Dress with leggings. Is this still or thing or fashion faux pas?

Just wondered. I feel slightly too cold to go out in a dress so thought the leggings might warm me up but, if it's out of fashion, I don't want to look silly.

I love them! Leggings to match whatever dress/tunic you are wearing and then you can wear any type of footwear you like! I wear Capri length when it's warm, long when it's not. I'm also of the view that people look & feel more elegant when they are comfortable 😉

PorpentinaScamander · 22/05/2019 16:11

I'm fat so cant wear dresses without something underneath to stop the rubbing.

Mind you my thighs rubbed when I was a size 10 Hmm

Buttons4me · 22/05/2019 16:11

I hate wearing tights they make me itch and flare up my eczema so have to wear leggings too.

Just coming into say my usual answer to this - coloured leggings! I only wear black with black. It’s not warm enough for bare legs yet and with leggings if it gets hot you can whip them off.

But then I also have some iridescent blue ones I wear with a blue dress ;-) (RIP American Apparel)

slippermaiden · 22/05/2019 16:17

It looks good if the dress is above the knee, not so good if it's longer. I wear leggings, dresses or skirts and flip flops during the summer. My legs are super white and will stay that way no matter how much sun I show them! Leggings are made of cotton, tights are nylon.... they are not in the same category.

feelingverylazytoday · 22/05/2019 16:23

They're still in fashion where I live, saw quite a few women wearing dresses over leggings today. To be honest, I don't think leggings will ever go away now, people just like wearing them.

LolaSmiles · 22/05/2019 16:23

It depends on dress length. Mini dress or tunic length or long top length then I think it looks lovely.

Knee length dresses with leggings isn't a good look in my opinion. Frumpy is the wrong word (as it sounds mean), but it's the sort of outfit I can imagine ageing whoever is wearing it.

I'm with other posters on loving leggings though. They're great.

outsho · 22/05/2019 16:27

Wore it during pregnancies because tights never seemed to fit right but I wouldn’t do it otherwise.

Aprillygirl · 22/05/2019 16:44

I'm on the fence. It is super practical BUT the look has been hijacked by fat people to stop their thighs rubbing together uncomfortably.

So you are saying you wouldn't wear it incase you were put in the same bracket as a fat person?
I think leggings look nice with a shortish dress OP, and the great thing is you can always whip them off and stick them in your bag if you start to feel hot.

DontCallMeShitley · 22/05/2019 16:46

It's not something I would wear but can look good on some people (not me though).

Asda do a 2 pack of black leggings which are thinner and OK to wear with something covering the bum.

Far better than the 'fashion' for wearing jeans with a dress.

gotmychocolateimgood · 22/05/2019 16:47

I wear cropped leggings from white stuff with a short dress quite often. It suits me and is mega comfy. The end

BiscuitDrama · 22/05/2019 16:47

I’d wear tights these days I think. Or skinny jeans if it’s a shorter dress.
Could you wear a T-shirt underneath for extra warmth? Or a cardigan.

DorisDay88 · 22/05/2019 17:04

I wear footless tights - slimmer than leggings but you can still wear flats

Thesearmsofmine · 22/05/2019 17:11

I live in leggings and dresses most of the time. They are comfortable and practical. I see plenty of others wearing them too. It’s not cutting edge fashion but it’s fine.

BarkandCheese · 22/05/2019 17:21

I think it’s fine, but black leggings can look a bit harsh with a lot of dresses, and can make legs look more chunky. I prefer grey or navy with dresses.

PCohle · 22/05/2019 17:35

I don't think it's very fashionable anymore. But if it's what you like then who gives a damn.

I think the fashionable way to wear leggings now is in more of an "athleisure" way, rather than under dresses.

EngagedAgain · 22/05/2019 17:38

I have recently converted to leggings with a very long top or above knee dress, as I can't stand tights. Not worn tights for years. They never feel comfortable, plus feel can't breathe in them. Also, although it was probably because I weren't wearing underwear (to get a smooth line under a dress) at a 'do', I became very aware I started to sweat and smell 😚 😱 so, it's kind of put me off completely.

CodenameVillanelle · 22/05/2019 17:42

the look has been hijacked by fat people

Fucking hijacked? Are you serious?

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 22/05/2019 17:48

Fat people are not allowed anything comfortable, that might be fashionable or that they might enjoy. How dare they hijack the style of skinny people? They have no shame and ruin looks woth their fat, rubbing thigh...obviously.

SinkGirl · 22/05/2019 17:57

So you are saying you wouldn't wear it incase you were put in the same bracket as a fat person?

Indeed, someone might mistake your thin legs for fat legs if they’re wrapped in the same type of skin tight fabric. The horror, the horror.

CakeNinja · 22/05/2019 17:58

I wear leggings with shorter dresses for work sometimes.
I’m not fashionable but I look tidy and presentable!

TheMonaOgg · 22/05/2019 18:00

I do it as I get really fed up with tights falling down and find cotton leggings much more comfy. They're also much more practical for crawling around soft play etc with a three year old.

Cloudyyy · 22/05/2019 18:04

Horrible!

Terramirabilis · 22/05/2019 18:06

I think it's dated. But, I don't think it was ever a super cool look, more of a practical one. It's not something I'd wear (I live somewhere with hot summers and just the thought of leggings under a dress with our weather makes me start sweating.) If I were going to though, I'd see it as a strictly playing-with-the-kids at the park look, not general everyday.

Jux · 22/05/2019 18:43

I can't get tights on, far too much wrangling and pulling and stretching! I'm disabled though so am weak and not v mobile. I wear leggings or trousers with anything, tunics, dresses, blah..... anything! I had to stop worrying what people thought of my look when we became very poor.
