I want a cat, but how do I make sure I get one that’s not an arsehole?

One that will be friendly and sit on my lap and purr, and not just hit my face at 5am for breakfast and then fuck off out until it gets hungry again?

Or are they all arseholes who let you pet them just often enough that you’ll keep feeding them?

You're forgetting the golden rule. You don't choose a cat, the cat chooses you. You get what you're given Smile

FlorencesHunger · 30/03/2019 22:29

Most cats are arse holes unfortunately, there are probably some breeds that are predisposed to having a good nature but still probably not guaranteed.

This is mine, she is the cuddliest cat ever and invites for belly rubs aren't a trap. Flipside is she loves company and doesn't like being left alone despite being an outdoor cat.

I’ve had 5 cats. I went for a kitten and came home with the kitten and his mum from cat protection. The mum was a completely gorgeous cuddly blh. She had been found living in a field with her kittens and I think she just loved having a home. My kitten turned into a beautiful ginger Tom but only became cuddly after his mum died. Unfortunately he died from rat poisoning Sad.
I later adopted a little boy and then shortly after 2 sisters. The girls were born prem and hand reared. I can’t sleep, go the loo, sit down for 5 mins without company Grin. The girls are completely into humans. Visitors get smothered!

My older boy was adopted, he spent 4 years as a stray. He basically eats, sleeps, demands constant cuddles/strokes and gazes adoringly at me
He couldn't catch a cold let alone an animal and would rather cuddle me than be outside. In summer he sleeps in the next door neighbours hedge HmmConfused in the day and he cries not to go out if it's rain/wind/cold

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 22:35

Oh and each time mine sleeps he's dies a little bit. I have before now had the bedroom all lit up at 4 in the morning lifting and shaking his head trying to wake him shouting his name, when he does wake up he just gets extremely pissed off at me and pisses off, until the point I am just slipping off to sleep again then lands with a thud on my exposed arm, like he's jumped off the ceiling, never fails to scare the lvong crap outta me.

Either that or he falls off the radiator onto me, or off the sofa, so the fact that hes decided that the white linen table runner is fav place, in a way is a relief, despite it making me angry. Little git!

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 22:37

Oh and he's an angry one, he gets cross and no-one dares touch him; or he shouts at you if you look at him when he's peeing/pooing.

Be careful what you wish for. My old rescue cat joined the household as a young adult. She spent the first month hiding in a box in the kitchen. And the remaining 12 years of her life glued to me whenever I was in the house. If I sat down, she jumped on my lap. If I bent over, she jumped on my back. If I knelt down, she sat on my shoulder. And if I was moving she would follow me round the house.

I got nothing done as it was so hard to move with a fluffy, warm, purring moggy on my lap.

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 22:42

Are those pink penises Queen ?!

Penguinpandarabbit · 30/03/2019 22:42

Get a female one. 😎

Females tend to stay in more and cuddlier. Ours stays in 24/7 and cuddles all day. However, she does also demand DH feeds her in the night. She has managed to make a meow that sounds like now and at 1.30am she goes right up to DH and meows now. Repeats every 15 minutes, increases to a bat on the nose with it until she wins. He went out today so she asked him for a cuddle, purred then bit him. She thinks I can't fetch food at night thankfully.

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 22:45

Tricksy creatures that tempt you to rub their soft furry underbelly, then perform the excruciating claw and teeth grab of the offending hand and arm. Bloody psycho's!

madcatladyforever · 30/03/2019 22:45

I've had several cats and always get feral. Once I've tamed them they are as soft as butter and very loyal.

WonderGirl11 · 30/03/2019 22:46

We got a randomly chosen male kitten at new year. He is now 5mths and sooooo gentle and loving! Always sits next to us for cuddles.

I think there may be something in the males are friendly theory!

