Dress with leggings. Is this still or thing or fashion faux pas?

Just wondered. I feel slightly too cold to go out in a dress so thought the leggings might warm me up but, if it's out of fashion, I don't want to look silly.

Why not black tights?

Widowodiw · 22/05/2019 18:52

I wouldn’t wear leggings under a dress anymore. I’m late 30s this was a thing in my late 20s so wouldn’t do it now. But then again I now don’t wear the type of dresses that you would put leggings under just pencil dresses these days.

Ohyesiam · 22/05/2019 18:57

Today I am wearing a gorgeous dress from Hush, and done copped grey marl leggings. Several people have told me I look good.

This is what I wear to work every single day. Couldn’t give a shiny shite about fashion faux pas.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/05/2019 19:04

It is super practical BUT the look has been hijacked by fat people to stop their thighs rubbing together uncomfortably
Yup, we stole all the leggings. Now anyone who isn't fat can't wear them because everyone knows leggings make you fat and fat people always look like shit. We leave them in size 8 in the shop just to taunt you. They're ours.

S0CKS · 22/05/2019 19:13

I wear it most days!

Turpy · 22/05/2019 19:16

In think it looks nice. I don't wear it myself though as I prefer either bare legs or jeans. I almost never wear tights - they are way too uncomfortable.

If I wanted to wear them I would. I don't care if some people think they aren't fashionable.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 22/05/2019 19:24

Shock horror - I have leggings that rightfully belong to a slender person, and have the TEMERITY to wear them with a dress, in public while being fat. So not just committing the terrible crime of not being on trend, but also appropriating thin person attire. Hmm

Believe me, it looks far better for me to wear a dress with leggings than for me to adopt a more athleisure style.

They’re just clothes after all, and they fit and they’re comfy and I like the look. As clearly do many others. A big “up yours!” to the goady fuckers out there.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 22/05/2019 19:25

I think that most people look best in clothes that make them feel good. So if you like them, wear them. Nobody else cares (or if they do then this is a handy marker for them being twerps anyway!).

AS an aside, I wonder if it is fatness that causes thighs to rub- I am definitely on the heftier side, but I've never had it and my thighs tend to be naked all year round. I can't wear tights because they stop me from crossing my toes and that drives me mad, so if I needed to cover my legs then I'd wear leggings. My dresses are all maxi length though, so I doubt anyone can tell either way.

StarlightLady · 22/05/2019 19:32

It’s not a something l like or would wear, but each to their own style.

SinkGirl · 22/05/2019 20:03

My thighs rubbed together when I was a size 8 - I’ve just never had a gap between my thighs even when skinny 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, I am sure the world would rather I wore leggings under my dresses than flashed them when bending over (I don’t even wax my bikini line so I’m pretty sure anyone I flashed would die of absolute horror)

peridito · 22/05/2019 20:16

Could someone who is 5' 2" and a size 16 wear cropped leggings and a dress ?

( asking for a friend ,obviously )

joystir59 · 22/05/2019 20:23

I'm slim and love this look, wouldn't wear leggings and a dress when I was fat

sideorderofchips · 22/05/2019 20:23

I wear dresses and leggings

Ronsters · 22/05/2019 20:37

I think it looks ok, though it's not something I wear myself. I tried it recently as I wanted to wear sandals but felt the dress I wanted to wear was a bit short for bare legs (for my legs anyway). I came to the conclusion it wasn't for me, I was sweltered all day. I'm sticking to bare legs in warmer weather.

I did wonder if footless tights could be better, less heavy/warm than leggings.

ChillaxingInMyKimono · 22/05/2019 20:40

I don't wear skirts above the knee as I hate the shape of my legs - I'm tall and slim, but my legs are pure tree trunk.

Encasing my tree trunks in leggings doesn't alter anything. It just makes them a different colour.

As such I just don't wear shorter skirts at all.

SinkGirl · 22/05/2019 20:46

Could someone who is 5' 2" and a size 16 wear cropped leggings and a dress

I’m your height and a 14, I do it - don’t care if I shouldn’t!

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 22/05/2019 20:55

Yes you can, I’m 4’11 and a 16. :) And I do!

TeamDixon · 22/05/2019 20:59

I prefer footless tights to leggings with a dress but the overall look is the same.
Too cold for bare legs, too hot for boots so footless tights and sandals or flip flops.

Tigger001 · 22/05/2019 21:14

Sorry, but i was never really aware it was "a thing" and if it was, it really should not have been. It is not a great look on anyone IMO, tights always look better (again Only IMO)

violeticecream · 22/05/2019 21:16

I always wear leggings under dresses. I like the look. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

RuthW · 22/05/2019 21:22

I wear dresses and leggings this tome of year when I'm not at work. I'm 50 and I don't care if it's fashionable or not.

peridito · 22/05/2019 21:33

Thank you sinkgirl and kalink my friend Wink might give it a go !

Marmablade · 22/05/2019 21:34

Everyone wears dresses and leggings round my way!

SinkGirl · 22/05/2019 21:34

How do you know it’s not a great look if you didn’t know it was a “thing”?

I don’t believe you, by the way. I see women dressed like this on a daily basis.

I wouldn’t wear tights because they’re more see through and the purpose of the leggings is so that no one sees my backside.

I am only 5’2” and yet even knee length dresses show my bum when I bend over - I don’t know why this is, but it is. I don’t know how tall women aren’t arrested daily on indecency charges. I used to just be careful but when you’re wrangling twins there’s no time to think about it.

In the summer I try to wear maxi dresses so it’s not an issue. I just got a maxi length loose jumpsuit for the summer, it’s probably not very stylish either but it’s going to be so handy and cool when it’s hot!
