Am I paying a lot monthly?

£16 a month is almost £400 over a 2 year (standard) contract. Then you have insurance cost on top of that. Of course it's a lot. Your child is TEN!!

CandyPuff · 17/01/2019 12:35

Can anyone link to the Motorola phones? And what is giffgaff?

Looking for something for 8 yo dd (the HORROR!)

tootyfruitypickle · 17/01/2019 12:35

I don't think having a mobile phone at 10 is quite the same as taking up smoking in your teens!

bollocksitshappenedagain · 17/01/2019 12:43

@CandyPuff Giffgaff are a sim only contract provider - usually very reasonable priced as are plusnet

CandyPuff · 17/01/2019 12:47

bollocks thanks...I was just googling Giffgaff. Looks ace, plus they sell refurbished phones. Brilliant option for providing kids phones.

I would prefer dd to have a phone to a tablet, as I will inevitably end up carrying it!

IMO providing a phone is not 'bad parenting..control usage of IS. It's the same with a tv, huh?

You would be mad to buy her a NEW iPhone. And pay that much on contract.

A second-hand iPhone, if you must do Apple, is a much better solution. With the cheapest PAYG offer you can find.

Or one of the previously mentioned phones. I recommend the Moto Gs very much, cheap enough to buy outright and then get a very cheap deal.

Why you'd spend £400 over the life of a contract, I don't know.

Starlight90 · 17/01/2019 17:25

Im paying £12 a month for DS phone. He’s 10 (11 in 3 months) and uses his for data really. We travel a lot and he watches yiu tube and footy things on his IPhone 5C. It 4/5th hand now and really on its last legs. I’ll Possibly upgrade in September so he can have my IPhone 5.

kittenfun · 17/01/2019 17:36

So not much less than what I am going to pay

A senior Silicon Valley exec was recently quoted as saying that she suspected the Devil himself lived inside the smartphone. I have to say I think she may have a point. Do you really want your young DD exposed to all of this?

CisMyArse · 17/01/2019 18:03

She uses mine without parental controls no issues
Recycling mine as can get lots

Naive and negligent.

CandyPuff · 17/01/2019 18:15

the Devil himself lived inside the smartphone

This is just ridiculous. It's no different to a television and a computer. In a handy portable size.

kittenfun · 17/01/2019 18:58

Thanks candy 😆

CandyPuff · 17/01/2019 19:37

Well. For goodness sake, eh

CandyPuff · 17/01/2019 19:38

😄

noblegiraffe · 17/01/2019 19:43

It's no different to a television and a computer.

Mental health problems are on the increase in young people, particularly girls and this has been linked to girls using social media more than boys.

I don’t think TV had that effect.

kittenfun · 17/01/2019 19:44

Have you decided what your getting candy?!!

OP posts:
kittenfun · 17/01/2019 19:46
