I want a cat, but how do I make sure I get one that’s not an arsehole?

One that will be friendly and sit on my lap and purr, and not just hit my face at 5am for breakfast and then fuck off out until it gets hungry again?

Or are they all arseholes who let you pet them just often enough that you’ll keep feeding them?

I would recommend CP and go look at the cati a foster home. I fostered for 10 years.

One cat I looked after was a bit of a tough cookie, the first person who saw her she swiped with her claws out which I had never seen before, the next people to see she liked and I got a lovely Xmas card from her a couple of months later with a pic of her in front of the fire.

Another visitor to see a cat was a lady who was just turning 90, we put the cat on her knee and said cat sort of looked around, as if to say, this is where I should be, and settled down to sleep.

Oh and pic of mine being adorable.

I had a male Birman, he was incredibly affectionate and well behaved. He used to sleep with his paw on my face, under the covers, facing me with his terrible breath.. he played fetch and was basically a dog in a beautiful cat suit. He was so pretty, amazing blue eyes and gorgeous cream body with brown points, a real head turner, he knew it as well! He occasionally ventured outside (we live rurally) but never hurt any small creaures, he preferred being indoors, cuddled up to me, he really was perfect Smile

We have 2 BSH sisters who we've had since teeny kittens and are now 5 years old.

They both very much have their dickhead moments occasionally, but have always loved to be picked up and cuddled. They have never once bitten or scratched out of anger (only scratched by accident when jumping about)

One has always liked to climb up and snuggle on my shoulder into my neck since we got her, the other has only recently started to be more of a lap cat

I agree foster first.

I fostered a terrified grey blob for 2 weeks.

Then he decided he liked me. Now I live happily with a chatty friendly brave and loving grey cat of joy.

Arsehole behaviour limited to ignoring me totally when we are in the garden together.

And whining to play every night just as the news starts. Here he is fore your enjoyment

My Cat isn’t an arse at all. He has been described as kind by family who have visited. He follows his usual routine each day and is good as gold except for leaving the odd mouse out on the grass.

Alakazam8 · 02/04/2019 13:00

Sorry posted too quick. He was a rescue kitten and has been with me since 3 months old. Spent the first two weeks on me so couldn’t do anything! But fine apart from that.

Aebj · 02/04/2019 13:07

We have 2
Tiger is a mother hen. She checks the boys have gone to bed and stares at me when it’s bedtime! She isn’t a lap cat but will sit by my side to be pampered.
Wendy is well ..... mad!!! Evenings she just runs every where. Is scared of her tail and is a shitbag at 5:30am. Thankfully I get up at this time! She is however very cuddly .

Cats are awesome arseholes😂

BuckingFrolics · 03/04/2019 07:49

My cat stares at me at what he considers should be my bedtime. What is that all about? By 11 pm I'm made to feel guilty as hell for being up. Why do some cats want us to be in bed? So they can party?

doctorboo · 03/04/2019 12:55

Bella’s our rescue cat, 8 years old and loving that she’s the only cat here and won’t be moving on again (we’re her third or fourth owners, poor girl).
When she’s not asleep during the day she’ll cuddle up to me but will then snuggle dh and dh only once the kids are in bed. She’s very tolerant of the boy’s and let’s them cuddle her. It she won’t seek them out.

Things that have me saying “FFS Bella”:

She’s torn up the carpet in the lounge and has rejected the (many) scratch posts 😡

She does very little during the day - she has access to the garden but chooses to stay inside and then once we decide to go to bed she’ll do the biggest shit in the litter tray, jump on our pillows and get in dh’s face to say goodnight and then have a mad hour tearing up the flat.

We love her so much.

All cats are arseholes. I say this as someone currently with 2 who are treated on an equal better footing than the rest of the family. My girl is coming 3 and has mellowed in the last 6 months but still regularly gets stuck up trees and knocks over glasses of the kids milk to steal it. My year old boy is very loving and will sit on me and purr whether I want him or not but he bites when he wants food, bites when he wants stroked, bites when he doesn't know what he wants himself. He is also extremely greedy and has ibd. However we hand reared him from birth (mum rejected him) and love him to bits.

MulticolourMophead · 03/04/2019 13:59

I've not had a cat for 30 years. We're going to get one for me and the DCs this year. A rescue, we'd love to offer a cat a forever home. But I do remember the arsehole bits from before Grin

Onceuponacheesecake · 03/04/2019 14:05

I've had 5 cats. Two were mean fucks, 1 arsehole, 1 daftie who would go home with anyone and and 1 loyal affectionate cat. All boys apart from 1 of the mean ones. All rescued as kittens except for the loyal cat who I bought from a petshop as a kitten (I know, I really do know better but I had a moment of weakness and was young)
The odds are against you Grin

xWholeLottaRosiex · 03/04/2019 15:38

I've got three cats; all different personalities. One is an absolute arsehole and he is my favourite, coz he's sassy Smile

GottaGetUp · 05/04/2019 18:57

So, I have been perusing a cat rescue website, and almost all of the cats say no to family but yes to ‘mature family’ - any ideas what age children that means?

The only cats that say yes to family are a brother (5) and sister (3) pair who need to be homed together. They are also tabby which if I was being superficial is my favourite breed. DH says no way to two cats, would I be bonkers to try to talk him round? (We are utter newbies to pet ownership)

doctorboo · 05/04/2019 20:20

I say get them, more to love.

Wolfiefan · 05/04/2019 20:30

A bonded pair would keep each other company. They’re old enough to be neutered already and to have manners. You will be able to tell their personality (unlike kittens). But young enough that you could enjoy many many years together.
Why does he say no to two? It will cost more but shouldn’t be an awful lot more work. Plus tabbies are awesome!

Proseccoagain · 05/04/2019 20:37

I have two Birmans now, who sit on my lap and purr! The breed is well known for being people cats. Sometimes I cannot even walk for one or other of them round my ankles. Have had four previous cats, only the first one would sit on my lap. You just cannot tell with the average moggie, much as I love them, which is why I went for pedigree this time.

GottaGetUp · 05/04/2019 20:39

I think he was just a bit shocked at the idea. He says you’ve made a compelling case 😄

Proseccoagain · 05/04/2019 20:42

My cats know they get groomed and given treats at bedtime, so about 11pm they come and sit in front of me and give me the stare until I oblige. One of them comes and site on my chest in bed at about 6am, but I don't often oblige at that hour in the morning! I swear they can tell the time!

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/04/2019 20:43

When it’s animal related you can ignore husbands wishes. They’ll come around to the idea in the end.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 05/04/2019 20:57

I'm owned by 2 ragdolls and a moggy. They run the house. They can be arses but I lock them downstairs at night so they can't gone and paw my face etc get 2 they'll keep each other company

GottaGetUp · 06/04/2019 12:11

Well, the pair weren’t at the centre, and another beautiful girl stole my heart instead...
