Who are your DC dressing as for world book day?

It's my pfb first world book day at nursery, so I'm excited. I expect the novelty will have worn off by next year, and I'll hate it Grin

Jesus. When is it?

Pishogue · 25/02/2019 14:17

Sorry, I didn't actually mean he's going as Jesus. I just meant 'Dear God, that can't be coming around again.'

babysharkah · 25/02/2019 14:17

Thank fuck you can buy costumes now. Mine is going as the Cheshire Cat. She's never been one to be understated.

7th march

JourneyOfSelfImprovement · 25/02/2019 14:19

Oh FFS not this again Grin it soon comes round!

BlueMerchant · 25/02/2019 14:19

Mrs.Tiggywinkle and an Oliver. What are your ideas? Tbh it annoys me a bit. Every year our school is over-run with superheros!

ItchySeveredFoot · 25/02/2019 14:21

I'm trying to convince dd to go as little red reading hood from the book of the same name. All we'd need is a red hoodie. She wants to be a princess.

beela · 25/02/2019 14:21

Urgh. I was so smug that our school didn't do dressing up for world book day, and now we've got a new head and we've got to dress up (I say we, I mean dc).

Ds is going as Harry Potter. I'm trying to persuade dd that Elsa from Frozen isn't a book character, but she has a Frozen story book so I'm kind of losing that argument.

IggyAce · 25/02/2019 14:22

My ds loves the dinosaur that pooed series so I’ve convinced him to go as Danny, we have a small version of Dino to pop in a pocket, but it means he can just wear normal clothes.

BlueMerchant · 25/02/2019 14:23

That's what I said last year when dd insisted on Anna. Then she came down with the book!

MakeUpGirl · 25/02/2019 14:25

My DD is so excited for it this year and is dressing as George from The Smartest Giant in Town.
She genuinely loves the book and being her 1st year at school and her being able to read it for herself made me want to make a real effort for her.
I’m pretty sure the rest of reception will be full of princesses and super heroes though

Curlyshabtree · 25/02/2019 14:25

Hopefully the last year of it for me. Dts off to high school this year. Dtd will no doubt put something together and declare it’s someone from a Cathy Cassidy book. Dts will be “generic boy from book” as he was last year.....
Superheroes and princesses do have roots in fiction, a lot of folk will already have these costumes and can’ t afford owt else.

beela · 25/02/2019 14:26

bluemerchant Grin I've nearly sold her on Snow White, but I bet there will be other Elsas and Annas at school, and she'll be so cross with me!

RiverTam · 25/02/2019 14:26

I really want DD to go as Doctor Noel Zone so she can wear a TCOD (Tiny Cape of Doom) but it keeps falling on deaf ears.

WBD drives me nuts because it goes on the basis that a child's favourite book character isn't just... a child. DD loves Jacqueline Wilson (not the Victorian ones) but how can she go dressed as Katy, or Tracy Beaker's daughter? That's what she looks like every day! (non-uniform school).

Roomba · 25/02/2019 14:26

Thanks for the heads up, no doubt we'll get a letter about it two days before as usual Grin

No idea what DS wants to be this year, but previous attempts have been:
The rat from Ratburger (DS had a brown furry onesie +facepaint)
Mr Strong (huge square painted cardboard costume DS couldn't sit down in v well Grin)
Tom(?) from Sppok's Apprentice (Cape, long stick as a staff)
Harry Potter
Saucepan Man (kids plastic pan set wrapped in foil hung all around him)

BlueMerchant · 25/02/2019 14:32

I've heard of some of our local schools doing a theme within World Book Day. I know one year was 'magic' cue two hundred Harry Potters. Lots of parents complained about them having to adhere to the theme- rightly so.

QueenMabby · 25/02/2019 14:34

Our school is doing a theme of “bedtime stories” this year so all children just need to go in their pjs and take slippers. The relief! DD gutted as her group of friends intended to go as characters from Alice in Wonderland (about 8 or 10 of them) and she couldn’t wait to wear a Queen of Hearts outfit! 🙄😂

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 25/02/2019 14:35

My 8 year old is going as the BFG and they're reading the book in class so he's very excited and my 10 year old is going as Juliet Capulet

Orangedaisy · 25/02/2019 14:36

Silky the fairy from the faraway tree. Easy as we have fairy outfits already

JumpOrBePushed · 25/02/2019 14:36

Our school usually has a theme. I’m expecting that we’ll be told the theme this week.

On the one hand, it’s good because you don’t have to think too hard about what costume to get. But on the other hand, it makes it almost impossible to recycle costumes, especially if you have more than one DC.

BlueMerchant · 25/02/2019 14:40

Love the PJs idea- my two would love that.

MrsPear · 25/02/2019 14:40

Ds 1 - it is pjs day apparently he is wearing his Manchester United ones
Ds2 - tiger onesie as in the tiger that came to tea.

Soubriquet · 25/02/2019 14:42

My dd’s school aren’t doing it this year which is a shame as I had a lovely idea as sending her as a butterfly for the end of hungry caterpillar.

Instead, I’m supposed to create a label to stick to the front of dd’s uniform, and they can then discuss their chosen book with their friends

Pascha · 25/02/2019 14:43

Our theme is tied in with the national science week the next week. Theme covering both is Journeys and so school would like children to come dressed for a journey or exploration.

Both boys want to emulate Steve Backshall climbing so I'm trying to find a very cheap vest thing they can hang carabiners with their compasses and binoculars etc and maybe a utility belt. Since there is no money to spend on this crap it will be made out of whatever I can cobble from home.

I loathe WBD.

WhiteHartLane · 25/02/2019 14:44

My 5 year old is going as The Owl who was afraid of the dark.
