I asked my brother-in-law (DW's sister's partner), as my wife had cut off contact with her father, so he was the only adult male in her family.

I was a bit surprised, but DW wanted me to, and her mother expected it.

It was only a formality anyway.

Yes. Not because he had to, he wanted to. He knew the answer would be yes so it was a formality. My dad told him I would say yes hahaha.
