Mine has a alcatel. It was £25 from earphone warehouse. Basic smartphone does the job.
I've also set a kids pick so she can't download apps, things without my permission

sugarbum · 15/01/2019 12:49

Whatever the cheapest is. From your last post, the Huawei Y6

DS1 (11, nearly 12) has his cousins old Iphone 5 (SE I think) and its perfectly adequate. He got it when he was 10, which was a bit early for our liking but he was so excited I let it go.

He gets the train to school, and he uses it on the short train journey to play games, and uses it most days to tell us which train he's getting home.

I have virgin media at home, so I just got him a sim which is £8 a month and is fine for his needs. Before that I used giffgaff PAYG.

Huawei y6 - 5.7 inch screen
Y7 - 5.99 screen
Samsung j5 5.2 screen

Samsung gets best reviews

My dd started with my old iPhone & eventually bought an se herself. This was three years ago so the age of your child now Smile

When I changed my phone she had my 6s which she still uses.

She is thirteen, 14 in a few months.

We have never had parental controls as we have open discussions about useage etc

She has told me what other kids get up too and kids can do most of this with an ipad!

My tips would be go with what you can afford and what you are happy with.

If you child is year 6 in a few months they will be exposed to all sorts at Secondary school so a gentle preparation may be an idea Wink

kittenfun · 15/01/2019 12:55

Samsung screens are huge!

None. I won't be giving my children a phone until they're 13.
I had one at 11, as did most of my friends, and I believe it has done irreparable damage.

BlackPrism · 15/01/2019 14:32

She's nearly 10? So you're giving a 9yo a phone?

Be aware that children are v savvy at figuring out how to switch off parental controls, check her phone frequently.

kittenfun · 15/01/2019 15:07

As if have said she already uses mine!
I am upgrading my current phone so don't want her using my new one
I am recycling old phone
Would rather get her her own phone

OP you are about to be paying something between £200 & £500 depending on which phone you eventually choose, for a TEN year old child Hmm TEN!!

mejon · 15/01/2019 15:31

If you must get one, get a basic smartphone - you can get one for £50-100 and a PAYG sim. If she's only using it in the house and you have wifi you don't need to be paying upwards of £11 a month on a contract phone for a child to play games on.

Pinkprincess1978 · 15/01/2019 18:53

We got our 11 yr old a a Samsung J3. It was £10.80 a month for two years and he really likes it. I wouldn't get a phone that would cost too much to replace if they broke or lost it.

Perfectly1mperfect · 15/01/2019 19:12

My 9, nearly 10 year old got an iPhone for Xmas. She wanted one, she'll be walking home from school herself soon so it was time. She's sensible and talks to us so I don't think we'll have any issues. She already accesses the Internet safely at on a PCs and iPad so there's not much difference. No experience with the se but I had a 6s and it was great, she'll love it.

kittenfun · 15/01/2019 19:18

Think I will go for Samsung j5 £11 a mnth

Or huawei but screens huge

OP posts:

I'm so disappointed to read all this. How have we arrived at it being completely normal for young children to have a smartphone? It's really wrong and depressing that you're buying into such a thing.

OdeToDiazepam · 15/01/2019 21:09

I agree this is irresponsible parenting

GetRid · 15/01/2019 21:12

I also find it concerning but once they get to secondary school then all their social life is conducted on WhatsApp. So how do they communicate with their friends if they don't have a smartphone?

FixTheBone · 15/01/2019 21:13

Iphone SE is essentially identical internal spec to the Iphone 6s, the only difference is a smaller screen (and consequently better battery life) and it's a bit cheaper.

FixTheBone · 15/01/2019 21:15

OH, and if you're getting an new iPhone, definitely try and get her an iphone - it means you can share store purchases, itiunes / music / icloud and manage the parental controls much easier.

IceRebel · 15/01/2019 21:17

How have we arrived at it being completely normal for young children to have a smartphone?

Goodness only knows. I'm so glad I grew up with a brick. The pressure to be on social media, always contactable, accessing inappropriate content and not to mention a target for thieves isn't a childhood i'd envy.

OdeToDiazepam · 15/01/2019 21:17

Where is the parental controls over this? Why are we just accepting that 'all ten year olds use snapchat' without stepping in and protecting them from the dangers of social media?

It was only the other day a thread where op found disturbing messages on a group chat between her child and school friends

We need to take responsibility for what our children are doing and seeing online and tbh I think discussing giving a 9 year old open access to the internet with an (expensive) smart phone is lazy parenting and irresponsible

OdeToDiazepam · 15/01/2019 21:18

All a child at secondary school may need to do is text or call. Therefore any cheap phone is sufficient
