Just reading the Diana thread

Who is your celebrity that you will mourn..

Mine is Meat Loaf, Paul Weller and Bob Dylan

I will genuinely cry when they die.

I know this will be unpopular but it's Tom Jones for me. I can't even really articulate why but I just know I will be gutted when he dies.

redeyetonowheregood · 15/04/2019 00:02

I was very sad when George Michael, prince and Whitney Houston died. All of them so talented, plagued by drug problems, all died alone.

In the future. Bruce springsteen, Billy Joel and sting. All provided the soundtrack to my youth and I still really like them. Dave gahan and Robert Smith too.

evilharpy · 15/04/2019 00:09

I was devastated as a teenager when River Phoenix died.

I hate several friends in their 40s who are still mourning Kurt Cobain.

augustusglupe · 15/04/2019 00:09

Prince..I cried for 2 weeks solid....And I’m no light weight in the grief department, having lost my mum, dad and brother...I still can’t believe it tbh.
I was sad about Lemmy, Bowie, Victoria Wood and Rik Mayall... but nothing like Prince.
From Christmas 2015 to 2016, we lost so many didn’t we?!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/04/2019 00:10

I was upset when George Michael died it did not sink in for quite some time, it just seemed impossible to believe. I was sad when Prince died as well and really shocked I hated the thought that Prince died alone in a lift and George alone in bed, they had so much talent, money and adoring fans but died by themselves, very sad. Future celeb deaths that will probably hit me will be when the cast of Friends begin to die, it’s my go to happy place if I’m feeling blue, nothing really bad can happen in Friends world and once they go it will really highlight my mortality more as I’m a similar age, Joey is not allowed to die, ever!

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 15/04/2019 00:11

David Jason
David Attenborough
The Queen (& Prince Philip)

putastrawunderbaby · 15/04/2019 00:13

Dick van Dyke. It can't happen. Ever.

augustusglupe · 15/04/2019 00:22

Forgot to say in future...I’ll be sad when Joan Collins dies and the Queen of course....and Dave Gahan and James Hetfield...a bit random after the Queen but wth... Grin

MsChicken · 15/04/2019 00:29

David Bowie and George Michael was enough.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/04/2019 00:34

I think I'll very sad about Julie Andrews. I was surprisingly upset about Debbie Reynolds (although that was partly the circumstances).

Angela Lansbury and Doris Day as well — the links back to the golden age of musicals.

Twolipstulips · 15/04/2019 00:36

I suppose i am image what it will be like without them

Madmarchpear · 15/04/2019 00:43

Bruce Springsteen. Has been a big player in our family lore.
Bob Mortimer. Such an authentic and gentle man who makes me roar.

NuffSaidSam · 15/04/2019 00:49

I think for me it will be Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French.

I was really sad about Victoria Wood too.

The Queen going will be really weird.

I was also really embarrassingly upset when Leon from Gogglebox died. I think because it was so close to Christmas and they seemed such a nice family!

GlitterPixie · 15/04/2019 00:51

David Attenborough and Betty White

GlitterPixie · 15/04/2019 00:52

Angela Lansbury

MorningsEleven · 15/04/2019 00:53

Freddie. Pure legend gone before his time.

PissOffPeppa · 15/04/2019 01:30

Mine was Alan Rickman. I was out when I heard about his death and cried all the way home Blush

There’s a lot of academic research on why people grieve for celebrities. It’s very interesting- all about our perceived relationships with them. It winds me up when people get all snobby about it and say you can’t mourn someone you didn’t know. There are lots of legitimate sociological and psychological reasons behind it and it’s very real for those who feel it.

Thisweekisgoingtobecrazy · 15/04/2019 01:43

redeyetonowheregood - yes to Whitney Houston and George Michael. I don't tend to feel much attachment to celebrities (no criticism of those who do, it's just not how I'm wired) but my mother used to play their music a lot when I was a little girl. It felt strange to realise that all those years had slipped away from me and I was singing Whitney Houston (very badly!) to my own little girl, and WH was dead in such depressing circumstances.

Dowser · 15/04/2019 02:44

I still don’t think I’m properly over Diana dying
It was such s weird time
I think it was because it was my generation
I’m not much younger than Charles and there was such a spotlight on the young royals ... Charles, Anne, Andrew then Diana and fergie it almost felt like you knew them
Then when she died so tragically... the whole fairytale came tumbling down
For me it was utter disbelief
I was out of the country when she died
In France actually
So I’d seen all the pics of her frolicking along the French Riviera because we were there too

It also links into my mum who is no longer here
I’d rang home and mum told me about it and of course it was a huge shock
We went out in Cannes for the night but everything just felt flat
Then we missed the funeral as we were driving up France for the ferry
It brought it home driving up the motorway on the uk when we saw all the flowers at the side of the road

No one has affected me like that
I didn’t cry
I haven’t cried for aNy celeb
But Diana... yes it did affect me. I would’ve been a few years older than her and my children a bit older than hers
It was also the first major royal death

Giggorata · 15/04/2019 02:56

I have quite a few...
John Lennon, the first Beatle to go...
Jimi Hendrix
Leonard Cohen
Douglas Adams
Terry Pratchett
Iain Banks
Alan Rickman
Stephen Hawkins
Victoria Wood
Linda Smith
I will be devastated when Bob Dylan, Germaine Greer, Michael Palin and David Attenborough go...

Giggorata · 15/04/2019 02:56

And I forgot John Peel...

HeronLanyon · 15/04/2019 03:08

Was very very upset when Ella Fitzgerald died. (90s). Léonard Cohen - saw many times over the decades and his death was tough.

Know I will find these tough when they go
David Attenborough.
Liza Minnelli

The queen (not a royalist but I know I will be shocked when she dies)

Good wishes and good health to everyone

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 15/04/2019 03:46

The Queen for sure. And also Billy Connelly, and David Jason, because DH was a huge fan and it will probably make me think of sad times with DH, and not getting to see Billy Connelly live with him like we had planned.

bakedbeanzontoast · 15/04/2019 03:47

madeyemoodysmum · 15/04/2019 03:51
