I am watching Clue for the first time. Tim curry is amazing in it. Its made me proper laugh out loud a couple of times.
What other old films have been forgotten that I might enjoy? I need some light watching :-)

OP posts:

Agree The way way back is excellent. I struggled to like it at first as I adore Steve Carrel and he plays a horrible character

Truman Show

Very cheesy but Gladiator Grin I watch it religiously every year.

A Good Year. I have a serious crush on Marion Cottilard

Son of Rambo

DimProblem · 25/01/2019 23:28

I was coming on to say Letter to Brezhnev. Peter Firth was just gorgeous in it.

Also Breaking Glass, bawled my eyes out all the way home from the cinema. In retrospect, I really was far too young to see it. I have never seen either on TV, though I search the planner frequently.

About Time - I can watch this again and again. Ditto Chances Are.

Urwotu8t · 25/01/2019 23:28

Homicidal; a gothic masterpiece, featuring a transgender villain, a fear break, and imaginative use of a stairlift.

Bunny Lake is Missing; The toyshop, the dolls, the bizarre ending scene.

The Bad Seed (original version) A psychotic 8 year old with dangerous shoes.

FlightOfFancy9 · 25/01/2019 23:32

Two lovers with Joaquin Phoenix. Made a big impression on me. I was thinking for days about it and had to watch it all over again. This film is not in any way flashy, but hard-hitting.

Jux · 26/01/2019 00:19

Babette's Feast.
Koyaanisqatsi.

playinthedarkness · 26/01/2019 01:06

California man- as already mentioned
Young Einstein- daft and funny starring yahoo serious ( yep that's his name!)
What dreams may come- weepy robin Williams

playinthedarkness · 26/01/2019 01:08

Taxi- original french comedy
The three musketeers- Keifer Sutherland version

frogface69 · 26/01/2019 01:29

Gosh, lots of my favourites here ! I loved The Birdcage, both versions and a French film called Gazon Maudit. It's daft, but I love it.

Vitalogy · 26/01/2019 02:27

The Birdcage is great isn't it. Here's a couple of clips, so funny, I don't know about you's but I could do with a good laugh.

Graphista · 26/01/2019 03:34

"My Cousin Vinny with Marisa Tomei and Joe Pesci" I bloody love this film! Especially when marisa gives evidence. I come from a DEEPLY dysfunctional family but the plus side is we're all really good at arguing!

"Bill: You have to see the Gambinis in action. I mean, these people, they love to argue. I mean, they live to argue.
Stan: My parents argue too, it doesn't make them good lawyers.
Bill: Stan, I've seen your parents argue. Trust me, they're amateurs."

This is SO my family I weirdly had a very similar exchange with my ex before he met my family (and before we saw the film!), his family less dysfunctional but enjoy a stimulating debate - my lot NOBODY likes "losing" so there's arguments/debates ongoing for years! (Tad outing but one included a trivial pursuit question about cat Stevens - the answerer said cat Stevens but the "correct answer" on the card was yusuf Islam - the questioner denied the point the answerer is still maintaining they earned the point - the game was over 20 years ago!)

I'm a big fan of the film "copycat" with sigourney weaver & holly hunter. I'm fascinated by serial killers & it's a main theme, but also cos I can relate to the agoraphobia.

"Dogma.

Brilliant plot, acting....it's quality." Yes! Love this film plus of course it has the lovely Alan rickman in it.

Long kiss goodnight - some very funny scenes with Samuel l Jackson. Used to enjoy watching it with dd too as we're an "it's just us against the rest of the world" type v small family.

"stepmom" LOVE this film

"Look down the road to her wedding.
I'm in a room alone with her, fixing her veil, fluffing her dress, telling her no woman has ever looked so beautiful.
And my fear is she'll be thinking, "I wish my mom was here."
[Jackie Harrison]: And mine is... she won't." 😭😭😭

There's a made for tv, probably hallmark movie called "the wedding dress" m.imdb.com/title/tt0290104/ it's just a sweet film about a wedding dress and its journey through various couples lives - nobody else I know has even heard of it!

"I also think In Her Shoes is really underrated. Such a great cast (Toni Collette, Cameron Diaz, Shirley McLaine) and a warm, funny storyline that doesn't veer into (too) cheesy - love it." I absolutely love this film, was expecting an ok but run of the mill romcom/women's buddy film it's SO much more!

