Not pies or tarts, only cakes.

I've given this a lot if thought and have decided the best cake is coffee and walnut without walnuts and with an enormous amount of buttercream icing.

I've just had some Victoria sponge and it was better than nothing but no icing.

date cake, with salted toffee icing. Sticky toffee pudding in a cake...

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 19/01/2019 22:01

Coffee and walnut 🙋🏿‍♀️
Was actually planning on making it this weekend. In the end chose banana bread. Was delicious and much easier to make than coffee and walnut.

Courgette, lime and pistachio cake. Sounds disgusting but is the best cake I’ve ever made or eaten 🤤

My fave has to be apple and cinnamon loaf cake, its lush

BackforGood · 19/01/2019 22:49

@iamboudicca How do you make salted toffee icing please? Sounds yummy.

pineapplebryanbrown · 20/01/2019 00:54

I wonder if a toffee cake is possible? Cake not pudding. A sponge that tastes like toffee with a toffee flavoured buttercream in the middle and a caramel flavoured glace icing on top.

Fay is it possible?

My mum made a cake once that we called "wrong cake" because it went wrong in the best way. She basically emptied the cupboards and threw bits of this and that in.

All the rum flavoured things sank to the bottom and were gooey and nearly crunchy. All the sponge was at the top.

It looked like shit but tasted amazing and she couldn't recreate it cos it was wrong cake.

Lemon and poppyseed is my all time favourite

VeryFoolishFay · 20/01/2019 01:08

Lemon, courgette and thyme was a big favourite at the tea room last summer. And Pimms cake.

I'm sure a toffee cake would be possible. Sponge made with light brown sugar, and a caramel sauce swirled through the buttercream. There's a thought.

tumpymummy · 20/01/2019 01:22

I 💛 cake! A moist chocolate cake or brownie. Also absolutely love cheesecake. Might have to try making the cappacino cake tomorrow now!

halfwitpicker · 20/01/2019 01:29

Parkin. Christmas. Carrot. Date and walnut. Devil's food choc cake aka a good damp chocolate.

AlrightBabby · 20/01/2019 01:31

I made a spicy ginger cake with figs and a whisky icing

That hit the spot!

Bloodybridget · 20/01/2019 01:56

Delia Smith's Chunky Apple Cake is delicious - I leave out the mixed peel, and the original published recipe uses half wholewheat flour, which is really good.

pineapplebryanbrown · 20/01/2019 02:50

Ooh i know what would be nice - a pear cake. Almost like a pineapple upside down cake but with pears and the toffeeness of a tarte tatin on the top. Yes i can see that in my cakemind's eye.

I wonder if a cake could be made as an ode to Earl Grey tea. An airy sponge with something fragrant and sophisticated on top. But possibly the bergamot would make it all disgusting.

Verdict please Fay oh cake Dr.

Wow I thought it was just me.

Yay to the Coffee cake sans walnuts here too! Here is my list of our household cake favourites over the last few months:

-Carrot cake (has to be a specific recipe, with cream cheese and orange frosting, with fresh pineapple
-Chocolate, ginger and caramelised pear cake
-Victoria sponge with Lemon frosting and blueberries
-Coconut and Raspberry sponge
Chocolate and cherry cake. (Bus be dark chocolate with a sort of squidgy fondant middle and served warm)
-Salted caramel and white chocolate cake

doubleshotespresso · 20/01/2019 03:15

Oh and there is a lovely Apple and Oats recipe I found, but I was the only one who liked it

WinterHeatWave · 20/01/2019 05:52

@iamboudicca any chance of a link to the date cake with salted toffee icing??? Dates are something easy to find out here, and DS adores salted caramel. Cheers.

VeryFoolishFay · 20/01/2019 08:27

I offer you earl grey and lemon with white chocolate buttercream. With some dried rose petals. It was bloody lovely.

I don't get the love for red velvet cake. Yes, it's pretty but it just tastes of artificial colouring. What's it even supposed to taste of - chocolate?

Carrot cake with cream cheese icing, black forest gateaux and sachertorte are my favorite cakes

n0ne · 20/01/2019 09:50

And lemon drizzle. And I do love bara brith, come to think of it. Grin

TrickyD · 20/01/2019 10:38

I don't often buy cake but last week I spotted a Coffee and Walnut one in Lidl and bought it. Unbelievably heavenly! Wonderful light sponge which I would be very pleased to create myself and lots of very buttery butter cream and of course plenty of walnut pieces.
We are abroad this week but will be making a bee-line for Lidl when we get back.
