Let's talk about cake

Not pies or tarts, only cakes.

I've given this a lot if thought and have decided the best cake is coffee and walnut without walnuts and with an enormous amount of buttercream icing.

I've just had some Victoria sponge and it was better than nothing but no icing.

You are absolutely right. Coffee and walnut for the win.

Alanamackree · 18/01/2019 17:55

It’s a tie between my gran’s fruit cake and my mil’s lemon cake.

WatcherOfTheNight · 18/01/2019 17:56

Yep ,my favourite too !
Closely followed by lemon drizzle, fresh cream & strawberry sponge & chocolate ganache.....I do like cake Grin

Nope, it's carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

TheMagicTorch · 18/01/2019 17:57

Yep coffee cake with buttercream or cream cheese icing 😍 I made a beautiful gingerbread cake at Christmas which was also very yummy.

Knittedfairies · 18/01/2019 17:57

I'm very partial to red velvet with a cream cheese frosting..

curiositycreature · 18/01/2019 17:57

I quite like carrot cake. And red velvet cake. And lemon drizzle cake. And little vanilla cupcakes (even with the controversial butter cream icing). And chocolate brownies. And a nice banana loaf. But I also like coffee and walnut. I’m sure I’d always probably pick a Victoria sandwich if I was in a cafe though.

Chimchar · 18/01/2019 17:57

Good call on the walnutless coffee and walnut. I'm in!

HotInWinter · 18/01/2019 17:58

Can't stand coffee, so never made coffee and walnut cake.....
Made sticky toffee pudding tonight. Am i allowed to admit to that on a cake thread?
Otherwise, chocolate, or cherry and marzipan, or lemon drizzle here.
The kids do badger me for molten lava cakes. Or will you hound me out for that too?

Greenglassteacup · 18/01/2019 17:58

There aren’t many cakes that I don’t like Grin but I had a big slab of lemon Madeira cake this afternoon with a cup of tea. Was amazing

Greenglassteacup · 18/01/2019 17:58

Plain but perfect

fessmess · 18/01/2019 17:59

Really good, well fed Christmas cake for me. Followed by coffee and walnut with coffee glacé icing. Must have walnuts in the cake. Mmmmm

scaryteacher · 18/01/2019 18:03

There's cake and then there's cake. I have been to Vienna twice and had cakegasms as it is sooo good.

I think you have to go a long way to beat a decent lemon drizzle. A sticky pear gingerbread is great, as is a triple ginger and spice cake. My guilty pleasure if I am in my local Spar in UK, is a big hunk of fruit slab cake. Not as good as homemade, but satisfying.

Dh likes patrol cake (a sultana cake with the fruit soaked in whiskey), which lasts for about 6 weeks due to the amount of alcohol. He used to take one to sea with him when he was serving in the RN.

Kezzie200 · 18/01/2019 18:38

Coffee Walnut definitely the best but Lemon Drizzle, Red Velvet, Carrot Cake, Danish Apple or a proper fresh fruit cream sponge... All lovely.

Vitalogy · 18/01/2019 18:44

Oh so many gorgeous ones to pick from. I'd say black forest gateau.

Has anyone been able to make a red velvet without the artificial colouring? I've made chocolate and beetroot cake with is better than it sounds, the batter is the most fantastic colour but of course fades once baked Sad

Armi · 18/01/2019 18:47

I want cake now. I am too fat to eat it and have to eat vegetable matter instead.

I want a big slice of homemade coffee and walnut cake, without the walnuts. I want to be slim enough to eat it without having paroxysms of guilt about it.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/01/2019 18:48

Lemon sponge layered with lemon curd, mascarpone/cream/icing sugar mix, and lots of strawberries.

madvixen · 18/01/2019 18:50

Bakewell cake! Almond sponge with glacé cherries mixed in, cherry jam in the middle and a lemon water icing on top

Vitalogy · 18/01/2019 18:50

Fruit cake with marzipan/icing is very nice too.

isseywithcats · 18/01/2019 18:51

Coffee and walnut, carrot cake with proper cream cheese frosting, chocolate fudge cake melted in the microwave, lemon drizzle, strawberry gateaux , red velvet cake, i would not turn my nose up at any of these, the only cakes i have not liked are the ones they sell in Turkish bakeries they look fabulous but when you bite into them they have absolutely zero taste apart from sugar

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/01/2019 18:52

Salivating:
Lemon drizzle
Carrot cake
Chocolate cake- buttercream icing
(Cream cheese icing is over used!)

KiteMarked · 18/01/2019 18:52

Why did I open this thread, wwwhhhhyyyyyy

I'm in the low carb bootcamp! wah

Vitalogy · 18/01/2019 18:54

Oow coconut.

ComtesseDeSpair · 18/01/2019 18:55

I don’t like cake generally, but I do really love a really dense, heavy, lumpen Christmas/Dundee cake where the ratio of dried fruit to flour is about 80/20.

popehilarious · 18/01/2019 18:55

Coffee buttercream is like crack to me. As everyone seems to be a bit meh on walnuts, would pecans be better?
