He has now been arrested and charged. Not released the reason why yet.

puzzled It’s very early days so it’s really not to say he will be convicted at all. I’ve seen strong cases result in not guilty or not proven.

Yabbers · 24/01/2019 19:58

I'm on the fence, but the coincidence is interesting.

It really isn’t. No matter when he was arrested, there would be something going on in politics that could be construed in the same way.

I believe another similar arrest was made of a Tory Provost in Aberdeen today, and of a Sherriff yesterday. Maybe it’s their focus this week.

Salmond has always been a sleazy egotist, full of his own importance. Not exactly shocking these allegations are made.

AuntieStella · 24/01/2019 20:20

Anyone who thinks that the Procurator Fiscal would do the Westminster PM's bidding cannot be Scottish....

Have they announced when the trial is expected to start?

I'm with jux in finding his misuse of 'refute' to be grating. Trying not to read too much into his assertion that nothing criminal happened (because to me that screeches 'but something happened that was OK from my pov').

Nicknacky · 24/01/2019 20:25

No date announced but will be a while away.

Justanotherlurker · 24/01/2019 20:26

Some Cybernats are on the defense saying everything from an MI5 conspiracy to mixing of up of sexual crimes with breach of the piece is just trying to sling enough mud etc.

As for NS, I'm not along the murky lines that bluntness is but Salmond is at loggerheads with Nicola Sturgeon's faction of the SNP, which has already bungled and biased its own inquiry into the allegations against him.

Note that the Procurator Fiscal which has levelled the charges against Salmond is controlled by the Lord Advocate, who also happens to be Nicola Sturgeon's legal advisor. A relationship [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Advocate]] by legal experts as "inappropriate" and likely to cause a conflict of interest.

I personally think the breach of the piece could be indecent exposure but I'm in no way a legal bod @Nicknacky ?

I think its brave for the women to bring this forward, and I doubt they are citing this many allegations at him purely for a numbers game.

Nicknacky · 24/01/2019 20:30

just It’s hard to say as it could be anything, breach of the peace was a great charge as it can cover so many aspects of behaviour. But I would expect whatever it is to have a sexual aggravation given the other charges.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 24/01/2019 20:31

I'd hate to be a juror in the case too. But I'd not be swayed by who AS is. I'd want to get at the truth, as far as can be done in such a case.

ballsdeep · 24/01/2019 20:33

Was he the one shagging the es ort????

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2019 20:54

Seriously though, if this is even more than these two women, ie more potential victims, goes back from pre 2009 and forward over several years and even includes indecent exposure through to attempted rape that's absolutely and utterly shocking.

Cismyfatarse1 · 24/01/2019 20:59

Anyone else getting adverts for sexy underwear on the App version of this thread? Not very appropriate, really. Image attached.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2019 21:20

Call me dense, but I really don't get posters elsewhere who insist this is Westminster's doing

Cases like this aren't handled by just one person, and if it were true it would only take a single individual to blow the whistle for Armageddon to follow ...

Knitwit101 · 24/01/2019 21:25

I'm quite shocked by the seriousness of the allegations. I would not have thought he would have taken such risks (if he did). Or maybe he didn't think it was risky (if he did it). Either way I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.

SillySallySingsSongs · 24/01/2019 21:27

Because for some everything is a) always someone elses fault b) Wesminster to them is a big bad monster and is always to blame c) they love their consipacy theories and it is better to spout them than actually face the truth.

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2019 21:32

I'm also really quite shocked by it, it's just another one isn't it, Cosby, saville, Weinstein, it's always men with power abusing it.

Nicknacky · 24/01/2019 21:37

bluntness Any chance of you acknowledging you were wrong earlier?

Graffitiqueen · 24/01/2019 21:45

I’m also really shocked and quite saddened by all this and I really cannot stand the man. I thought he was maybe a bit of a sleaze, but attempted rape?

derxa · 24/01/2019 21:47

I hope he didn't do it. Honestly.

Graffitiqueen · 24/01/2019 21:47

And no wonder they tried to airbrush him from the SNP website earlier this month.

Whisky2014 · 24/01/2019 21:55

it's just another one isn't it well we don't really know that yet. Dont hang him before the hearing, eh bluntness?

Purplepinkpurple · 24/01/2019 21:56

I support snp, yes supporter. I don't however believe in conspiracy theories. I hope that Alex gets a fair trial, and that the press stays out of it as much as possible to try keep it as fair as possible, for both sides.

If he's guilty, then he should be treated like everyone else.

peterpainauchocolat · 24/01/2019 22:08

I don’t like AS or SNP, but I’m shocked he’d be so stupid to do anything that would remotely tarnish him or the SNP. He is a very clever and astute man and would’ve thought he’d have known better if he were to behave in the way it is alleged

Maybe he was just arrogant enough to think he'd get away with it.

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2019 22:11

True, I just struggle with the concept of multiple women clubbing together and lying about something like sexual assault and attempted rape.

I understand false allegations have been made before, but I don't think I've seen something as serious as multiple women joining together to make false allegations of this severity and over a number of years against one man, but yes I agree, we need to wait for the trial.

Jux · 24/01/2019 22:37

Having met and worked (not colleagues) with the man, I can believe all sorts of things about him, ncluding these. Charming was not my over-riding impression.

MacarenaFerreiro · 25/01/2019 08:00

Interesting that his wife wasn’t by his side

She never is. His wife has always been incredibly low-profile and doesn't do the whole "politician's wife" thing. I don't think I've seen a picture of them together for a long time. I would struggle to pick her out of a line up.... Same goes for Nicola Sturgeon's husband, I have no idea who he is or what his name is, just that he's a SNP bigwig too.

Had Mrs Salmond been there right by his side it would have looked a lot more weird as it would be very unexpected. She may well have been there but shunning publicity.

Plus she's in her 80s.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 25/01/2019 09:55

I know a lot of people who have worked with him either at government level or as members of SNP staff. None of them are surprised by the charges - they all say "it was only a matter of time" and that young female staff were warned not to let themselves be in a room alone with him. He was notorious. He was also known to be a dreadful bully to his staff.

That's no conspiracy - the women who have told me all this stuff are SNP supporters and staffers. He's a nasty creep and I'm glad he's going to court. The women who have brought charges are way braver than you think Sad
