What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Never been to those OP, but the pyramids....disappointed. Not as grand as the brochures make out

TeenTimesTwo · 24/05/2019 16:49

Venice as a child. It was hot, and we had to walk everywhere, and DM wouldn't let me have an ice-cream. A lot of the buildings looked shabby. I think I had confused it with somewhere I had seen on Newsround with houses on stilts and boats everywhere (Burma?).

Rafflesway · 24/05/2019 16:50

Petra!

The "Treasury" is tiny! Indiana Jones makes it look spectacular 😁.

Wheelerdeeler · 24/05/2019 16:51

Rome. Didn't like it at all

Isthebigwomanhere · 24/05/2019 16:52

Santorini
It's absolutely hell on Earth when the cruise ships arrive

ElspethFlashman · 24/05/2019 16:52

The Coliseum. Too full of tour parties and reeked to high heaven of horse piss on a boiling hot day.

And you were fairly limited in what parts you could explore. Oh well.

CleverQuacks · 24/05/2019 16:52

The Maldives. Sure the sea was gorgeous (the best snorkelling I have ever done) but the rest of it was very meh.

Backwoodsgirl · 24/05/2019 16:54

The pyramids were not what I was expecting. Tower of London was a let down, so was the National Gallery.

50but17inside · 24/05/2019 16:54

Sutton Hoo.

LittleMissCwtch · 24/05/2019 16:54

Glastonbury really disappointed us, very unfriendly and unwelcoming we couldn't wait to leave! Such a shame as I was really looking forward to it, would like to do the Tor but don't think I want to go back!

DesparateDino · 24/05/2019 16:55

I have not travelled many places but Hollywood was a bit underwhelming.

Cherylshaw · 24/05/2019 16:56

Edinburgh castle, overpriced and shit

DirtyDennis · 24/05/2019 16:56

@Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername See I quite liked how ordinary the pyramids were. Like you, I'd expected something magnificent but them being very understated felt "right", like they were so magnificent that they didn't need to be magnificent. Sorry, I'm not making any sense.

I was pretty underwhelmed with Machu Pichu in Peru. It took fucking ages to get there, I had altitude sickness, it was cold and damp, and was, fundamentally, just a load of old stones on the ground. Yes, it looks really impressive from the sky but when you're there, not so much.

nothanksbyenow · 24/05/2019 16:56

Times Square. Just stress inducing!

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 16:57

Statue of Liberty. Loved New York in general but it looked so much smaller than I imagined. I thought she'd be the same height as the skyscrapers Grin

parkingpillocks · 24/05/2019 16:57

Statue of Liberty....much smaller than it looks in the films.
Shame about Lake Bled, my DS went and said it was one of the loveliest places he has been so we were planning to go!

MayFayner · 24/05/2019 16:57

Niagra Falls. It’s was very misty and dull I just wasn’t that bothered.

I loved Venice though (but €€€€).

KatnissMellark · 24/05/2019 16:57

Sistine chapel. Small and underwhelming.

parkingpillocks · 24/05/2019 16:58

Haha cheesenpickles we must've been typing that at the same time...great minds

ladylinda52 · 24/05/2019 16:58

Malta.

JuneFromBethesda · 24/05/2019 16:59

Gibraltar. A big dirty lump of rock.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 24/05/2019 17:00

@parkingpillocks maybe you'd love it and my expectations were too much. :)

I'd also expect the Statue of Liberty to be MASSIVE. It's always shown that big in films!

Stonehenge- trudging round some windswept rocks in the rain was depressing.

flissfloss65 · 24/05/2019 17:00

Sydney Opera House looks great from the water but close up was very disappointing. Lots of cheap looking white bathroom tiles.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/05/2019 17:02

Ayers rock to look at, it's just a big rock.
I did the climb which I know is frowned upon and that was great, but it's still v expensive and a long way to go for a rock.
The Olgas were better.
On the other hand, the Sydney Harbour bridge climb was amazing.
