I’m weaning off cocodamol after years and my constipation is just dreadful. I need to go several tunes a day and when I try it’s just tiny malteser size bits! Sorry tmi. Anyway, please give me your best advice as to how to have a good clear out!?

Prune juice. A glass a day. Helped during my pregnancy. It doesn't taste that bad too.
Thanks for you OP. Constipation is bloody awful!

Sallyspoons · 01/03/2019 17:42

Syrup of figs. Not the nicest taste but clears you out.

SuperHeroMum · 01/03/2019 17:44

Bisocodyl! I had terrible constipation from medication a few years ago and that sorted it right out!
Take two at night and don't plan on leaving the house the next day!

Epsom salts, dont go far from loo though

GVmama · 01/03/2019 17:44

All bran cereal (with milk) and a pint of warm water (to drink!) for breakfast, every day until it eases and then once or twice a week going forward.

AnnaMagnani · 01/03/2019 17:45

Macrogol - or whatever brandname the chemist is selling it under. Movicol is the most common but there are many generic ones now.

Blastandtroph · 01/03/2019 17:45

Very strong coffee followed by a few tinned prunes. Might be worth regularly using a stool softener too until things are less Malteser like.

Saucery · 01/03/2019 17:47

Dried apricots or linseeds. The former are more palatable but the latter act fast.

ChakiraChakra · 01/03/2019 17:47

I second a stool softener, makes all the difference. Senocot too.

sparklefarts · 01/03/2019 17:49

Honestly?

Have too much sugar, followed by a strong coffee and a cigarette. Guaranteed to give me the, erm, shits.

Momzilla82 · 01/03/2019 17:49

One of these www.archturus.co.uk/ENEMA-KIT-p/h0601.htm

Glycerine suppositories, and a good probiotic to even up bacterial balance, going forwards.

FrangipaniBlue · 01/03/2019 17:49

Mug of strong black coffee on an empty stomach when you get up in the morning, followed by a pint glass of ice cold water

sparklefarts · 01/03/2019 17:49

(However, medically, I don't recommend that seriously)

stargirl1701 · 01/03/2019 17:51

Prunes. 250g a day. Stay near the loo.

Sexnotgender · 01/03/2019 17:53

Homemade lentil soup - red lentils, carrots, swede, leeks.
All bran
Orange juice with bits

I was horribly constipated recently as very pregnant and had to take iron tablets. The above kept me regular.

goingtotown · 01/03/2019 17:54

A dessert spoonful of ground linseeds sprinkled on cereal or mixed with fruit & yogurt every morning does the trick for me. Are you drinking enough water OP?

Sexnotgender · 01/03/2019 17:54

Don’t take lactulose unless you also have a gas mask...

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 01/03/2019 17:55

I had 3 espressos one after the other once.Big mistake I nearly shit myself! So that could work

SpringForEver · 01/03/2019 17:59

Olive oil.

StillMedusa · 01/03/2019 18:05

Prunes aren't going to cut it after codeine.
Tackle both ends at once... either Movicol (takes afew days but you can keep upping the sachets) or bisocdyl (dulcolax) ..quicker but crampy... for the tope end and glycerine/bisocodyl suppositories for the bottom end... lie on your left side and have a hot drink while it's in.

Constipation queen here!!!

weaselwords · 01/03/2019 18:18

Dulcolax as I couldn’t get hold of movicol. Sorted me out after I got horribly bunged up to the point I thought it was going to come out the wrong way Envy Dulcolax saved me

MikeUniformMike · 01/03/2019 18:21

Lactulose. The recommended dose first thing in the morning before a cuppa or breakfast. Don't stray too far from the loo.
It is harmless compared to laxatives.

E20mom · 01/03/2019 18:22

Just buy Movicol over the counter at Boots. It will definitely work.

frogbull · 01/03/2019 18:22

Loads of red wine. I have no trouble going the morning after a really heavy red wine night.

SallyWD · 01/03/2019 18:22

I've had constipation my whole life. The only thing that helps me is loads of water, a big bowl of all bran for breakfast every day and a high fibre diet.
