What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

The Eden project - the domes were smaller than I expected. As we were leaving, we overheard someone saying they had spent six hours there. How? Even with eating and watching a show we didn’t spend that long there.

@MrsMoastyToasty oh yes Gibraltar is awful. Tiny, overcrowded and like a chavvy mini British Town centre in the sunshine. Basically just a glorified booze n fags stop off for sailors and cruise passengers.

The barbary apes were horrid, snatching food and damaging cars. Like scavenging pigeons with arms!

"I've seen the world and most of it's grim" .....Karl Pilkington.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 24/05/2019 19:01

To those saying New York - there are so many beautiful buildings, parks, museums, art galleries, fantastic restaurants, friendly interesting people - each district has it's own unique ambience - I would go every year if I could afford it 😅

SnowWhite33 · 24/05/2019 19:01

Walk of Fame, Hollywood, Rodeo drive and LA in general. Do not get the hype, you have to drive everywhere, constantly on the highway and the buildings are either shabby looking and low or tacky
Confused

Knittedfairies · 24/05/2019 19:03

Niagara Falls was disappointing, and so was Plymouth Rock (which was so unimpressive I'd forgotten all about it until someone mentioned it upthread.). Times Square isn't ...square. The White House wasn't what I expected either. You don't have to go far to be underwhelmed either; Sherwood Forest isn't anything like the forest in 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' starring Richard Greene. (And now I've got 'Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen' as an ear worm...)

Warmhandscoldheart · 24/05/2019 19:03

@lurkingfromhome I agree Brussels was a real disappointment. Pissing Boy Statue not worth the time it took to find it.

bonbonours · 24/05/2019 19:06

Paris... I lived in the suburbs for a couple of months at the age of 19 and spent my weekends dutifully going through all the stuff in my guidebook but it was all a bit meh. Maybe it was the lack of company though. I was like 'Hey, there's the Eiffel Tower again' yawn.
Maybe I need to go back, maybe I'd love it. Mind you lots of places people rave about seem to be mostly about eating/drinking out but I mostly feel annoyed at how expensive it is eating and drinking out compared to buying the same thing in a supermarket....

jackparlabane · 24/05/2019 19:08

New York disapointed me the first time - midtown is soulless, Central Park is more tstnac than grass you can go on - but I've found the good bits since.

We saw Pisa in under 1 hour on our way from Florence back to the airport, which was about right. There's a tower. It leans. Another marble church. And even more tacky plastic religious shit on sale than in the rest of Italy. (loved Florence, though)

TillyTheTiger · 24/05/2019 19:08

The Golden Gate Bridge. I loved San Francisco (unlike many PP it seems) but three times I went to look at the bridge and didn't see it once - it was shrouded in fog the entire time!

OliviaBenson · 24/05/2019 19:09

Based on a thread here the Sistine chapel was very underwhelming- I expected to be overcome with emotion and my DH to walk off in disgust....

GooodMythicalMorning · 24/05/2019 19:10

London. I think I thought it would be posher and glitzy.

NaturalBornWoman · 24/05/2019 19:10

Santorini
It's absolutely hell on Earth when the cruise ships arrive

Totally agree. Mind you so are most places, which is why I'd never go on a cruise because I'd see everywhere at its worst. Santorini was disappointing in general though, but I'd been wanting to go for ages.

I was also a bit disappointed with Dubrovnik, but we had poor weather so maybe that didn't help.

LittleAndOften · 24/05/2019 19:12

I'm sure lots of people love Barcelona but we found it pretty grim. Awful food in every place we tried (even a recommendation from the hotel!), being pestered every evening by hawkers selling 1 beer can at a time. Parc Guell was just full of refugees/homeless selling sunglasses and friendship bands. I mean everywhere, it was really shocking. It was the same on the beaches, being approached constantly by hawkers, you couldn't escape it. Such a shame.

StateofIndependance · 24/05/2019 19:13

Versailles. Hours of queue and ridiculously busy. Impossible to see anything. A miserable waste of a day.

Crunchymum · 24/05/2019 19:14

I do sometimes wonder if people read the threads title as "What amazing place on Earth do you like to sneer about?" Grin

Lilybeth91 · 24/05/2019 19:18

The Sistine chapel. It certainly didn’t affect me in the way it affected an infamous MN poster Grin

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2019 19:18

I loved San Francisco. Lucky with the weather because the Golden Gate Bridge looked amazing and Alcatraz was well worth the visit. Riding the trams was great fun too.

Reports from people that have gone recently- there are loads of beggars and the place is looking a bit scruffy. Sad

Tweedledumanddumber · 24/05/2019 19:19

I saw the Mona Lisa in 2002 & don’t remember it being behind any glass ..must have changed.

I also went in 2002 and dont remember the glass... but i did feel quite underwhelmed by it!!

TSSDNCOP · 24/05/2019 19:19

Jerusalem and Bethlehem. It was like they were hosting A Festival of Litter.

madeyemoodysmum · 24/05/2019 19:21

Gretna green. What a commercial dump

SpeckledyHen · 24/05/2019 19:23

Hollywood - a total sh1thole .

NameChangeNugget · 24/05/2019 19:24

I would love to know what people consider as great places, so I can judge them Grin

I agree with Hollywood, Edinburgh & Pisa but, disagree with Malta, Sydney, Versailles & Rome

rockingthelook · 24/05/2019 19:27

Pamukkale in Turkey, the photos show lovely bright blue water filled white edged pools cascading down the hillside, people bathing in them, in reality slippy rocks and puddles of murky water in with clay at the bottom, so disappointing

CherryPavlova · 24/05/2019 19:28

The Mona Lisa, the Lorelei both disappointing but that’s not a huge deal because Paris and Copenhagen are lovely cities.
I always find Bath underwhelming but that might be more to do with my mother in law living there.
Barcelona. I much prefer Valencia.
