He has now been arrested and charged. Not released the reason why yet.

Oh my god. The charges are shocking. He refutes allegations of criminality

That's an interesting line. He's not saying "I'm innocent" he's saying "I didn't do anything wrong"

I've always thought him a smug and smarmy eejit.

I hope those who have made the accusations get the support they need.

KatherinaMinola · 24/01/2019 15:43

Just seen this. Shit.

derxa · 24/01/2019 15:44

I'm not a Scot Nat but I'm quite sorry to hear this. I never had him down as a sexual predator but you never can tell. It takes a lot of bravery for women to bring a case of sexual assault and against someone as well known as AS.

Jux · 24/01/2019 15:49

What a shock Hmm

Jux · 24/01/2019 15:52

Little bugbear of mine. So far he hasn't refuted anything, but has denied lots.

IcedPurple · 24/01/2019 15:57

That's an interesting line. He's not saying "I'm innocent" he's saying "I didn't do anything wrong"

I also thought it was an odd expression. Sounds very much like a 'non-denial denial'. His lawyers will have told him to use that wording for a reason.

KatherinaMinola · 24/01/2019 16:09

Yes, saw that and sadly it does look like he's done something "short of criminal" at the very least.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/01/2019 16:14

I can imagine he is the sort of egotist who probably does believe he did nothing wrong. It will all be the fault of snowflake women who couldn’t take a friendly joke.

I expect he was just being friendly. Hmm

Sending positive thoughts to the women who have reported him. Flowers

MacarenaFerreiro · 24/01/2019 16:18

I am not an Alex Salmond fan by any stretch of the imagination.

I never imagined the charges would be so serious. Although it's never OK to harrass anyone, the impression that was given was that the offences were along the lines of "lecherous comments, pat on the bum" old style sexism.

These charges are about as serious as it gets. Jeezo.

Political prisoner Hmm

Do you think the Ecuadorean embassy could get in bunk beds?

MacarenaFerreiro · 24/01/2019 16:23

Do you think the Ecuadorean embassy could get in bunk beds?

More likely that he'll be looking to his BFF Vladimir Putin for help. Or his mate Donald Trump.

I think a lot of people will ask the same question, he and Nicola sturgeon are notoriously close and he's made no secret he's a huge fan of hers, of course it could be platonic.

And as for his line he did nothing criminal that would indicate to me he is going for consensual.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/01/2019 16:33

I was Shock at the seriousness of the charges too. Even if he is judged innocent (can the courts still use 'Not Proven'?) I think he's finished as a politician now. The publicity will be atrocious.

It takes a lot of bravery for women to bring a case of sexual assault and against someone as well known as AS. Yy to this.

Imagine picking the jury - do you think any members of the SNP will be excluded? What about people that hate Alex Salmond for his politics? How on earth do you ensure an unbiased jury?

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/01/2019 16:39

I thought he had fallen out with NS big time? Is that smoke and mirrors then?

Stardustinmyeyes · 24/01/2019 16:40

Nicola Sturgeon is short, mind you so is Alex Salmond

He's a very divisive figure. The turnout in the 2014 Independence Referendum was 85%. All of those people will have an opinion on Alex Salmond.

Choosing a jury is going to be a nightmare. And it's obvious that they intend to proceed to trial as he has made it clear he intends to fight all charges.

Maybe whisky we are both letting our biases dictate our thoughts....

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2019 16:50

I had lunch with him and he was absolutely lovely

Maybe you can explain that to the women who are accusing him of attempting to rape them? I'm sure they'd be glad to hear it.

Whisky2014 · 24/01/2019 16:51

Yeh i guess so but at least I met.him and spoke to him and am not going to conspire about if people have affairs or not because it doesnt mean anything..
Anyhow, I'd be so disappointed if he has done this but I'd be really shocked if he has. I also dont want to say I don't believe the women though just have to wait and see.

Whisky2014 · 24/01/2019 16:53

You do know people lie about these things Yeh? I can state what I felt he was like by actually meeting with him and actually spent half a day with him. You "watched him closely". You dont have to get arsey with me just because I have a different opinion than you...
