But isn't it an usual response to someone saying their age that you think they look younger, even if you don't?
Or if you're asked to guess the age, taking a few years or ten off because guessing younger is less insulting than guessing older.

Everyone enjoys a gentle ego-wanking

dumplingPie · 13/03/2019 16:22

I always cringe when people ask me to guess how old they are. Then they guess my age and I'm always younger. I don't actually look younger but people just want to be nice. Still cringe worthy though.

When I was admitted to hospital a couple of years ago, people routinely read me as much younger than I am (no clothes, makeup, children to give clues to my age). It kept coming up because you have to shout in earshot of every bugger confirm your date of birth upteen times a day for meds etc and I repeatedly got shocked responses, including one woman saying she thought I was in my teens. It is no virtue on my part other than having a baby face and good genes though.

All that said, in the last couple of years, as I’m edging into perimenopause, there is a definite change in skin tone and quality and I reckon I’m hurtling quite quickly towards looking my age. I don’t care though. I don’t dye my hair and have no plans other than basic maintenance to try and hold back the tide. I don’t really see what’s so marvelous about looking younger other than a fetishized concept of youth. I’m happy to get older, it’s way better than the alternative.

I'm 30 in April & still get ID'd.
It's annoying whilst shopping with the Kids, especially When Asda ID'd for Shandy Blush

BikeRunSki · 13/03/2019 16:27

I am 48. People are always surprised at how old I am, and think I a. 5-10 years younger. Even when I was a teenager, people thought my sister was older than me. She is 4 years younger.

blueskiesovertheforest · 13/03/2019 16:30

Why does everyone know how old people think they are?

Age never comes up in normal conversation among adults I know.

I've known a few people who demand others guess their age, but it's a transparent way to beg desperately for a compliment - they must know everyone tries to be kind/ polite and guesses inside their head then actually says a number 10 years lower... There is no other reason to ask people to guess your age than to fish for a complimentary answer...

GregoryPeckingDuck · 13/03/2019 16:39

I have people telling me I look anywhere from five years younger to five years older. I think it’s all situational and dependant onhow old people expect you to be.

"everyone tries to be kind/ polite and guesses inside their head then actually says a number 10 years lower..."

That's exactly what I do.

Kenworthington · 13/03/2019 16:47

Oh yeah FUCK OFF DAILY MAIL you ain’t getting my photo

MaMisled · 13/03/2019 16:50

I'm 52 and recently lost 4.5st. Body looks hot, face looks like a walnut.

Oldbutlovely · 13/03/2019 16:54

Oh, I’m hoping to be discovered by the DM Smile

LuckyLou7 · 13/03/2019 17:03

Whenever I've been confronted by someone demanding to know how old I think they are, I always subtract a decade from what I really think, because every 40yo wants to believe they could pass for 30.
My granny would insist on asking everyone, from the man in the corner shop to the lollipop lady, how old do you think I am? When they tactfully said 75, she would proudly announce NO I AM 93!!

SongforSal · 13/03/2019 17:03

Tinty you look so naturally pretty. And have a friendly face like the kind of woman who would feed my cats for a couple of weeks whilst I was on holiday, and then knock back the duty free with me when I returned Grin

Cookmysock1 · 13/03/2019 17:07

49 don't think I look too bad, with lots of warpaint

I used to look younger, I'm not sure now.

I'm 41. I keep getting ID'ed in Marks and Spencers buying wine, but I suspect that's a very rigorous checking process, or I go in at quiet time when the staff are bored! The lines on my forehead really age me.

ScreamingValenta · 13/03/2019 17:14

Older, without a doubt.

I've had a hard life!

Downhillrider · 13/03/2019 17:15

I thought this site would be full off young people I don't feel so bad for being old now!

LaMarschallin · 13/03/2019 17:17

Just googled "Catherine Tate: how old does Tony think I am" to cheer myself up.
Wouldn't dare post a picture of myself on here (kudos to those who have; you all look lovely). I haven't as much confidence as Blanche Du Bois in the kindness of strangers in my case Smile
Yes, I do think I look younger than I am but haven't got any being IDed stories. Instead, I was upgraded on Eurostar because a kind lady thought I was pregnant (me! Apple shaped, post holiday stuffing my face, bad postured, baggy top wearing me - excuses Blush).
I was thrilled she thought I looked young enough to be PG.
Hey, I take my compliments where I can.

blueskiesovertheforest · 13/03/2019 17:35

We get our beer delivered - the nice men leave it on our doorstep in a crate once per month usually 11 year old DS carries the crate in when he and DD get home from school nobody gets IDed ...

thecatsthecats · 13/03/2019 17:43

Younger. Well, younger than my friends of the same age, mostly. I cultivated the friendship of a group of smokers!

On my mum's side of the family they tend to look older when teens, then level out mid twenties, and look younger at older ages. I think I've just crossed the threshold into looking younger.

TheNavigator · 13/03/2019 17:58

I look incredibly young and beautiful, all my family do with our wonderful genes. It is a terrible burden because I am not taken seriously at work, despite being super senior, high flying and considerably richer and better looking than any one else on here. Sigh.

In reality, I look my age, I am in my 50s and have had a tough road at times and it shows. Also I am slim, which I think ages my face, but due to my sport I don't want to put weight on to flesh out the wrinkles. I guess there is more to life than looking young, because we are all going to be skulls one day.

Everyone who has posted photos on this thread looks beautiful, whatever their age.

At LEAST ten years. The rougher or more decrepit they look, the more I knock off.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 13/03/2019 18:20

Although I think I look ok for my age, I have a strong suspicion I actually look older. Whenever I tell people my age there's a bit of a tumbleweed moment , where most people are told "you look younger". Instead, I am faced with diplomatic silence.
