@Canshopwillshop It's still portable though and an iPad mini, smaller fire 7 and other smaller tablets easily fit into small shoulder bags.

Canshopwillshop · 16/01/2019 09:23

Ok snobby but the OP actually doesn’t want to buy her DD a tablet, she wants her to have a phone which does the same thing as a tablet but is even more portable.

My kids don't really carry a bag other than for school so a phone is easier because it fits in a pocket....and more importantly OP wants to get her daughter a phone not a tablet.

MazDazzle · 16/01/2019 09:49

Those of you saying, ‘just get her a tablet.’ Why? What’s the benefit of a tablet compared to a phone? My tablet doesn’t have SMS, is bulky to carry around and doesn’t have 3/4G.

My husband and me both have iPhones, so when our kids are older that’s what we’ll go for. Really impressed by the Motorola smartphones recommended further upthread though. A great price. Ideal for a first smartphone.

Mine has a 6s PAYG on 02, bought second hand (with 1yr warranty) for £170 and given for Christmas.
She's pretty responsible with it. I live in a city and she's becoming more independent so I felt it was time.

Theonewiththecat · 16/01/2019 10:00

All dds friends have iPhones and they are all 9 and 10.
Dd has and iPhone SE, but it is a bit small.
We got her the best case we could, we bought it from the o2 shop and it was £22 but it has a lifetime warranty, so if it splits or anything she gets a new one. She was slightly annoyed she couldn't have a case from claires but it's tough.

kittenfun · 16/01/2019 10:08

Thankyou ladies IPhone 6s it is 😆😆😆

@PhilomenaButterfly

My kids managed to walk home alone at 10 without the need for a phone. They got one at the 13. And from their jobs upgraded themselves to iPhones.

No need for a 10 y/o to have a phone.

Frankfurt17 · 16/01/2019 18:51

DD has an iPhone 7. She's had it a year, she's 10. Not lost or broken it yet.

longestlurkerever · 16/01/2019 19:00

If she's just turning ten she's a way off secondary school anyway

Frankfurt17 · 16/01/2019 19:25

I don't think it's anything to do with age, it's circumstance. My dd travels on a school bus, getting off at different locations according to activity. It's a necessity!

Getting iPhone 6s £16 a mnth

OP I just got my y6 dd an second hand iPhone se and despite various members of my family telling me it was a bad idea, its been great, she doesn't really use it for anything apart from music (we have an apple music subscription), but once she's at secondary I'm sure she'll be using it for social stuff. She texts me when she arrives at school (she walks alone) which is reassuring. Technology is here to stay and my thinking was it's about educating our children how to be safe and sensible - not preventing them having access for as long as possible. Y6 to me seemed the best time to start and set the ground rules, while she still listens to me! She has very parental controls and I got her a payg sim which has free texts and very limited data (which is switched off anyway, but if she switched it on she'd soon run out).

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 17/01/2019 09:16

My DS will be 10 in April and I haven't even considered that he might want/need a phone! I don't think he even realises what potential they have yet. He has a tablet but barely uses it. If I were to buy a brick for him when he starts secondary school won't the other kids laugh at him?

PhilomenaButterfly · 17/01/2019 09:38

somewhere I'd rather DD had the freedom to text me and say she was going to a friend's or the café after school.

bollocksitshappenedagain · 17/01/2019 09:40

My dd has my old 6. Most friends got iPhone 6 or se in y6. A few got Samsung's.

kittenfun · 17/01/2019 09:41

Am I paying a lot monthly?

OP posts:
500internalerror · 17/01/2019 09:47

Both kids have the £5 a month giff gaff & it’s plenty. But that’s sim only, you’re also paying for the phone ( they have £80 moto phones which are perfect for them).

500internalerror · 17/01/2019 09:48

I like the piece of mind that if they lose them, all I have to do is stop the direct debit to giff gaff. I don’t need insurance on the phones because they’re paid for, & cheap enough that I didn’t need to pay for them monthly.

For a ten year old? £15 PAYG from Tescos

Kokeshi123 · 17/01/2019 12:18

I think we’ll look back at this era with a sense of ‘what the fuck were we thinking’ like we do now about some dodgy 70’s parenting.

I'm reminded of the days when schools used set up smoking zones for teenage pupils to smoke in. The exact same arguments were used to justify this, by the way: "Well, they'll do it anyway, you can't stop them" "It's the way of the modern world, you can't turn the clock back" "If they do it with adult approval they will be more likely to learn moderation and self-control"....

Kokeshi123 · 17/01/2019 12:19

What’s the benefit of a tablet compared to a phone? My tablet doesn’t have SMS, is bulky to carry around and doesn’t have 3/4G.

Because it is easier to limit access and ensure supervision while using the internet with something that is bulky to carry around.
