What would you think if you saw a middle aged woman roller skating down the street?

Honestly? My finger is hovering on the buy button. I see grown men flying along the street on skateboards and scooters but can't say I ever see adults on roller skates. I was a 70's kid, loved roller skating and teens were spent hanging out at the local roller disco. My first pair of skates were those metal adjustable ones that you strapped onto your normal shoes Grin. Then I got 'proper' skates, blue suede with rainbow stripes which I would still have had my brother not found them in my parents garage and sold them at a carboot Angry. Back then we just skated on the roads as there were hardly any cars, not even sure you're allowed to skate on pavements Confused. Anyway have a hankering to take it up again, mainly for fitness trying to keep my arse up where it belongs , I went ice-skating for the first time in years recently and picked it up again no problem, balance and coordination good so what's the verdict? Am i going to look like a twat?

Less odd than seeing adults on scooters

Why?

Mid life crisis?

At what age do we have to stop doing things that are fun and settle down into boring mediocrity?

PottyPotterer · 03/03/2019 17:11

Mid life crisis? No had that years ago when I decided to do a degree aged 40!

So I tried some inline skates on in a sports store this afternoon and had a wee go up the aisle, they were amazing! You just sort of glide, much easier than I thought, really thought I wanted old school skates but might have to rethink. Definitely going to try the roller rink and hire some before I buy and yes, I'll stay off the streets at least until I'm more confident. We're near a beach with a very long promenade so will stick to that and the park for a while.

Have attached a pic of my old skates, yes they were velveteen Grin

Lottielady - non-porny rollergirlGrinGrin

Mumsymumphy · 03/03/2019 17:18

I had the velvet blue bootskates with yellow stripes & yellow stoppers when I was 10. They were pinched out of my dad's car but i found them outside the local shops lol.

Anyway, I digress! I'd say go for it & don't give a fig what other people might think.

I take my 2 youngest to a local skating rink and zoom off while they're pottering round the rink holding onto the sides, waving merrily as I pirouette past Grin Grinwish they did adult-only sessions, I'd be there like a shot

Bohbell · 03/03/2019 17:18

Awesome! I’d consider trying it myself.

LadyMaryC · 03/03/2019 17:27

Go for it

Seeing you would remind me of my inline skates in the undestairs cupboard. I really should get them out but I’m a tad scared. Last time I was on them I had a stupid fall and broke my wrist..... now I’ve got wrist guards I should try again and get over my nervousness

Amazing! I want to hang out with you OP!

icannotremember · 03/03/2019 17:45

I'd be envious.

MrsExpo · 03/03/2019 18:14

I’d think “Good or you” and probably feel a bit jealous .......

...... goes off to look at roller skates on Amazon .........

Purpletigers · 03/03/2019 18:46

I’d be jealous and go and buy a pair too

littlecloudling · 03/03/2019 18:48

Hang on.... I have one question- do I go for inline skates or roller boot skates?

notsurewhatshappening · 03/03/2019 18:49

Do it! Especially if the skates have rainbows on!!

ohtheholidays · 03/03/2019 18:58

I'd think bloody good for her!

If it's something you can do and you want to do it,go for it!

I'm only 43 and I'm ill and disabled now and there is now so many things I can no longer do but if I had the chance again I'd do all of those things again and I wouldn't give a flying fuck what anyone else had to say. Grin

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 03/03/2019 19:00

I've seen a fair few London commuters on scooters (not motorised mobility scooters, but two wheeled push along ones with handles) so a pair or skates, is actually pretty normal.

SpringForEver · 03/03/2019 19:05

I could never skate, not any kind of skating, pavements or ice, am envious of anyone that can stay upright.

Some years ago I would look out of my window in London and see a whole crowd of people skating along the road, it looked so much fun. They took up the entire width of the road and there were many of them.

Might have been this www.provizsports.com/en-gb/blog/night-tribes-london-s-street-skaters/

Missmarplesknitting · 03/03/2019 19:07

I'd be super jealous because I live on the the side of a hill and skating is not an option round here

Go for it!

StandardLampski · 03/03/2019 19:14

I skate. But mostly at a roller rink with my daughter, or other adult friends. Sometimes in a park. I wouldn't do it down the street - far to hilly and imagine fairly uneven surfaces.

But go for getting skates! I've acquired both quads and inline second hand (practically new) for about a fiver each. So much fun and a bit of exercise!

PottyPotterer · 03/03/2019 19:14

Have to say I'm so cheered by all the positive responses, I can't wait to get going now. Just have to see I can drag someone along to the roller rink for my first visit. It won't be DS, he tried some on today and couldn't stand up, instantly declared it wasn't for him Grin.

I have one question- do I go for inline skates or roller boot skates?

This is my dilemma, thought I wanted roller boots but liked the feel of the inline skates, do prefer the look of the old style boots though. Will see what I think after I've tried both, going to try and go to the rink next weekend.

I would think cool!

ARandomPoster · 03/03/2019 19:18

I would think " Who is that? Will she be my friend? And where can I buy me a pair of them there skates?"

Every time there's a gusty day I want to strap on a pair of skates, hold my coat up above my head and windskate down the street just like I did as a kid.

Jamhandprints · 03/03/2019 19:21

I used to live in Madrid and it was a really popular sport round the main park, for all ages. England is so boring sometimes. Go for it! :-)

TroysMammy · 03/03/2019 19:26

Just don't wear a short skirt and carry a bottle and glass of Martini on a tray Grin

FurrySlipperBoots · 03/03/2019 19:29

I would think they were awesome!! Only if they were wearing helmet though. Just bear in mind middle aged people are far more breakable than those in their youth!
