The best hotel you've ever stayed in (or "your favourite")

I'm not really asking about the most fancy/expensive/etc, but rather the hotel that you've most enjoyed staying in or that was most beautiful or well located or whatever made is the best to you. Can be in the UK or abroad (or a few!)

Talking about honeymoons with DP and it doesn't look like we're going to have the time immediately after the wedding to go away due to work and study, so we're thinking about making a list of places we want to stay/go and aim to do all of them in the first 5-10 years of marriage (depending on how expensive they are and how many we choose). I know the likelihood of us doing it is probably quite slim but it's good to dream.

We're fairly well travelled, but have only ever really travelled on the cheap or in quite generic AIs, so interesting/luxurious/fun hotels are key over "going somewhere new".

Really hoping to get some responses and spend the rest of the night googling!

This is the one place I'd love to go back to, spent a lovely few days here ten years ago just after we got married, Locanda San Vigilio, Lake Garda

@NakedAvenger I'm glad someone else likes the Clift! I think it might be a bit of an acquired taste, but I love it so much.

Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds. We stayed a few nights for our honeymoon and it was amazing. They’ve just renovated the restaurant too so I imagine it’s now even better. Beautiful rooms, incredibly quiet and just absolute bliss. Loved it and would return in a heartbeat.

We have stayed in some amazing hotels I er the years. The best was Carmel Valley Ranch - California. Just perfect. And another is Sonoma Mission Inn. - there’s a fantastic spa there.
Also loved:
The Pierre - nyc
The four seasons Palm Beach Florida
Baros Island the Maldives
The Mandarin Oriental, Knightsbridge.
But for me what always makes a holiday is being with people I love. I hope you have some brilliant times ahead of you.
If looking in the UK I recommend Alistair Sawday Special places - he never lets us down.

Monastera Santa Rosa
We often stay in cheaper places near amazing hotels and go for drinks!
The Hotel, South Beach, Miami
Not a hotel, but Brae Cottage on Monzie Estate is amazing, hot tub, completely secluded, not far from Gleneagles

For
Honeymoon type thing I would say mirihi in Maldives or kichwa tembo in Kenya or botlieskop in SA.
Otherwise I think you can’t beat a really good Airbnb (look at their ‘special places’ section or a really tent on a decent campsite in good weather. Or maybe a luxurious diveboat, such as the Pindito.

Slightlyjaded · 12/04/2019 22:05

Ngorogoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania. Magical, other worldly and unexpectedly luxurious.
Ana y Jose in Tulum. Special and reasonably priced
Lucknam Park for the best bed I ever slept in

Inniu · 12/04/2019 22:13

The Gora Kadan in Hakone Japan

And Ballyfinn in Ireland would be my favorites though my kids would probably vote for the Banyon Tree, Phuket or The Four Seasons, Hoi An

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/04/2019 22:46

Both bed and breakfasts, but not your ordinary B&Bs.
La Coeur de Saint Catherine in Honfleur, France.
Graceland vineyard on the road between stellenbosch and Somerset West in South Africa.

somewhereovertheroad · 12/04/2019 22:52

The Bath Abbey Hotel if you want a homely hotel which is great to stay in as a sole traveller. Really well located but not fancy. perfect if you feel like running away, having long lie-ins, vegging in front of a TV and doing a bit of site seeing. Anybody fancy a hop on hop off bus by themselves?

A very different hotel for different circumstances is Hotel suite Villa Maria in Tenerife where you can have a villa with private Hot tub but still eat in hotel. It's beautiful, very welcoming but not inexpensive.

hettie · 13/04/2019 07:12

Kijani on Lamu island Kenya..... Chartered a yacht around the Whitsunday Islands in Australia (not a hotel but.....) A houseboat round the backwaters if kerala is pretty special too. None of these are for for you if your into big luxury hotels though....
