I have bought the beautiful notebook.
I have fineliners
I have searched Pinterest.

I have many ideas for things I want to track etc but

I am scared to start.

I am not artistic.
It is the most expensive notebook I have ever bought and I really don't want to spoil it Blush

Well done Happy! My advice is not to obsess about the arty stuff. Mine is very minimalist and functional but I jazz it up with stickers and little bits of washi tape to show the monthly sections. There's no point having a bujo you're terrified to use. If you Google simple bujo writing or similar you can easily learn one or two fancy fonts for headings. Those plus colouring over the day entries will make a massive difference to how attractive your bujo is.

As for washi tape etc I have bought some online from eBay and the Works usually have some in too. Really don't go mad though as I have about twenty rolls and only use about an inch at a time to show sections.

Tonight I've started my new bujo. I begin with my key, future log and a birthday calendar plus a page for addresses and phone numbers. I've also done my January spreads and habit tracker plus a few financial spreads. I will probably add some goal stuff down the line but this month will be so crazy I will simply be in survival mode.

Happyinheels · 06/01/2019 00:21

Thanks Halloumi. I just figured I should take the plunge as I'm overthinking it totally.
My confusion is that I have a diary that I use for so much stuff, I'm self employed so use it for work and clients stuff, I have kids so I use it for that, I have my own stuff and appointments etc and birthdays all in it. So I don't want to duplicate that info and I do need that diary. But I'd like to keep track of fitness stuff, running, cycling, climbing; water intake; food plan... stuff like that. But I haven't figured out how to do that at the moment!
Thanks everyone for sharing, it's definitely inspirational!
Any tips on pens as mine are coming through my Lechturn?

littlebillie · 06/01/2019 00:33

So feel on this last night DD bujo complete with pens and stencils is on the way. I bought a plain book from hobby craft and have a fab night with calligraphy and water colours. This is so much fun!

My iPhone diary does all this, with limitless reminders. I don't get the need for anything else Hmm

differentnameforthis · 06/01/2019 01:57

@Kaybush Good for you. Don't need to hang around here then, hey??

MagentaRocks · 06/01/2019 08:32

@Kaybush so does mine but I still like using the bullet journal. It is helping keep me healthy and lose weight as I have nice visual trackers and it keeps me on track. I mark off when I do 10,000 steps for example and I don’t want to have blank spaces so I make sure I do it. I also enjoy designing the trackers and planners. If you don’t see the appeal then no-one is saying you should do it. No need to comment on those that do, I bet there are things you do that other people won’t want to.

SoupDragon · 06/01/2019 08:55

My iPhone diary does all this

It really doesn't.

sackrifice · 06/01/2019 09:31

I'm quite visual, my phone calendar isn't enough, I put in weekly reminders but I like the visual stimulation of having a book to hand.

I have now got one for work, one for home stuff and one new one for my allotment as i have put 22 beds in, and can track the sowing, transplanting and harvesting, and rotating the crops around the beds.

MinorProphet · 06/01/2019 09:41

sack the idea of an allotment book makes me so so happy. I can't have a veg atch for various reasons but I feel an enormous sense of calm thinking about you tracking your beds!

sackrifice · 06/01/2019 10:13

I have a plan at the front, of all the beds as taken from above.

Then my pages start with a new page each month, will probably be new page each week through march-june.

And at the back, a page for each bed. So I can plot what went where.

AND I leave it in the front room on the side of the sofa so that I can update it at the end of each day.

Kaybush · 06/01/2019 10:35

I will probably get flamed for this as I was a bit earlier, but I've just watched the Ryder Carrol journal overview and I just don't get the point.

I realise this thread is for enthusiasts, but my iPhone diary and Notes facility does all this and more, in the fraction of the time!

I do get the feeling journals are sort of designed for creative procrastination.

Runs off...!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/01/2019 10:42

I have just put the recycling calendar 2019 for my street and house number into the book (It's 104 steps down and up again to check if paper is empty.)

I do not have an alottment - but a seed plan for my terrace / balconies, that's an idea. Thank you! I always get muddled and I want to try potatoes this year.

sackrifice · 06/01/2019 10:44

but I've just watched the Ryder Carrol journal overview and I just don't get the point.