LeslieYep · 30/03/2019 22:49

We picked up two rescue kittens. Not the nicest start, but a beautiful brother sister pair.
They are the friendliest, purriest, lappest of cats. We do keep them downstairs at night though thanks to their love of pouncing on anything under the duvet that might be 'prey'...
But we're very lucky in how friendly they are and they are amazingly tolerant of our toddler.

sobeyondthehills · 30/03/2019 22:51

one of them comes on dog walks with me every day.

My cat does this, one time a doberman stole my dog's ball. My dog started whining and suddenly from nowhere my cat shoots out the bushes to take on this fucking massive dog.

Funnier still, he only has 3 legs, having lost a fight with a car. The doberman took one look at the situation and ran off laughing with said ball, with a 3 legged ginger cat chasing after him. God knows what he was actually going to do

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 22:52

madcatlady know that one! Heartbroken at loss of little feral kitty recently, she was the most chirruppy adoring and adorable little sweetie. No even a sniff of arsehole about her. Pure gold. Sad

Wubba11 · 30/03/2019 22:52

Every ginger cat I've ever met has been incredibly friendly. No idea if thats a coincidence but others have said the same.

TheABC · 30/03/2019 22:55

Neutered males are definitely soppier. I am currently buried under my Maine Coon (apparently they are not lap cats, but he did not get the memo about the lap or being a cat). He also thinks he is a dog that will happily eat broccoli as long as it's hand-fed by the toddler, sleeps on top of the fish tank and punches DH awake if he sleeps past 8am.

Welcome to cat-slavery.

VallarMorghulis · 30/03/2019 22:55

They're all arseholes!

BertrandRussell · 30/03/2019 22:57

“Aw! All cats are not arseholes. Just misunderstood. ”
There speaks a poor brainwashed soul....

EleanorOalike · 30/03/2019 22:57

I’ve had 3 cats. One was an arsehole, one was a darling little sweetheart and one was a mix of both and also had the odd psychotic episode where she’d suddenly run into the lounge, freeze, move her ears back as far as they could go, hiss then howl in a demonic voice then career all over the house, upstairs and down stairs for 30 minutes flat until she suddenly reset back to normal.

Cats are like Russian Roulette. Good luck, soldier.

Kobea · 30/03/2019 22:58

@Wubba11 my ginger cat bullies every other cat it comes into contact with and regularly gets his brothers into fights with other cats in the street too. He also shits in the bath if I don't feed him 9am on the dot and will attempt to maul anything which comes within 5 metres of him. He is an evil little bastard but he sometimes meows at me so I continue to love him.

thaegumathteth · 30/03/2019 23:03

I wish I knew. I had several cats growing up - one was psychotic, one was sweet but not cuddly and one was the stupidest animal I’ve ever seen.

Dh and I got a kitten as our first pet as adults when I was a student. She was there through a lot over the years including two kids, a dog, a house move etc. We lost her last year and I’m genuinely worried no new cat will love up to her - she never once bit or scratched even when the kids were tiny and noisy, she purred like a train and she was just the gentlest sweetest wee thing.

Dd (8) was beyond devastated when she died - I’m worried a grumpy cat might upset her even more but I think we are going to bite the bullet!

sweetkitty · 30/03/2019 23:07

Was also going to say all cats are arseholes it’s part of their inate charm. I used to have 3, one boy very soppy like a dog, another boy hated everyone until he got old and forgot he hated us all and became a lap cat and one scared little girl. Now have a pair of boy girl kittens. Boys turning into a sop follows you everywhere shouting at you, girl is a quiet sensible wee thing, not overly affectionate likes a fuss but not high maintenance.

Scenario - cat walked in room shouted cat, cat completely ignored, dog came running (sums it up really)

sideorderofchips · 30/03/2019 23:09

Don’t be fooled by this cats cute face. He is a total dick

He shits in the bath even with a clean tray. He pukes up food he has stolen off the side. And he goes for any small child that runs past him. He has to meow every five minutes to tell me what he’s doing.

But he is a lap cat and loves to be cuddled like a baby. So of course has me wrapped around his finger.
