What would you think if you saw a middle aged woman roller skating down the street?

Honestly? My finger is hovering on the buy button. I see grown men flying along the street on skateboards and scooters but can't say I ever see adults on roller skates. I was a 70's kid, loved roller skating and teens were spent hanging out at the local roller disco. My first pair of skates were those metal adjustable ones that you strapped onto your normal shoes Grin. Then I got 'proper' skates, blue suede with rainbow stripes which I would still have had my brother not found them in my parents garage and sold them at a carboot Angry. Back then we just skated on the roads as there were hardly any cars, not even sure you're allowed to skate on pavements Confused. Anyway have a hankering to take it up again, mainly for fitness trying to keep my arse up where it belongs , I went ice-skating for the first time in years recently and picked it up again no problem, balance and coordination good so what's the verdict? Am i going to look like a twat?

There are Rollar Clubs near us and there is no one under 40 taking part. Bless their broken limbs!

littlebillie · 03/03/2019 13:30

I always skate at centre Parcs too much to my kids horror

PottyPotterer · 03/03/2019 13:31

There is a roller rink within driving distance but it's quite expensive. Our local park has a brand new path all the way round it and an actual skate park that DS scoots on but I'm not up for stunts or anything Grin.

My friend who’s nearly 50 has some and uses them often.... useful for chasing after her ds on his bike

littlebillie · 03/03/2019 13:32

Surfer Grin I'm old enough not to care and well it's an ageist comment

ScafellPoke · 03/03/2019 13:32

There’s a roller derby near me that I want to join

rioroller · 03/03/2019 13:33

I have namechanged for this, but roller skating is having a massive (middle aged) resurgence.

Our local roller disco runs grownups only weekly sessions, there’s adult artistic skate lessons popping up on Facebook. Even in the mixed age sessions it’s dominated by old farts like me.

I go to a couple of discos or a dedicated skatepark session most weeks, I wouldn’t roller skate on the street though. It’s crap, there are stones, dog poo, grumpy pedestrians and cars.

Go to a roller disco, hire some skates, get a feel for what you like and what fits (skate sizes are ermmm....odd) and for the love of sweet baby Jesus buy some wrist guards as a minimum. Preferably knee pads too.

Where are you in the country? I might know some Beginners groups for you — feel free to PM me, and happy skating.

Sandsnake · 03/03/2019 13:34

I’d think you were great. Do it! Seriously, those who think that you’re a twat are truly not worth caring about. I’ve got some amazing in-line skates that I used to use fo my commute to work. Halved the walk time at least!

littlebillie · 03/03/2019 13:34

Please buy the wrist splints as a minimum protection

youarenotkiddingme · 03/03/2019 13:34

Is think

"Wish I had the confidence balance and coordination to do that" Grin

Advertise locally and start a group so you can meet over your local park

SurgeHopper · 03/03/2019 13:45

Just another manic Monday

Cornish83 · 03/03/2019 13:48

When you’re young you care so much what people think but eventually you grow out of that and realise that you’re not living for them and you do what makes you happy and then you wonder why you wasted so much life caring about what other people might have thought who you don’t even know anymore but missed out because by the time you get to the age when you realise this you’ve wasted the best years thinking it mattered. It’s worrying about things like this that cause social anxiety with youngsters but older people don’t care what other people think as they’re not thinking about other people’s options they are just doing what they want and enjoying it.
I love being old and care free couldn’t be happier just wish I had have been this way in my 20s and 30s but hey 🤷‍♀️

Stuckforthefourthtime · 03/03/2019 13:49

I know someone who rollerblades to work through a big park! She's v senior and well over 40, and so much fun Smile
