I am watching Clue for the first time. Tim curry is amazing in it. Its made me proper laugh out loud a couple of times.
What other old films have been forgotten that I might enjoy? I need some light watching :-)

OP posts:

Oh, yes, Dogma, very astute and very, very funny.

Galaxy Quest, very enjoyable, about a bunch of Comincon hawking actors of an old SciFi soap that was long discontinued, who are abducted by aliens. You wouldn't think it was funny, but it's so good.

Snowcake, a man picks up a hitchhiker, they get in an accident where the girl hitchhiker dies and he goes to visit her mum, unbeknownst to him she's got autism and behaves quite unexpected. Lovely story, tearful and funny. The comic book scrabble scene is fab.

Oh, and the Search for John Gissing - a bit trite as a theme (American highflyer comes to Britain to sort out the UK subsidiary), but it's very funny and the dance scene at the end is to die for.

If anyone knows these films, you will recognise a theme. Grin Wink

MilkGoatee · 26/01/2019 10:19

Breaking the Waves, a Lars von Trier film with the fabulous Emily Watson as a girl suffering from religious delusions.

BringMeTea · 26/01/2019 10:21

@Awrite yes to Raise The Red Lantern. Brilliant.

The Hairdresser's Husband. Seems I do like a forrin film. So many I need to rewatch but some quite hard to come by.

Foreverexhausted · 26/01/2019 10:38

The Good Girl - A low budget independent film and Jennifer Aniston's best film by far not her usual thing.

Lycanthropology · 26/01/2019 10:53

I agree with a PP about Koyaanisqatsi, its like nothing else, very powerful.

Harold and Maude is a fantastic, unusual black comedy.

I'm also joining in the Tim Curry love on his thread. Love him in anything.

Elderflower14 · 26/01/2019 10:56

The Bridge with Saskia Reeve. My Dad provided the horses and carriages for the film...

MardAsSnails · 26/01/2019 11:10

Arlington Road

Nobody has ever heard of it, but it’s one of the few sensible, serious films that I love

DimProblem · 26/01/2019 11:30

And not to forget The Big Blue. Visually entrancing on a big screen, plus Jean Reno and Jean Marc Barre.

KissingInTheRain · 26/01/2019 11:30

Running on empty with river pheneoix
Best movie ever

That’s the fugitive hippy movie isn’t it? It is good, but not my cup of tea.

BartonHollow · 26/01/2019 11:37

To pick up on some mentioned agree with

The Way Way Back and In Her Shoes Toni Collette is a great actress

Arlington Road I've heard of but not seen, it used to come on as a trailer on a video I had

Donnie Darko is still a brilliant film though I think it's "cult" years have faded

Years ago I saw a film called 'Chronicle' in the cinema. The industry has somewhat chewed up and spat out the director since, but at the time I didn't know what to expect and was really impressed by it. High school kids get superpowers.

Tink1990 · 26/01/2019 11:39

Safe haven!! It is so so good but most people have not heard of it!

Celticrose · 26/01/2019 11:41

I also think In Her Shoes is really underrated. Such a great cast (Toni Collette, Cameron Diaz, Shirley McLaine) and a warm, funny storyline that doesn't veer into (too) cheesy - love it." I absolutely love this film, was expecting an ok but run of the mill romcom/women's buddy film it's SO much more!

This I love this film

Also love Other people's lives even though it has sub titles and was quite long

HotSauceCommittee · 26/01/2019 11:43

Another one for “Withnail and I”. Donnie Darko, The Craft, Heathers.

Celticrose · 26/01/2019 11:44

Sorry meant the Lives of Others don't know why I keep calling it that Blush

MrsChollySawcutt · 26/01/2019 11:59

Empire Records - oft quoted in our house

'Damn the man, save the empire'

'Oh Rexy, you're so sexy'

Cracking soundtrack too..

MrsChollySawcutt · 26/01/2019 12:05

Oh and Project Almanac, a rare movie liked by all the family. Teenage brother & sister are clearing out the attic ready to sell the family home and find their deceased Dad's video camera. Cue a really interesting time jumping tale...

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 26/01/2019 12:05

I love Showgirls too. I discovered there's a sequel but too scared to watch it.
I've gone through a phase of tracking down some films either on DVD or Amazon. Such as
Boys Don't Cry
Sleepers
The Delinquents
Boyz in the hood
Friday
Jack and Sarah
The Boy Who Could Fly
Working Girl
Scum (both versions)
Ghost and the Darkness
The Edge
The Entity
My Left Foot
Cocoon 1 and 2
Three Men and a little lady
Maximum Overdrive
ID
Great Balls of Fire
Made in America
Stigmata
Bless the Child
Romper Stomper
Howard the Duck
Jacob's ladder
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Let him have it.
The Krays (Kemp brother's)
Little Voice
Tyrannosaur
Rita Sue and Bob too
Human Traffic

My parents had a video shop in the late 80s/early 90s so I remember lots of random films. Definitely remember the poster for Birdy. Was a naked prisoner crouched on his bed.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/01/2019 12:07

I love Empire Records so much.

strawberrisc · 26/01/2019 12:33

My favourite scene in Clue:

"I am your singing telegram"

Lillygolightly · 26/01/2019 12:33

Nothing to lose - comedy with Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins

City of Angels - Romance about a Angel who falls in love, Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage.

Tim - Romance/coming of age drama with very young Mel Gibson

Twister - just love this film and I can always watch it.

Outbreak - Renne Ruso and Dustin Hoffman

Parthenope · 26/01/2019 12:36

Glad to see others loving French 1980s and 90s. BringMeTea, I think you meant Emanuelle Béart, as Isabelle Adjani isn’t in Un Coeur en hiver (which I also love, and it has that gorgeous Ravel soundtrack).

Anyone else for Trop belle pour toi, Le Mari de la coiffeuse, Les amants du Pont-Nerf, Cyrano de Bergerac, La Double Vie de Véronique, Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud, La belle noiseuse, or anything by Rohmer?

My most obscure love, from 1999, Une liaison pornographique, with Sergi López and Nathalie Baye. Two people get together off the back of a small ad to fulfil some particular fetish, which is never specified, and develop feelings for one another — very tender and acute.

Lillygolightly · 26/01/2019 12:36

Forgot to add my favourite

Crimson Tide - nuff said Wink

CoolCarrie · 26/01/2019 12:53

Strictly Ballroom is wonderful , as is The Dish, The Castle and Muriel’s Wedding, Tim, The Chant Of Jimmie Blacksmith, Breaker Morant, My Brilliant Career, Rabbit Proof Fence, Gallipoli, Romper Stomper, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert and loads more. Australia has produced some fantastic films over the years, much better than America.

EnoughSnowAlready · 26/01/2019 13:08

Stranger Than Fiction. I'm not normally a fan of Will Ferrell films as I hate gross out comedies, but this is completely different from his usual fare.

Graphista · 26/01/2019 13:08

"Arlington Road" brilliant film with an ending you see coming but DESPERATELY want to stop!
