What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Love South Africa but find the Garden Route massively overrated. Loads of driving, some beautiful views and a general sense of 'could have spent a week doing more interesting stuff'.

mrselizabethdarcy · 24/05/2019 17:36

Cinderella castle at magic Kingdom in Disney. Was told it was magical.....was just meh

iklboo · 24/05/2019 17:38

I think with places like Stonehenge, Sphinx, Great Wall, pyramids etc you've got to think about the feat of engineering and craftsmanship that went into them at the time that they were built. It puts it into a bit more perspective.

The best part of doing the Statue of Liberty tour was the gift shop. No seriously, the gift shop is really good, lol.

I actually liked the Vatican. Not the Sistine Chapel which is dingy and small and definitely did not overcome me with racking sobs. But the rest of it was awesome. Loads of bits to it to see, and sitting on the actual roof of the Basilica eating a picnic lunch was really cool. There's grafitti scratched into the walls which is hundreds of years old. "Bob was here on his Grand Tour 1759" sort of thing. I love that shit.

Also San Francisco, other than the bridge its quite disappointing. Its also a dump and some of the homeless people are quite aggressive and shout directly at you.

I agree. I mean how they got those stones there from Wales at the time is mind boggling.

We had a private showing of Michaelangelo's David while in Florence with some people from DH's work. It was a perfectly nice statue, don't get me wrong. But one woman cried with awe at the sight, and at dinner everyone was all gush gush about it - but I was a bit 'meh'. It didn't move me like, say, a piece of poetry or literature or music could.

Seen one tiny stone willy, seen them all.

I get that, I just feel I could do that watching a documentary about them or reading about it. Not going to the trouble of visiting.

MotherOfTheNoise · 24/05/2019 17:51

The Eiffel Tower. Just totally didn't get the point of it 🤷🏻‍♀️

duckling84 · 24/05/2019 17:51

Grand Canyon. Was expecting to be blown away but it was all a bit meh. Maybe more interesting if you did a helicopter ride instead of just standing on the top edge. Just a bunch of rocks.
Hollywood was a bit ordinary.

thereasonisyou · 24/05/2019 17:54

@Muddling- was going to say exactly the same: I thought Bondi beach itself was small, busy and surrounded by tacky shops. Far nicer beaches in the UK!!

lurkingfromhome · 24/05/2019 17:54

Brussels - one fairly nice main square and the rest is a total meh-fest. And that pissing boy statue thing - really, WHAT is the point?

Very underwhelmed by Berlin also but I appreciate I'm in a minority of one here as everyone else seems to adore the place. All the main tourist attractions I found entirely un-awe inspiring.

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2019 17:57

I went to Disneyland CA. It was ok, a theme park. It was not magical or wonderful or anything. Didn't get any photos of myself with people dressed in costumes. Grin

Never felt the need to return to Disney anywhere else.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 24/05/2019 17:58

Niagara Falls. The town was so tacky and nasty, like a downmarket British seaside resort. The Falls didn't look all that dramatic from above either.

KnittingForMittens · 24/05/2019 18:01

Lloret de Mar in Spain. Way too loud for my liking!

GabsAlot · 24/05/2019 18:02

Paris in general smelt of piss and was dirty

cheesenpickles · 24/05/2019 18:02

@Zebedee88 I saw a tramp pull his trousers down and shit on a pavement in Paris. Didn't really ingratiate my not so keen on France husband to Paris. Blush

isabellerossignol · 24/05/2019 18:03

and basically just a pile of rocks

There's no basically about it, it is just a pile of rocks. But they're funny shaped rocks, that's what makes them unique. Smile

I love the Giants Causeway but it is crazily busy. I was there on a winter day last year when there were pools of ice frozen on top of the rocks and it was beautiful, but it was still very busy, even when the temperature was below zero.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/05/2019 18:04

But you know on the flip side we’ve been driving in Scotland in the arse end of nowhere and spotted many a brown plaque, only to find an amazing ancient burial mound or carved standing stones and not a soul in sight.

glitterbiscuits · 24/05/2019 18:05

The Eden Project. I've been twice, it hadn't improved.

savingmysanity · 24/05/2019 18:06

The blue lagoon in Iceland - the water isnt even really blue, its really just a very expensive swimming pool (the bar is a bonus htough....)

isabellerossignol · 24/05/2019 18:09

I've never really been underwhelmed by anywhere, but I'm a natural cynic so I go to most places with the mindset that if I don't expect too much I might be pleasantly surprised. The Little Mermaid was tiny but I was still glad I saw it just because it's so well known.

I suppose the exception might be that I have never seen a coastline or visited a beach and found it as beautiful as the ones near where I live. But that's not to say they've been disappointing as such, just that for that particular thing the ones at home are outstanding so it would take a lot to improve on them.

IndigoSpritz · 24/05/2019 18:14

The Normandy (landings) beaches; Utah, Omaha and so on. I was 11 or 12 when I went there and to me, they were just beaches. Their historical significance was, at the time, lost on me.

Whoops75 · 24/05/2019 18:14

Venice was very packed and very smelly in July.

LittleAndOften · 24/05/2019 18:14

Windsor Castle. Really expensive, every inch of plaster was gilded so it looked more Las Vegas hotel than ye olde Englande. Lots of dusty portraits, suits of armour and hundreds of pairs of vases. I can imagine her maj raises a wry eyebrow every time she is given another set. "oooh Philip look MORE vases!" Hmm

I've been to much more interesting (and cheaper!) stately homes. In fact the only things worth looking at were the doll's houses.
