The best hotel you've ever stayed in (or "your favourite")

I'm not really asking about the most fancy/expensive/etc, but rather the hotel that you've most enjoyed staying in or that was most beautiful or well located or whatever made is the best to you. Can be in the UK or abroad (or a few!)

Talking about honeymoons with DP and it doesn't look like we're going to have the time immediately after the wedding to go away due to work and study, so we're thinking about making a list of places we want to stay/go and aim to do all of them in the first 5-10 years of marriage (depending on how expensive they are and how many we choose). I know the likelihood of us doing it is probably quite slim but it's good to dream.

We're fairly well travelled, but have only ever really travelled on the cheap or in quite generic AIs, so interesting/luxurious/fun hotels are key over "going somewhere new".

Really hoping to get some responses and spend the rest of the night googling!

Bunga Raya in Borneo was fabulous.

Any mandarin oriental in Southeast Asia - I’ve stayed at a fair few and the service is incomparable. The ones in Europe, not so much.

For sheer wankery, staying at Raffles Singapore and walking down the central staircase whilst all dressed up was great.

The Four Seasons Resort at Punta Mita, Mexico.

Heaven is the only word to describe it.

I had an incredible night at The Gainsborough in Bath which i would 100% recommend but can't afford myself. it's just next to the bath thermae spa but also has its own spa with access to the waters.

paying for myself in Bath I stayed at 15 great Pulteney Street which was fantastic. The Gainsborough is a different league of luxury and service though.

Shangri-la Al Husn, Oman.
...child free, private beach, you get breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktail hour and minibar included in the daily rate so it it is not as wincingly expensive as it first sounds.
Moose I am dying to try Zighy Bay

EnormousDormouse · 12/04/2019 04:39

Oh yes and for atmosphere - Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Dripping with history, structurally unchanged since the 30s.
If you are put off by ancient plumbing and threadbare carpets avoid it; but if you like being serenaded by violins at breakfast and drinking mojitos at sunset in the gardens watching the world pass by it's utterly perfect.

Well I love the Sheraton in LA but it's never going to be an amazingly quirky place, rather your upmarket hotel with nice touches.

I would urge you to look on Alistair Sawdays special places website. An extensive list of outstanding/quirky/posh/fantastic hotels.

This place in the Yorkshire dales is simply unique and my favourite place ever

El Dorado Casitas Royale, Riviera Maya, Mexico - it was gourmet AI and every thing was amazing, food, staff, accommodation. The only place we've ever stayed where DH has said he would return!

The Bellagio, Las Vegas - Made better with a fountain view room

Jumeirah al Naseem, Dubai - Gorgeous resort and amazing restaurants. We spent a week there and didn't even see the whole resort

The Witchery, Edinburgh - Like going back in time to stay with royalty, the rooms are unbelievable.

Another vote for Gleneagles...so relaxing, definitely worth its 5* status
Gorgeous food, fabulous facilities ( spa and pool are amazing) with so much to do in glorious countryside....hoping to stay again for my birthday

Lauren83 · 12/04/2019 05:21

Park hotel Amsterdam, took DP for his 40th, the restaurant next to it MOMO was amazing

Stopyourhavering64 · 12/04/2019 05:29

Also worth a look is Prestonfield House, Edinburgh....very gothic rooms but service is impressive and understated, no spa but food is amazing ( owned by same group as The Witchery, which is also an incredible hotel
If you're looking for more exotic locations...
can thoroughly recommend
Anantara Rasananda on Koh Phangan...you arrive at hotel via speedboat directly onto beach a la James Bond!
Constance Lemuria on Praslin, Seychelles...staff are so friendly and again service is top notch in amazing location with beautiful beach and tropical gardens . Food is absolutely delicious

Both fantastic, both very different.

Hotel Walia in Maui, really beautiful, quiet and fantastic staff. Very nice for a romantic hideaway.

butterboo · 12/04/2019 06:10

Villa Dubrovnik is amazing, as is the Crazy Bear in Beaconsfield.

butterboo · 12/04/2019 06:13

Hotel villa Athena in Agrigento Sicily. Overlooks the valley of the temples.

Another vote for The Scarlet in North Cornwall. I've stayed in some pretty lovely hotels around the world but this one is still my favourite.

flumpybear · 12/04/2019 06:37

Zambia, about 20k up river of the Victoria Falls there's an island retreat. It's built on stilts, separate treetop bungalows, veranda looking out to the river, monkeys join you for breakfast which is served in your room, as they swing through the trees around you - get there by speedboat and everyone sits together at night dinner - we went on a speedboat up river and drank champagne as the sun was setting - lovely memories

Stravapalava · 12/04/2019 06:41

I'm going to sound like a proper wanker / show off, but Raffles in Singapore is amazing if you can have at least one night. You don't just get a room, you get a suite of rooms and your own butler. Complimentary everything (including a Singapore Sling upstairs in the Long Bar) and they can't do enough for you. You need this experience in your life!

Rosewood Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen Mexico.
