The best hotel you've ever stayed in (or "your favourite")

eeela · 11/04/2019 22:32

I'm not really asking about the most fancy/expensive/etc, but rather the hotel that you've most enjoyed staying in or that was most beautiful or well located or whatever made is the best to you. Can be in the UK or abroad (or a few!)

Talking about honeymoons with DP and it doesn't look like we're going to have the time immediately after the wedding to go away due to work and study, so we're thinking about making a list of places we want to stay/go and aim to do all of them in the first 5-10 years of marriage (depending on how expensive they are and how many we choose). I know the likelihood of us doing it is probably quite slim but it's good to dream.

We're fairly well travelled, but have only ever really travelled on the cheap or in quite generic AIs, so interesting/luxurious/fun hotels are key over "going somewhere new".

Really hoping to get some responses and spend the rest of the night googling!

Excellence playa mujeres Cancun

Yes 1000% over! Only been once and went to the Dominican Republic Excellence to try that. Would highly recommend Cancun one.

U.K.

  • Luton Hoo for fabulous vitality pool and taxis to ferry you around.
  • Langham because of the executive lounge
  • Soar Mill Cove self catering for the view.

Overseas

  • Earls Regent in Kandy for amazing service and the pool.
  • Peninsula in Kowloon for old world charm
  • Orange County Evolveback resorts for incredible service and stunning locations, particularly Kabini

DH used to be in the travel business so I have stayed in some VERY naice places.

My favourites are:
Park Hyatt, Paris
The Clift, San Francisco
Marigot Bay Resort, St Lucia
45 Park Lane, London (wouldn't go back now though Angry)
The Fairmont, Sonoma CA

Honorable mention:
Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman. A bit stuffy for me, but insanely beautiful and luxurious

CBeebies hotel at Alton Towers Grin

Only half joking

Forgot to add - my favourite out of all those might be the Clift. Not super posh, but it just has something that keeps me coming back. I think it might be the design of the room, or maybe the bar which looks like something out of a 40s film noir, or maybe the batshit lobby.

Loved:

Kimpton Palomar in Washington DC
Inn of the Spanish Garden in Santa Barbara
Library Hotel in NYC.

A long way and more B&B than hotel but Lumholtz Lodge in Australia, the lady looks after injured tree kangaroos and other animals and makes amazing homemade food and wine. Had a tree kangaroo jump on me, saw two bounce into trees and being fed, bottle fed a bettong, fed pademelon and possum and saw cassowary and platypus nearby. About an hour from Great Barrier Reef and Daintree rainforest.

W in Hong Kong, beautiful rooftop pool. Also smelt amazing!

Oh and about 15 years ago, the Sovyetskaya in St Petersburg, which I think has a different name now. Very pleasingly hadn’t moved on much from the Soviet era. Hot water only at certain hours and a samovar at the end of the hall guarded by a formiddable woman.

Eastern & Oriental in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. Old colonial hotel that has been done up with an infinity pool on the roof. Very grand with lots of history. And because it's in Malaysia not silly money. Enormous bedrooms too.
Also not a hotel, but we stayed in a cabin in monument valley in Utah, USA. There's only a handful of them right close to the famous stacks. Sunset and sunrise were amazing and it felt like there was no-one else around.

Also loved this place in Brazil: Posada Bromelias in Paraty, very romantic in the rainforest.

And Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town by bottom of Table Mountain and lovely tropical gardens with giant turtles and pool. Waffles with ice cream for breakfast as an option.

In Finland Arola Bears lovely homemade food and they took you on trips to see brown bears. Chalet accomodation with sauna and canoe, nothing fancy.

Spent a very special b'day at Tiger Lily on George St Edinburgh, lovely small quirky hotel. Lovely rooms, only problem we had was it was a bit hot I the room.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 12/04/2019 00:22

The Hotel Spielmann, in Ehrwald, Austria. Incredible food, beautiful scenery and lovely welcoming staff. And the spa was unbelievable - 7 different saunas, anyone?

I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

Hotel Martinez, Cannes - our honeymoon destination. It was spectacular.

I've been lucky enough to spend a week in the burj al Arab in du au which was out of this world. But I think my fave is the Mandarin oriental in Marrakesh (and their one in Paris). Can't go wrong with an MO

Incredible food

My favourite hotel (to the point I won't stay anywhere else when I visit the city) is the Park Consul hotel in Cologne. It's a little strange because I chop and change hotels when I visit anywhere else.

On our honeymoon we stayed in some right dives but the first few nights we’re at Thala Beach Lodge, a beach/rainforest combo nearer Port Douglas in Australia. I was too jetlogged and early in my stay to clock what it really cost but ten years later I still remember it oh so much.

SaintEyning · 12/04/2019 03:42

Phra Nang Lanta on Koh Lanta, southwest Thailand.

Ana y Jose in Tulum, Mexico
