The Homesmen - it’s a film about women suffering from mental health issues living on the American frontier. Usually this genre is about men. It’s disturbing and brutal but their lives so often were. It is a western but so different to any other I have seen its a very interesting film

Dear Frankie - such a touching film sad a funny

My Cousin Vinny and Midnight Run both brilliant comedies

Wadjda - a Saudi film about a young rebellious girl. It’s a fantastic film shows that women in such countries are not subservient as many presume them to be but just as opinionated and strong as western women just society keeps them down. It’s funny and very touching

Playing one of those list things on Facebook "acclaimed films" and another came up

Critically acclaimed yet few have seen (I only watched it as it was suggested to me in relation to a module I was doing at uni)

Dogville - really hard to explain with out spoilering but basically a stripped down film in terms of scenery so that all that really exists is the narrative and the acting. I loved it. A woman on the run from the mob takes refuge in a small town but their help becomes twisted & conditional. TW for victims of sexual assault.

"I liked Arlington Road too Graphista and agree that you can see the ending coming but think 'please, no.'

I haven't been through the whole thread - just the last page - but yes to TheRattleBag's choices of White Palace - I really like James Spader - and Dancing Queen with Rik Mayall and Helena Bonham Carter. It's lovely.

And also La Reine Margot and The Horseman On The Roof from EnoughSnowAlready's list. I like lots of things in La Reine but particularly a scene where a phial of poison is passing through lots of different hands and you're not sure where it's going to end up.

I'm going to have a look at the full list now.

The Magdalene Sisters directed by Peter Mullen. My great aunt died in November and we found out she spent 4 years in a Laundry in Limerick. She was so feisty and fierce which my uncle said she became when she entered it. He grew up with her and said she was very quiet and shy. She seemed to drop off the face of the earth and had a different personality when she reappeared. He didn't know for a while that she'd been raped by a farm hand and had a stillborn AND was forced to stay in the laundry anyway. She never had another baby and was probably left infertile after giving birth. She watched this film and told my uncle that all 3 of the main characters matched her experience there. She may have contributed to a film called Sex in a Cold Climate as details about it and arranging a phone call were found in a folder in her office. She became an accountant and was still working a week before she died.

@EnthusiasmDisturbed. Glad someone else mentioned Dear Frankie. You describe it perfectly. Ds2 is deaf and he got very emotional watching it. We got quite a surprise when Susie Sweet from Balamory popped up!! 🤣 🤣

The fundamentals of caring - Paul Rudd is great, think it's a Netflix one

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Javier bardem in a comedy. Only downside is its a woody Allen film

No country for old men

There will be blood

Just also want to third the way way back and little miss sunshine

The Invention of Lying.

I love Clue - great under-appreciated cult classic

Has anyone ever seen "Monster Squad" - I've always loved this movie which is definitely not appreciated (possibly not even heard of?). It's just fun.
