The best hotel you've ever stayed in (or "your favourite")

I'm not really asking about the most fancy/expensive/etc, but rather the hotel that you've most enjoyed staying in or that was most beautiful or well located or whatever made is the best to you. Can be in the UK or abroad (or a few!)

Talking about honeymoons with DP and it doesn't look like we're going to have the time immediately after the wedding to go away due to work and study, so we're thinking about making a list of places we want to stay/go and aim to do all of them in the first 5-10 years of marriage (depending on how expensive they are and how many we choose). I know the likelihood of us doing it is probably quite slim but it's good to dream.

We're fairly well travelled, but have only ever really travelled on the cheap or in quite generic AIs, so interesting/luxurious/fun hotels are key over "going somewhere new".

Really hoping to get some responses and spend the rest of the night googling!

Gleneagles (Auchterarder) and Kinnettles (St Andrews). Both lovely hotels with good restaurants and just a fantastic experience. Gleneagles has more facilities but is more expensive. I’d go back to either again in a heartbeat

Langham place, Hong Kong
Excellence playa mujeres Cancun

Bohemond · 11/04/2019 22:40

Not the best hotel I have ever stayed in but we had a fantastic weekend at The Ned in London. We moved out to the sticks 12 years ago and loved being back in the city in a cool, buzzy environment. We love The Scarlet in Cornwall as well.

Without a doubt the Castello Boutique Resort and Spa in Sissi, Crete

We went when DD was 13 (I believe it is adult only now). The welcome and service was excellent, the food sensationally good, the rooms were spacious and comfortable, the grounds were spacious with plenty of sunbeds. Basically it ticked all the right boxes for us.

Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, CA. We stayed in a stand-alone mini villa perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Shower opened up to that vue. Mini Bar was complementary (should be for the price you pay). Amazing food, hiking trails, and no mobile service or tv coverage. Truly relaxing.

Gidleigh Park in Devon, just lovely,

Rudding Park is gorgeous

One of the apartments in 'the village' at Portmerion. It was off peak so a bit quieter than summer time but the whole thing felt magical (and mildly silly).

ShesABelter · 11/04/2019 22:51

Auchrannie in Arran is my favourite.

Linwin · 11/04/2019 22:52

This place was more of a B&B than a hotel but the hosts were so charming and we had the best holiday ever in Normandy, Le Mont St Michel, Normandy beaches, St Malo, Honfleur.... beautiful

This hotel in Bruges was the most romantic place we’ve ever stayed, think part of the movie In Bruges was filmed there

NYAH in Key West! It was the best place I've ever stayed in. Central, beautiful and v affordable. It's also a hostel / a hotel but it's v nice and definitely not your average hostel (hence the name) also they have chickens there that roam wild (you can't really stroke them)

El Dorado Royale in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Amazing hotel.

TapasForTwo · 11/04/2019 23:00

I have eaten a meal there sar302 Grin
We couldn't afford to stay there so we stayed at a cheap motel nearby and went to the Madonna Inn for dinner. It is an astonishing place.

@Mrsong

Excellence Playa Mujeres is also our favourite. We have been 4 December's in a row now. There is no where better on earth.

The staff are amazing, the food, the facilities. I bought the room spray in the gift shop and spray it on days I miss Mexico. 😂 So sad I know.

Shenanagins · 11/04/2019 23:02

Gleneagles! Have been there for a romantic getaway, then mini honeymoon and latterly with the kids and in all scenarios didn’t disappoint.

If I’m honest the most surprising was how family friendly it is which I never noticed when I had been on decidedly non-family friendly stays.

Another vote for Gleneagles, always surpasses all expectations.

eeela · 11/04/2019 23:15

Forgot to say that I'm also interested in B&Bs or any other type of accommodation really!

Two very different places, but both stick in my mind as having an almost magical, other worldly feel about them.
