Not pies or tarts, only cakes.

I've given this a lot if thought and have decided the best cake is coffee and walnut without walnuts and with an enormous amount of buttercream icing.

I've just had some Victoria sponge and it was better than nothing but no icing.

Belgian buns are skinnier than in Uk and are called Ronde Suisse in Belgium.

Grumpbum123 · 18/01/2019 19:19

Not overly fussed about cake normally but a slice of Vic sponge filled with fresh cream and decent strawberries would win

mrsk28 · 18/01/2019 19:20

Love all cakes but lemon drizzle is probably my fave. That or some sort of banana/toffee combo, amazing!

Would the lemon drizzle cake have glace icing?

Anything without dried fruit pretty much!

Lemon cake
Victoria sponge
Coffee and walnut
Carrot cake

I’m very pregnant (due tomorrow!) and now want cake Angry

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/01/2019 19:30

sex you must roll to the shop immediately, cake has medicinal healing qualities.

Best cake is a good quality birthday cake...plain sponge with jam/buttercream filling and fondant icing.

Sexnotgender · 18/01/2019 19:47

I would if it wasn’t fecking freezing here! I want proper homemade Victoria sponge with fresh strawberries.

theSnuffster · 18/01/2019 21:29

I love my grans coffee and walnut cake. I've been meaning to ask for her recipe and make one myself- minus the walnuts though as I'm not a fan.

A good moist chocolate cake is always a winner- made with melted chocolate, and with chocolate ganache in the middle.

Cmagic7 · 18/01/2019 21:29

This thread is pure filth.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 18/01/2019 21:46

Coffee is awful. I hate coffee. Lemon mings as well. Vanilla sponge is a bit dull. Chocolate fudge cake is the best, esp served warm and drizzled with cream.

TheMagicTorch · 19/01/2019 10:34

@thighofrelief101 that orange cake sounds amazing! X

PatPhoenix · 19/01/2019 10:54

Bara brith [controversial]

The key here is that it underpromises by looking dull but overdelivers by being delicious.

pineapplebryanbrown · 19/01/2019 11:00

Pat I've never heard of that, i also under promise but deliver so this could be my "personality cake" lookswise i am an Eccles Cake.

didireallysaythat · 19/01/2019 11:00

@PatPhoenix do you have a recipe for bars brith?

I have my grandmother's welshcake recipe but not her bars and I miss her and her cake in almost equal quantities...

PrivateParkin · 19/01/2019 12:18

I had to make a cake today because of this thread!! Made a chocolate and vanilla marble cake - it's in the oven right now!

Stormwhale that sounds fab, love banana cake. Have you ever tried it with Daim bars instead of chocolate - I nicked the idea from Bill Granger (I think it was him anyway). The daims go all soft and toffeeish, so nice.

scaryteacher · 19/01/2019 12:32

Ooh, I forgot...my go to cake when I have to produce one is banana choc chip. It has fruit in it, so I count it as one of my 5 a day!!!

pineapplebryanbrown · 19/01/2019 12:33

I had some cherry madeira last night, with extra glace cherries. I love glace cherries. Reminds me of my yoot back in the day.

I'm going to dig out the chocolate orange drizzle cake recipe later and share it.

I went to sleep thinking about the lemon elderflower cake upthread.

isseywithcats · 19/01/2019 13:45

i want to know why everyone keeps saying coffee and walnut cake without the walnuts, that just makes it coffee cake which is a totally different ball game

pineapplebryanbrown · 19/01/2019 14:28

Walnuts make me cough but if they're there and have icing on I'm forced to eat them.

pineapplebryanbrown · 19/01/2019 14:30

When we've done cakes we'll have a new thread with all other desserts.

It has to be done.

OP posts:
pineapplebryanbrown · 19/01/2019 14:32

Issey you may have a point. What about a cappuccino type cake with a coffee sponge, coffee buttercream filling in the middle (a lot) and a fudgey chocolate mirror glaze?

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 19/01/2019 14:36

Our wedding cake was chocolate at the bottom and red velvet at the top. I'm not all that keen on red velvet but that was nice.

The other year, we made dh a gingerbread cake, one layered on top of another, with ginger buttercream sandwiched in the middle. I cut up some crystallised ginger and stirred it into both the cake batter and the buttercream. It was delicious.
