What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

The Stonehenge ones make me laugh as we live close by, and have never understood why people trek so far to see something that is actually quite uninspiring and boring.

serensiren · 24/05/2019 17:21

Taj Mahal.
Looks nice from the outside, completely bare and nothing on the inside.

winterinmadeira · 24/05/2019 17:21

The Sistine chapel - I was so shocked by some of it and how rubbish the painting was!

Readytogogogo · 24/05/2019 17:21

Florence was far too touristy....I'm aware of the hypocrisy given that I was a tourist.

qj17 · 24/05/2019 17:21

Statue of Liberty and the Rockefeller Christmas tree during the day... don't let your first vision of it be in the day with no lights on lol.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2019 17:21

New York (really, really dirty) and Japan (wet and a bit boring). DH says we need to go back to see if it gets better. Why?

Loved Niagra Falls and Venice though.

Needadoughnut · 24/05/2019 17:22

The pyramids in Egypt... But I had seen the Mexican ones before.much cleaner and better organised

confussedmisfit · 24/05/2019 17:22

Grand canyon.

Done a fly over in a charter plane. And you know what?
It's just a big chasm in the earth. Nothing spectacular.

Hoover dam was fantastic though.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/05/2019 17:23

niagra, sydney harbour, very underwhelming. Loved the pyramids.

Zebedee88 · 24/05/2019 17:23

Paris. Not a city of love...full of thieves and gangs who try and scam you out of money.

Igotmylipstickon · 24/05/2019 17:23

The Mermaid in Copenhagen. She's just a little statue on a rock. Was very underwhelmed.

Yapyapnonstop · 24/05/2019 17:24

Los Angeles especially the walk of fame. What a tacky dump.

RestingBitchFaced · 24/05/2019 17:24

Giants causeway - full of tourists, couldn't even take a decent photo, and basically just a pile of rocks

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2019 17:25

Agree about Hollywood. What a dump. Especially the area around the Chinese Theatre. Didn't hang about.

Also agree about Stonehenge-boring and not worth the bother.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2019 17:26

Loved the Grand Canyon - but we flew into it by helicopter (three times) and stayed on the rim. But I agree about the Hoover Dam - amazing!

Jaxhog · 24/05/2019 17:26

Yes, LA and Hollywood were a big disapppointment.

ginswinger · 24/05/2019 17:27

@mouldyhousemouldylife I love Lake Bled! Did you go on to Lake Bohinj to the west? It's evening more stunning.

I'm not a fan of Lake Baikal, it's underwhelming. Brussels is also a bit dull. I tried it again to see if it got better ten years later. It hadn't. No offence to the Belgians. Luxembourg is peculiar.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 24/05/2019 17:28

Notre Dame was much smaller than I expected.

The Mona Lisa was small and dark in a room crowded with people but we walked down a long, light gallery of equally old, brighter paintings to get to it.

The Venus de Milo is displayed with several other sculptures with bits missing and it made her feel less special somehow.

However, Paris generally I love because it just looks and feels so French. Maybe our expectations are too high because we can visit everywhere online.

louderthan · 24/05/2019 17:28

The Great Wall of China

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/05/2019 17:28

St Kevin's Stump.

KittyB52 · 24/05/2019 17:29

Another vote for Paris - overpriced and underwhelming.

Bruges was OK but nothing great - Ghent was much better.

I like the weirdness of Luxembourg. Grin

origamiunicorn · 24/05/2019 17:30

The pyramids were not what I was expecting. In what way Backwoodsgirl I'm genuinely interested Smile

MrsOaf · 24/05/2019 17:33

Stonehenge (not a patch on skara brae or Maishowe in Orkney)

Trevi fountain - meh

Paris, not anything like as glam as I expected

Muddlingalongalone · 24/05/2019 17:33

Bondi beach

mouldyhousemouldylife · 24/05/2019 17:34

@ginswinger no I didn't see that one actually!

I really liked Brussels, found it very quaint and pretty. I would have expected Luxembourg to be completely dull, maybe I'll add it to my list!