"About Time - I can watch this again and again." Fabulous film

"What we did on our holiday" - but have plenty tissues handy

So bad it's good - passenger 57, unintentionally hilarious it's SO cliché! Worth watching at least once if only for Elizabeth hurleys TRULY DREADFUL acting!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/01/2019 04:08

Seven Psychopaths - minds persuaded me to watch it and for the first 5 minutes I was saying " this is dreadful, turn it off" but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Brilliant film, amazing cast and really funny.

Moon - also starring Sam Rockwell, who I think is an amazing actor. He is the only person in the film but it really works. I never come across anyone else who's ever seen it. Again, my ds persuaded me to watch it.

Untouchable - brilliant French film. Funny, thought provoking and really well acted.

Years ago I had a bit of a thing about Daniel Auteuil and saw a film called "Le Huitieme Jour" which was amazing. I saw it at the cinema and cried so much that people around me had to give me tissues Blush

PrivateParkin · 26/01/2019 07:18

Another one I thought of is The Hard Way with Michael J Fox and James Woods. MJF plays an actor trying to get a part in a cop show, and to prepare for the role he shadows James Woods' tough guy detective. MJF is totally clueless and keeps getting in the way/messing everything up, and driving Woods mad - but they end up working together to find a serial killer, obviously.
A classic odd couple set up - it's really funny.

HelloDoris I love The Slipper and the Rose - we always used to watch it at Christmas.

DimProblem · 26/01/2019 07:26

Daniel Auteuil was fabulous, wasn’t he? Great actor: he and Emmanuel Béart were quite the golden couple.

BornInAThunderstorm · 26/01/2019 07:35

@TheFuckfaceWhisperer don’t you mean The Officious Seeing-Eye Bitch? Grin

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 26/01/2019 07:52

Another one for Strictly Ballroom, just Tina Sparkles is enough on her own

Netflix gems: God's Own Country (as PP) and Ideal Home - Steve Coogan & Paul Rudd as a couple: it shouldn't be good, but I loved it.

OrgyofSausages · 26/01/2019 08:05

I adore Strictly Ballroom....so marvellous and touching and also hilarious!

has anyone seen Oranges and Sunshine? it's brilliant, and a true story as well, about babies who were born in the 50s/60s/70s to 'unmarried girls' and shipped off to Australia never to be heard of again. Their mothers never knew what happened to them. Many of them were put into orphanages and abused. They were told their mothers were dead, or that they'd been abandoned Sad. It's just fantastic. The film is about a social worker who meets one such adoptee and then slowly unravels this network of covert abuse and adoption. It's so well done, and so moving. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Nothingclever · 26/01/2019 09:00

Bridges of Madison County. Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. My favourite film. A romance.

Hammondisback · 26/01/2019 09:23

Beautiful Girls - Natalie Portman as a child and Timothy Hutton, also stars Uma Thurman. It’s a really gentle bittersweet film, i love it.

EnoughSnowAlready · 26/01/2019 09:36

Daniel Auteuil is my favourite actor. He's incredibly talented and can do pretty much any genre justice.

I second Le Huitieme Jour. it's an amazing film though it can be a little difficult to find sometimes but worth it. I'll post some more of his and some general World Cinema films later once my brain is functioning.

I love this thread.

midsomermurderess · 26/01/2019 09:51

The Full Monty. I know it was massive when it first came out but I saw it for the first time again recently and it is still as sharp and fresh and funny and poignant as when it came out. It's perfectly formed film. You could watch it again in 10, 20, 50 years and it will still be cracking.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 26/01/2019 09:53

I think Withnail & I is actually one of the most overrated films. Sorry.

InfiniteVariety · 26/01/2019 09:55

I love "A New Leaf" (1970s I think) with Elaine May & Walter Matthau. It's a dark comedy about an ageing wealthy playboy (Matthau) who has spent all his money so he has to find someone minted to marry quickly. He chooses a rich but unworldly botany professor (May) with the intention of marrying her then killing her off.... but it doesn't work out like that. Elaine May also directed and wrote the script - she's so talented. I absolutely love it but hardly anyone I know has ever seen it

ParadiseLaundry · 26/01/2019 10:00

YY to The Way, Way Back, The Fall (Lee Pace is something else 😘) and Hercules (cracking sound track!)

I also really love Showgirls!

EnoughSnowAlready · 26/01/2019 10:01

Whale Rider. I know that it was very popular when it was released but it's been a long time and I almost never hear about it now.

Carriemac · 26/01/2019 10:09

Running on empty with river pheneoix
Best movie ever
