Not pies or tarts, only cakes.

I've given this a lot if thought and have decided the best cake is coffee and walnut without walnuts and with an enormous amount of buttercream icing.

I've just had some Victoria sponge and it was better than nothing but no icing.

This place near me sells a cherry and marzipan cake that's close to perfection. Buttery, slightly chewy, just amazing

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 18/01/2019 18:57

The key to a good sponge, imo, is a fuck-tonne of buttercream in the middle. Hate ordering a cake in a coffee shop and finding they have been stingy with the filling. About 80/20 sponge/buttercream works for me.

And chocolate or coffee all the way.

popehilarious · 18/01/2019 18:57

Proper cream cheese icing (must taste slightly tangy, none of this mascarpone or ricotta nonsense) is THE BEST.

Victoria sponge with raspberry jam and fresh cream. Could eat a whole one with a pot of tea.

My mum used to make an orange drizzle cake with Cadburys Dairy Milk melted on top. It was a little lighter than a madeira cake, loaf shaped. After it cooled she would make slits in the top and drizzle in a syrup made with fresh orange juice and sugar. After that had soaked in enough it would be covered in a Dairy Milk and butter melted mixture. Orange zest went in the batter.

Yes to basically all of these Grin The best cake I've made recently was a Jo Wheatley one - a lime and coconut sponge with lime glace icing - was lovely.

Calzone · 18/01/2019 19:00

Ds says straight up chocolate cake.

He’s 14 and very opinionated about cake.

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/01/2019 19:02

pope no, have thought this through. Instead of walnut it should be very small slightly fudgey coffee bean shapes made out of chocolate fondant.

I'm on a bit of a lemon theme right now....lemon and elderflower, lemon poppyseed. Plus a coffee and walnut. I bake part timr for a local tea room; allows me to indulge without drowning in cake.

thighofrelief101 That sounds amazing. Cake

DelurkingAJ · 18/01/2019 19:03

We went to a wedding in Germany and a between the wedding and the huge wedding breakfast there was coffee and cakes with a selection of about 12 types. It was the done thing to try many...so we did and it was amazing!

PrivateParkin · 18/01/2019 19:03

Oh also - made a pineapple upside down cake a couple of months back and that was lovely! The recipe had a bit of ginger in the sponge, it was fab.

abitoflight · 18/01/2019 19:05

Fay those look so so good 😋

bumblenbean · 18/01/2019 19:05

I’m afraid I must disagree OP. Coffee cake is in the lower echelons of the cake hierarchy.

I second OnlyFoolsnMothers’ list.

I am now off to consume the remaining paltry calories allowed on my fast day, consisting of mince and cabbage. Not happy. Send cake!! Cake

peachchair · 18/01/2019 19:06

I’m on a diet so would eat any kind of cake right now. Mmmmm cake 🍰 🧁

elliesm98 · 18/01/2019 19:07

Sorry but carrot cake is definitely the best

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/01/2019 19:08

Pineapple upside down cake! I forgot about that, that's a lovely cake.

I have never had red velvet cake, is it chocolate cake with food colouring?

Mmm coffee and walnut is my fave.

Milners bakery do a cappacino slice. It's basically a square of coffee cake without walnuts, coffee buttercream on top and decorated with a chocolate coffee bean!

Stormwhale · 18/01/2019 19:10

I made a delicious banana loaf today with chunks of galaxy chocolate in it.

In general though, the best cake is usually the one that's infront of me. Grin

mamaduckbone · 18/01/2019 19:11

I don’t think there’s a cake I couldn’t eat.
Top 5, in no particular order:
Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting
Proper Victoria sponge with jam and cream
Chocolate brownie (don’t really like any other chocolate cake)
Coffee and walnut with buttercream
The lemon cake my niece had for her wedding.

I could controversially throw battenburg into the mix though...

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 18/01/2019 19:14

I make a beautiful fatless sponge, with granulated sweetner- but right now I could really sink my fat teeth into a chunk of chocolate fudge cake, with a side of jaffa cakes and a Belgian bun.

HelenaJustina · 18/01/2019 19:15

Proper fruit cake is in my top five. With carrot cake w/ cream cheese icing, lemon drizzle, decent chocolate cake and cinnamon and raisin loaf from Hummingbird.

DareDevil223 · 18/01/2019 19:16

Coffee and walnut cake is my favourite followed by lemon drizzle.

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/01/2019 19:16

There is a cake i disapprove of, angels food cake. I'll eat it, but it's shit.