That's fine if you don't get it. Not everyone has to get everything. But you don't have to keep telling us you don't get it, over and over. It's fine. Just stop posting about it. It's really that simple.

littlebillie · 06/01/2019 10:49

Creative procrastination

Actually you probably mean an exercise in mindfulness, which in our society is valued. Also having reminders in more than one place can be useful and diffuses anxiety.

If it's not for you that's fine.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/01/2019 10:56

@Kaybush
If this works for you that's great (I envy you - I tried an it only works as back up.)
Bullet journals are actually recommendend for people with ADHS brains as the open structure and the need to write things down longhand helps to get things into the brain and create structure / habits and destress life. I know it helped my and DD.
Decorating / prettyfying etc. are purely optional and not really needed unless you feel like it.

sackrifice · 06/01/2019 11:04

It's like, whenever I am on a course, when I was doing my degree - loads of people would take notes on their laptops but I had to do a mind map or it shoots straight out of my head. And don't bother with handouts for powerpoint; I remember nothing so always refuse to accept them and make my own notes. Otherwise I will never even remember I attended the session.

wtf2015 · 06/01/2019 11:20

@Rufusthebewilderedreindeer where did you get that notebook?? I want one

AllGoodDogs · 06/01/2019 11:29

I'm loving this! My book is very plain so Im going to cut out my favourite small bits from my colouring books for the front and back and cover with that clear sticky stuff we used in secondary school to pretty it up a bit. I have future planner, week to view for January as well as some functional pages for finances, books /films /music to check out, our 2020 Florida holiday, team TOMM tasks etc. Bought some sticky tabs to mark frequently used pages as it didn't come with ribbons.

ArtemesiaDracunculus · 06/01/2019 12:47

De-lurking Smile I've been following this thread with interest. I started getting interested in bullet journalling a few months ago.

I watched loads of videos in YouTube and looked at Pinterest and Instagram. Some of them are impossibly beautiful. But I'm now having a go for myself. I got a Leuchturm dotted journal for Christmas and, so far, I've set up my calendar, readung journal for the year, a health and lifestyle tracker, and other schedules and trackers - meal planners etc.

Mine isn't very arty, but Im really pleased with it so far. Much better than just entering stuff on my phone Grin For me it's all about mindfulness.

Knittink · 06/01/2019 12:56

I realise this thread is for enthusiasts, but my iPhone diary and Notes facility does all this and more, in the fraction of the time!

I'm not at all anti-tech, but I've tried umpteen diary/calendar/notes apps and didn't get on well with any of them. Quite apart from the supreme flexibility of blank paper compared with an app designed by someone else, the actual act of physically writing things down has been shown to be beneficial.

I do get the feeling journals are sort of designed for creative procrastination.

Whereas phones, tablets and apps never cause procrastination, no siree! Grin Going on your phone to check your diary, but then being sucked into social media surely accounts for more wasted time than journalling does. I'd argue that even time spent prettifying your journal is time well spent if you find it relaxing and a creative outlet. Certainly better for your mental health than Twitter. And in any case, a minimalist, utilitarian journal causes no procrastinating whatsoever.

PattiStanger · 06/01/2019 13:08

I don't have an iPhone but I can't imagine any one app would be able to do the things I've got in my journal. Even if it did I want to write things down. No one's trying to make you change your ways.

Hohocabbage · 06/01/2019 13:12

Thanks Knittlinks I’ll have a look for that.

Hohocabbage · 06/01/2019 13:13

I love my iPhone big time (and mumsnet most of all) but I do know it is a big sook of my time and need some way to ration it this year if I want to ever actually achieve anything.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 06/01/2019 13:14

I've found my people! I have a lovely BJ covered in bees 🐝 I love to doodle and plan, the kids find it magical. 😀

HalloumiGus · 06/01/2019 14:24

I just searched Instagram for minimalist bujo. I really wish IG would crack down on hashtags - because you can list dozens some people totally abuse them and seem really spammy and dishonest e.g. any bujo post will have #minimalistbujo even if it's a 2 page masterpiece by a professional artist. Still, if you persevere and scroll by there are some really good clean layouts for the functional fans.

I also downloaded the Ryder Carroll book on Kindle - it's £2.99. From looking at the IG for RC it seems to go more into the theory behind it all. Like many of you I have tried all the apps under the sun and find them useful in certain circumstances but they don't cover all the bases the way a bujo does.
