Dress with leggings. Is this still or thing or fashion faux pas?

Just wondered. I feel slightly too cold to go out in a dress so thought the leggings might warm me up but, if it's out of fashion, I don't want to look silly.

I wear dresses and leggings. I don't think its fashionable but I dont think it looks so silly that people will notice.

Lost5stone · 22/05/2019 10:01

People don't really care what others wear, but I would wear tights personally, think it looks much better. I feel very frumpy in leggings and a dress

Lilac3 · 22/05/2019 10:04

It's what I wore during my pregnancies, that's the only reason I wouldn't now.

It looks 'fine', but I wouldn't call it fashionable

I never liked the look, I think it looks much bulkier and heavier somehow, than tights. Thick black leggings really don't actually go with most outfits.

But given I've never liked it, I'm probably not best placed to advise. Plenty of people do seem to like it.

vampirethriller · 22/05/2019 11:59

It's more or less all I wear, unless it's warm enough for bare legs. Leggings last a lot longer than tights.

alligatorsmile · 22/05/2019 12:31

I think it looks nice. Also, it's quite a 90s thing to do, like wearing a little white t-shirt under a strappy dress, that is now incredibly on trend AND has the benefit of being comfy and suits everyone!

In the summer really? Just wear trousers if you’re cold or opaque tights with your dresses.

Nottobesoldseparately · 22/05/2019 14:34

Well I'm wearing a short denim skirt today with leggings underneath.

I don't want to wear tights as I like wearing flip flops. And I'm not going bare legged as I just don't like to, ever.
My legs are ok to, neither slim nor fat, just ok.

I also wear leggings with dresses and tunics, but mainly tunics.

Wear what makes you happy Smile

JonestheMail · 22/05/2019 14:35

I can't bear tights so cotton leggings with dresses are my outfit of choice, including at work. Seems fine to me.

Same. I feel super uncomfortable in jeans and can never get the lengths of jeans or trousers to fit me. I hate tights they make me feel hot a they fall down or rumple. Leggings don't add bulk and cover my fat hideous legs. Win win.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 22/05/2019 15:27

Same. I’ve decided life’s FAR too short to spend being bothered about what random people think about the clothes I’m wearing.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 22/05/2019 15:28

Plus there are women everywhere I go wearing leggings with a dress so it’s hardly uncommon.

MumUndone · 22/05/2019 15:31

Honestly, it is a fashion faux pas. I don't really see anyone in leggings anymore, unless they're going to the gym (or fat, sorry).

MyNameIsCharlesII · 22/05/2019 15:35

@MumUndone really? The shops are jam packed with leggings so someone’s buying them Hmm

MyNameIsCharlesII · 22/05/2019 15:36

And obviously being fat is a fashion faux pas in itself I suppose

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 22/05/2019 16:00

I'm fat, I wear leggings. Deal with it.

Knewyouwerewaiting · 22/05/2019 16:03

There was a recent thread about this and most people said no it’s not a good look.

I do wear leggings but not with a dress and haven’t for years.

Teddybear45 · 22/05/2019 16:04

Stylish, model like, south asian and middle eastern women often wear leggings with their dresses too. Just their leggings aren’t black.

Teddybear45 · 22/05/2019 16:05

But generally this isn’t a good look in the UK as you can’t get light summer wear leggings here

Teddybear45 · 22/05/2019 16:06

Or you can but they look shit

IHaveBrilloHair · 22/05/2019 16:07

I'd say it's not fashionable, but lots of everyday comfy clothes aren't.
I wouldn't wear it on a night out, but for mooching around during the day, fine.
My crap outfit of choice is rolled up jeans and a hoody, with scraped back hair obvs!Grin

SilentSister · 22/05/2019 16:09

Interesting - So really, what's the difference between a good thick expensive pair of leggings, and skinny jeans. Often you can't tell the difference. If you are wearing them with a tunic, or a long cotton or silk shirt, I think they look elegant. I am a product of the 80's though, so maybe I am just a throwback.

SinkGirl · 22/05/2019 16:10

I can’t wear short (knee length or above) dresses without leggings now - wrangling toddlers and dresses are a bad combo. Don’t really care if it’s faux pas or not, who am I trying to impress?

I also bought some boob tube type tops to go under halter neck/low cut / backless things this summer so I’m not flashing people in the park.

ASOS are selling short leggings (basically the cycling shorts I used to wear in the 80s) which will be great for under dresses!
