If your looking at Tesco mobile then try the Nokia phones, either the 5 or 3.1 £8.50 or £7.50 a month actually really nice phones. We got DD a Nokia 5 for Christmas. With Tesco you can cap the monthly allowance so they don't spend over that. You can also set limits on content DDs is limited to only under 12s. We also have a paternal control app which means she can't download apps without permission. She has no social media on it, no WhatsApp, Snapchat or Facebook which she is too young for. But she can text phone and email her friends till her hearts content. Which seems to keep her happy.

MigGril · 17/01/2019 20:10

Keep her happy that is.

Rockbird · 17/01/2019 20:19

There is zero point buying a cheap crap phone. It won't work for very long and she'll be stuck with a phone that doesn't do what she wants it to because you won't replace it, or she won't use it. Seen many of my nieces in the same boat. Hence DD1 has an iPhone SE which isn't flash but I know it works and has good parental controls. Doesn't have to be in any way expensive. It was £120 from Envirofone a year ago and she's on a £7.50 p/m goody bag with Giffgaff.

I would def go for an iPhone, whichever model you can get for £15-£20 per month with at least 2GB.

My dd had been using my old iPhone (without a sim) to FaceTime her friends since she was 9/10, we got her a SE on contract for her 11th birthday. The majority of her friends (aged 11 & 12) have iPhones.

A girl in our street has a Nokia brick, she hates it and the other kids feel sorry for her having such a shit phone!

MigGril · 18/01/2019 05:27

I disagree the Nokia smartphone DD has is just as good as my Samsung. In fact I'd be tempted to buy myself one when it needs replacing considering how much cheaper it is. The Samsung and IPhone may have a slightly better screen but at there age they won't notice. And for the money espicaly if they break it or lose or be the target of theaft I prefer not to give them that high end phone.

MigGril · 18/01/2019 05:29

MIL has the Nokia 3.1 looks very similar to the Nokia 5, nice phone.

Rockbird · 18/01/2019 07:21

But an older iPhone isn't a high end phone. That's the point everyone misses. Of course it's personal preference which phone you use but to blindly write off something because you perceive it to be more than it is is silly.

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 07:37

She wo t be using it that much

4 hours a day

IPhone 6s with Tesco £17 a mnth

Nokia 3.1 £8.50 a mnth

I think it depends on how long you want her to have this phone for. If you want it to see her through to secondary school then I would go for an iPhone.

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 08:17

She starts secondary a year sept

OP posts:
Canshopwillshop · 18/01/2019 08:25

So will she still have the same phone? In which case I’m not sure a Nokia will cut it. I know some people will say she’ll have to make do/you are paying etc but it’s so important for them to ‘fit in’ especially when they just start secondary school. All my DC’s friends (aged 12 and 14 either have iPhones or Samsung’s).

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 08:44

So go for IPhone 6s at £17 a mnth seems like a lot but will be worth it contract is 36 mnths

OP posts:
Canshopwillshop · 18/01/2019 08:48

That sounds like a good price for an iPhone 6. Unless you want to do a one year contract on say the Nokia and then switch? Have you asked your DD or don’t you want to involve her?

Make sure you cap the data charges so you don’t get any nasty surprises (like I did!).

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 08:49

She mainly uses phone for you tube

OP posts:
RiverTam · 18/01/2019 08:52

4 hours a day on YouTube for a 10 year old???? And you're facilitating that?

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 08:53

Can get Nokia 3.1 £8.50 a mnth for two years

OP posts:
Canshopwillshop · 18/01/2019 08:56

Ok then how about the Nokia for 2 years and then switch?

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 08:57

Yes more sensible

OP posts:
kittenfun · 18/01/2019 08:57

It gets good reviews

OP posts:
Canshopwillshop · 18/01/2019 09:07

Sounds like a good plan. By the end of the 2 years she will have had a term of secondary school and you can decide if you need to upgrade to a different phone at that time. If so you could maybe buy her one for Christmas Smile

kittenfun · 18/01/2019 09:11

Hi can thankyou can you look online at Nokia 3.1 see what you think
