megsheeran · 25/05/2019 20:36

My parents took the Good Life to heart, everything home grown and home made. My treat on my birthday was tinned peas, instant mash and a Frey Bentos pie followed by a tinned steamed pudding - bliss! 😂

BendydickCuminsnatch · 25/05/2019 20:36

OJ for us was only a small glass at breakfast too, but I always understood that was because it was expensive and we’d run out too quickly, not so much because it was a treat.
We should have had more treats really - we were allowed chocolate every day after school so they were just normal rather than treats! Bit of a problem now as I find it hard to go without! If we’d have had it less it would have been more of a treat and more special.

floraloctopus · 25/05/2019 20:38

mashed potato

Guerlainista · 25/05/2019 20:39

Fizzy drinks were for birthday parties or Christmas. A week before Christmas my mum would buy 2 litre bottles of coke, R Whites lemonade + one other we wanted (I liked cherryade). Very exciting.

Vienneta ice cream and those Danish butter shortbread biscuits in a tin were strictly served by my grandad about twice a year at visits to his house.

Boxed chocolates (quite shit ones like Milk Tray, All Gold, Roses) were Xmas or special occasions.

Frozen pizza and micro chips were a Friday night treat late 80s. Mum cooked from scratch so found all this new fangled junk food very weird. We found it very exciting!
