What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Grey friars bobby in Edinburgh (but I was a petulant teenager at the time)

Felt like I had walked miles to see it so was completely underwhelmed

I'd probably feel different as an adult

HollyBollyBooBoo · 24/05/2019 17:03

Niagra Falls, hideously tacky, I had no idea.

Rome, dirty and covered in graffiti.

grincheux · 24/05/2019 17:04

The Sagrada Familia - what an overcomplicated mess.

ScorchioScorchio · 24/05/2019 17:04

San Francisco. Nothing wrong with it but just didn't like it as much as I expected too. Everyone raves about the food but we'd just come from Sydney which was waaaay better for eating out. I did, however, have a fab experience in Luxembourg City - didn't expect much but it was lovely.

JeantheHipster · 24/05/2019 17:05

Notre Dame. I've visited more interesting and beautiful churches 😬.

It probably didn't help that the queue didn't look too bad but it took over 1.5 hours. We were approached 4 different times by people trying to scam us then we got into an argument with a couple who attempted to push in front of us at the entrance. Basically, I can't really remember what it looked like inside because it was so bloody underwhelming

SallyWD · 24/05/2019 17:06

Hollywood is a dump

nrpmum · 24/05/2019 17:07

Pisa. The leaning tower is much smaller than I expected, on a positive note the ice cream was to die for.

Coveredincathair · 24/05/2019 17:07

Don’t know if this counts but the Mona Lisa, very small & protected in very thick glass.

EssexGurl · 24/05/2019 17:07

New York - all of it.

CarcerDun · 24/05/2019 17:07

The Sphinx is so small and meh, I was underwhelmed.

SunsetBunny · 24/05/2019 17:09

I saw the Mona Lisa in 2002 & don’t remember it being behind any glass ..must have changed.

TeenTimesTwo · 24/05/2019 17:09

Covered What I found weird with the Mona Lisa was the fact so many were standing with their back to it … taking selfies.

CottonSock · 24/05/2019 17:09

I was also going to say Niagara and rome. Also didn't enjoy the experience of seeing the last supper in Milan.

NotAgainKen · 24/05/2019 17:09

the Vatican. It made me really angry* for some reason, and normally I love a good cathedral.

  • not to the point of screaming in the Sistene Chapel
BaaBaaBaaMoo · 24/05/2019 17:11

Stonehenge was very underwhelming.

I quite liked Lake Bled!

mouldyhousemouldylife · 24/05/2019 17:13

It sounds like the film/tourism industry has caused us to have unrealistic expectations of just about everywhere, with lots of comments being about how small things are! Disappointing!

Is there anything that is truly massive?

Paris, just didn’t like it

Singapore, nice enough but not worth the journey

mouldyhousemouldylife · 24/05/2019 17:15

I agree about Paris. Shit weather and riots didn't help my view though!

mogloveseggs · 24/05/2019 17:16

Whitby abbey

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 17:16

Haha! Good cross post @parkingpillocks GrinGlad I'm not the only one. People think I'm bonkers when I say it.

AnyFucker · 24/05/2019 17:17

Many of the above

And the mermaid in Copenhagen

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 24/05/2019 17:18

Dirtydennis perfect sense 😂😂

mamakoukla · 24/05/2019 17:18

Stonehenge, because pictures of it made me think it would be taller. The reality - it is! But the expectation was it would be taller. Alright, not quite Spinal Tap 😁

jeanne16 · 24/05/2019 17:19

Buckingham Palace. I was expecting Cinderella’s castle (I was a child).

CarcerDun · 24/05/2019 17:20

@AnyFucker yes, the mermaid is pointless. There's an amazing fountain just round the corner from it that is worth the bother though.
