What would you think if you saw a middle aged woman roller skating down the street?

Honestly? My finger is hovering on the buy button. I see grown men flying along the street on skateboards and scooters but can't say I ever see adults on roller skates. I was a 70's kid, loved roller skating and teens were spent hanging out at the local roller disco. My first pair of skates were those metal adjustable ones that you strapped onto your normal shoes Grin. Then I got 'proper' skates, blue suede with rainbow stripes which I would still have had my brother not found them in my parents garage and sold them at a carboot Angry. Back then we just skated on the roads as there were hardly any cars, not even sure you're allowed to skate on pavements Confused. Anyway have a hankering to take it up again, mainly for fitness trying to keep my arse up where it belongs , I went ice-skating for the first time in years recently and picked it up again no problem, balance and coordination good so what's the verdict? Am i going to look like a twat?

I would think there is a woman roller skating.

Just wear long sleeves. Please.

lottielady · 03/03/2019 13:17

Ha! I could have written your post 5 years ago, then DP bought me a pair of the rainbow roller boots, and I put them on and nearly shat myself.

I used to be like a non-porny Rollergirl, but every bit of confidence (and core strength) had left me in the intervening years.

I was gutted.

Smattchy · 03/03/2019 13:17

I'd probably power walk behind you and try and befriend you Blush

I'd admire your enthusiasm and zest for life! Go for it, life is too short!

GreenThing · 03/03/2019 13:18

You'll probably start a trend!

I'm at an age where I don't actually care what anyone thinks, so I'd do it.

I have such poor coordination that I can't even ride a kick scooter though, so no real life skating for me. Grin

BaronessBomburst · 03/03/2019 13:18

I'd think I was in LA. Grin

countdowntonap · 03/03/2019 13:19

I’d think you were amazing and wish that I was brave enough to do the same.

dudsville · 03/03/2019 13:19

I loved roller skates when I was a kid! I'd admire you.

NuffSaidSam · 03/03/2019 13:19

If I saw you on the pavement I'd think 'twat' unless you were going very slowly.

If you were in the park I'd think 'ooh cool' and be a bit jealous.

Go for it. (But don't be a twat and do it on the pavement!)

QuaterMiss · 03/03/2019 13:19

"There is a woman roller-skating down the street.

Lucky thing!"

Oh these are encouraging Smile. I did wonder about the protective gear that didn't exist back in the day, probably a good idea (I am nearer 50 than 40!).

Can I just say that I bought the boots and was terrified. They're not as breezy and effortless as they look. I tottered about, fell over and then the fear of broken bones settled and they've stayed in the cupboard ever since.

TSSDNCOP · 03/03/2019 13:23

I'd feel the urge to buy some too. The pavement here is so shit though. I used to skate in Greenwich park, the best ever was blading up the beach path from Santa Monica towards Malibu.

Angrybird123 · 03/03/2019 13:23

I have several friends (middle aged women) who do roller Derby which I gather is skating v v fast and crashing into each other. Its not for me but they love it. Maybe she was practising.

cyclecamper · 03/03/2019 13:23

I'd think "Lucky her! I wish I had time to get my skates out and have some lessons to get better at them"

It's on my to do list. I'm fat and 48 xxx

magimedi · 03/03/2019 13:23

I see loads of people well over 50 skating along the sea front near to where I live.

Go for it!

SherlockHolmes · 03/03/2019 13:23

I'd think you were fantastic! Good on you. Get your skates on ...

UterusUterusGhali · 03/03/2019 13:25

I'd think "how bloody cool is she".

I actually saw a woman in Southsea skating alongside her son (I guess?) who was cycling recently. I was well jell.

ChinkChink · 03/03/2019 13:25

I go out on my kick scooter. I'm older than you. Don't give a shit.

TheSassyAssassin · 03/03/2019 13:25

I'd think wow and wish I could do it....though I'd be singing "Oooooh Bodyform, Bodyform for youuuuu" in my head Grin

Unescorted · 03/03/2019 13:25

Cool! Do it.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 03/03/2019 13:26

There's a bike park near us which has Roller Skating Mum and Unicycling Dad. Thank fuck for the kids they are not married to each other. The woman looks cool once she's off the grass bit, she can keep up with the kids on their bikes, she's got other people thinking 'I wish I had skates.' I can promise you no one is thinking any of those things about the idiot on the unicycle. Or the middle aged wankers wiping out all the children on the skate ramps.

crosstalk · 03/03/2019 13:26

Another who'd be cheering you on.

Topseyt · 03/03/2019 13:26

I'd think she was nuts, but if that's what floats your boat then go for it.

littlebillie · 03/03/2019 13:27

I did it recently Blush

Coffeeandcrumpet · 03/03/2019 13:28

I love skating and skate a fair bit but skating on normal pavements is bloody hard work, you don't notice the state of them if not on wheels. Why not find a local roller skating rink?
