Who are your DC dressing as for world book day?

It's my pfb first world book day at nursery, so I'm excited. I expect the novelty will have worn off by next year, and I'll hate it Grin

DS has to go as a character from a traditional fairytale. He doesn't want to be a Prince, a wolf, a woodcutter, the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin or a dwarfHmm.

Any other ideas gratefully accepted!

Gibble1 · 26/02/2019 00:23

My kids both hated dressing up and I remember asking them one year what they wanted to dress up as so I could sort their costumes. DD said “no” and DS (2 years younger) said “I’m going as a student. In my school uniform” to which DD piped up “YES! That’s what I’m going as too!”. Don’t think I ever got them into school in costumes after that so aged 7&9 at the oldest. They were happy to put the money in but just hate fancy dress!

Rockbird · 26/02/2019 00:45

I usually try to assemble a costume from clothes we already have but sodding that for a game of soldiers this year. I've got a year 6 Professor MacGonagall and a year 2 Hufflepuff student.

I'm a new TA and no one has told me I have to dress up... Hmm

@MadMum101

How about Hansel? Normal clothes and some breadcrumbs (or a chicken bone if you want to be weird about it...)

YouBumder · 26/02/2019 07:31

Oh god I can’t stand it. Thankfully my eldest is now in high school and I don’t think the youngest’s new school is doing it!

HexagonalBattenburg · 26/02/2019 07:33

School generally just take a bedtime stories theme and the kids come in in their pyjamas and bring their favourite storybook to cut down on the competitive costuming issues.

This year though DD1's year group are the only group doing a Roald Dahl dress up as it links with their topic... I'd be fucked off - but thankfully my mum had already found a BFG costume reduced last year after World Book Day so that's that one sorted.

Cuntforthebutter · 26/02/2019 07:35

DD (4) is going as the Very Hungry Caterpillar

ZebraOwl · 26/02/2019 07:39

@KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree

You can do a penguin v easily if you’ve a black top (ideally a hoody): white oval of paper safety-pinned/sewn to the front & then there are lots of free printable penguin masks available online. If you can afford it; have that bit of extra time; there’s no need for changing shoes other than at home; & it’ll (likely) be dry you could make wee “flippers” from orange card to go over shoes, too.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/02/2019 07:42

The dinosaur that pooped. Means I can recycle the dinosaur hoody and tail that he already has

Having had moans about World BooK Day costumes our school announced that it had switched to the word idea and don’t buy a costume. Super.... but.... now we have had a letter explaining this with examples of the people dressed up as worlds whose costumes are really elaborate and would require loads of materials and skill. Plus it says ‘if they have a costume and want to wear one they can but don’t buy one’. Oh okay then we’ll just be the meany parents who say ‘as you’ve grown you can’t have one’. Our school doesn’t do WBD on the actual day so there cue a rush to the shops. My two though did use their own clothes for once ... we had one all dressed in blue and one in red with ‘magne’ and ‘tic’ and one in a football kit with a word from Jamie Johnson

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 26/02/2019 07:45

I'm planning on sending DD in a onesie as a character from Midnight Gang. I've had enough of this bollocks now - schools are very free with other people's money and seemingly have no idea that some parents don't have lots of time and money to get creative and maybe don't want to go to Asda and waste £12 on nylon tat.

NWQM · 26/02/2019 07:46

P.s one of my 7 year olds friend came up with using the word education and wearing his school uniform. I thought he should get the prize for requiring minimal effort and cost

PunkAssMoFo · 26/02/2019 07:57

We’ve got away with using stuff that we already have most years - princess pearl, silky the fairy, Rosie revere... as previously mentioned.
Also, knowing that wbd is in March every year, I tend to think ahead when buying Christmas gifts. Therefore they’ve had fancy dress items as gifts that I know can be used for wbd. Now they’re getting older and aren’t into playing dress up, I’ve taken to buying books for gifts where the characters can be easily copied. Pippi longstocking and the likes. I’ve so far escaped the wbd anxiety that many seem to dread and try to take a minimalist approach to the dress up part.

Puss In Boots? Jack - or the Giant? Hop-o’-my-thumb? That’s not the coolest name, but maybe he could use the French one if he likes the story? The Pied Piper isn’t really a fairy tale, but lots of people think it is, so you could see if he’d go for that (including offering being a Hamelin rat). He could be The Brave Little Tailor? How about the gingerbread man? I know he doesn’t want to be a Prince, but would he be a Bluebird? Pinocchio?

Have had v little sleep due to rather a lot of pain, sorry, so am struggling to think. Russian fairytales are very Prince-heavy when it comes to the male characters. Lots of Ivans, too. Ivan Tsareviches all over the shop. Could he be bribed into Princedom with an Easter Firebird egg to tote about for the day?

Letthemysterybe · 26/02/2019 08:33

@MadMum101

A frog? A troll? A dragon?

Clutterbugsmum · 26/02/2019 10:06

My dc school has decided everyone will as some from a book. Unfortunately they haven't told us what book they are using.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 26/02/2019 15:49

DD3 wants to go as Amber from midnight gang which might be difficult as Amber has broken both arms and legs so needs to be pushed around in a wheelchair 🙈

madmum what about a pig or goat?

My dds are going as Robin Hood and a dalmation.

DelurkingAJ · 27/02/2019 16:21

DS1 is going as George from George’s Marvellous Medicine. DH is sourcing a brown plastic bottle and all is well in my world.

Vanillaradio · 27/02/2019 16:32

5 year old ds hates dressing up! We are reading Fantastic Mr Fox at the moment so may be able to get him into either that or Stick Man costume if any left, otherwise it will be a Gruffalo T-shirt like the last 2 years...

WatchingTheWheels85 · 27/02/2019 16:59

Dd8 is going as Anne from famous five. Ds6 is going as burglar Bill.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 27/02/2019 17:01

Thor.A comic is a book right? Smile

teyem · 27/02/2019 17:01

They are going as those great literary characters, Chewbacca and Batman.

happymummy12345 · 27/02/2019 17:04

Last year my son went as chase from paw patrol.
No idea what to send him as this year.
Just been to Asda and there isn't much choice for boys. He's 3 and a half.
There is postman pat which would work. Or dh wants to send him in as Batman. I don't think that's appropriate for his age, even though he recognises the Batman sign on clothes and things.
His favourite book at the moment is one he got from nursery for Christmas about a jumper. I was seriously considering trying to find a stripy jumper and sending him in that. But thought it's not really a character is it?
