Muriell walking past her Mum in “Muriel’s Wedding” and then the happy photo of her her they find afterwards. Just one of many.

I've watched Dead Poets Society after reading this thread and my god I'm sobbing. What an amazing scene at the end though but didn't expect the 'shock' scene

Badmoonsarising · 16/12/2018 11:42

Terms of Endearment, when Debra Winger is dying and her tween son is being horrible to her, and she says "I know you love me" really fiercely so he doesn't feel guilty in the future, because he knows she knows.
OK, I'm practically bawling just writing that!

Beautifully put, have tears running down my cheeks just reading that. Also Shirley McLeans resction when she loks over to reslise she has gone 😢

CupsAndPentacles · 16/12/2018 11:46

I watched love actually last night. Only the hugh grant /martine mccutcheon storyline left me cold. Did they dislike each other in rl?
Teenage dd agreed with me. Her first time seeing film and she loved it but found the priminister and natalie storyline a total cringe

Badmoonsarising · 16/12/2018 11:46

The end of Gallipoli when Mel Gibson doesn’t get the message to the front line on time to prevent them all going over the top to be mowed down. “How fast can you run? As fast as a leopard. Then let’s see you do it then!” Heartbreaking.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 16/12/2018 12:56

Forest gump - "and every night we read a book and he's so smart Jenny. You'd be so proud of him"

ET- When Elliot's mum finds him and ET on the floor in the bathroom and she picks Elliot up and runs away with him. Then ET screams for him holding his arms out.

I think that scene is much more sad than when he goes home.

Sophie's Choice- I don't need to say which scene, surely!

The Reader- When Michael is in the court room and he cries when Hannah pretends she wrote the report because she's too proud to confess she can't read or write. Also when she plays the tape and hears it's Michael reading to her and immediately switches it off.

Friends- When Ross and Rachel break up "without these arms" and when they get back together in the finale "I got off the plane" and the final scene when they hand in the keys. It really did mark the end of an era.

Corrie- "When Haley drinks the drink and Roy says "I love you"

Oh god, this is not good to write when you've got a hangover. My emotions are all over the place! 😢😢😖

When Beth dies in Little Women.

LaDaronne · 16/12/2018 18:27

The end of Cyrano de Bergerac after he's been clonked on the head. ALl those years he loved her and never let on. Sob.

Mewe · 16/12/2018 18:35

When Vincent Price dies in Edward Scissorhands Shock.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 16/12/2018 18:39

The death of the children in Angela's Ashes . Howled .
The bombing of Heaven Street and the subsequent losses, especially of a certain boy, in The Book Thief
Ending of War Horse
Many a book like the Flower in the Attic trilogy, and most of Lena Kennedy or Catherine cookson.

Cally62 · 16/12/2018 18:50

When Meg Ryan dies in City of Angels...

BarbedBloom · 16/12/2018 19:29

A lot have already been mentioned but a surprising one recently was Hereditary. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know. A Star Is Born is another recent one that hurt to watch in parts.

But I was almost inconsolable at Grave of the Fireflies. Best film I never want to see again

Graphista · 16/12/2018 20:59

I'm not one for misery memoirs but

"Many a book like the Flower in the Attic trilogy"

My mum put me onto these. Just utterly heartbreaking - especially when you consider they're loosely based on a true story (bit of a cross between this & Elizabeth fritzl case).

Also my sweet audrina - the reveal! Shocking, heartbreaking and so so sad! Warning - might not be suitable for those who, like me, are csa survivors, rape survivors due to the themes in it.

"When Meg Ryan dies in City of Angels..." Oh god yes! So bloody unfair!

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 16/12/2018 23:50

Oh yes, City of Angels always makes me cry. I bought What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams in it about a year ago. I still can't watch it without crying.

Graphista · 17/12/2018 00:24

Just been caught out. Not really the film but I'm watching point break and the late much missed Patrick swayze character just said "it's not tragic to die doing what you love" Sad

rabbitfoodadvocate · 17/12/2018 00:31

@Lepetitpiggy Exactly what I came on to write! The whole film makes me bawl.

ChickaaaaannDipppaaaaassss · 17/12/2018 01:36

Quite a few of these have got me too.

Blackadder - Where they go over the top
The Royale Family - The Queen of Sheeba episode where Barbara is brushing Nana's hair
ER - Dr Greene dying
Stand by Me - The end when you find out that Chris was murdered
Kes - When he buries her
Eastenders - They did a spin of episode a few years ago about Nana Moon's husband and how he was killed in the war. My Mum and I cried hideous ugly tears at that.
Shindler's List - The Nazi taking pot shots at the prisoners just because he could
Dear Zachary: A letter to a Son about his Father - Absolutely heartbreaking and possibly the most gut wrenching documentary I have ever seen
Drop Dead Fred - Just kiss me and say Drop Dead Fred
The X files - Mulder finally finds out what happened to his Sister and is reunited briefly with her spirit and the spirits of other children. ''I'm free.''
Aliens - When Ripley finds out her daughter died whilst she was in hyper-sleep and that she had promised to be back for her birthday. When she rescues Newt and transfers all that love on to her, only for her to die in Alien 3. Her grief at the funeral was shattering to watch and so well acted.
TWD - Carol having to kill the little girl that has lost the plot
Harry Potter - The Snape scene in the final film. Always.
Casualty - I think it was Josh's family that were all killed by a gas explosion. Horrible.

Graphista · 17/12/2018 03:30

Just been reminded of another-

Life as we know it, the beginning (kinda) which is how they end up with baby Sophie Sad also the scene where the old lady tells him "you have a beautiful family"

Aspergallus · 17/12/2018 06:26

The Red Road

Not a huge film, but it’s very good. If you’ve seen in, you’ll know the scene with the child’s clothes. It would break anyone.

Cakemonger · 17/12/2018 09:44

Toy story 3 when they hold hands waiting to be incinerated

Yes this

Cakemonger · 17/12/2018 09:46

Also the whole of the movie Lion. I was actually dehydrated by the end and had to drink a bottle of water I cried so much.

haverhill · 17/12/2018 09:56

When they take Maud’s son in Suffragette.
Most of Wit (Emma Thompson dying mainly alone).
The end of Shadowlands.
Bing Bong sacrificing himself in Inside Out.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 17/12/2018 09:59

haver, yes- "take her to the moon for me" 😢

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 17/12/2018 10:12

Kramer vs Kramer. Basically all of it, but the scene where he's trying to explain to the son why he has to go and live with his mum makes me absolutely bawl. Brilliant brilliant film.

strawberrisc · 17/12/2018 10:19

Jack Duckworth’s death where Vera comes back for him (it’s on Youtube).

The episode after Rachel dies in Cold Feet and Karen remembers a mundane shopping trip in the middle of the Supermarket and breaks down and cries.

OP posts:
MsTSwift · 17/12/2018 11:19

Oh god Kramer versus Kramer. The bitter fight for that child in the courtroom when his barrister is shouting at her that’s she’s a bad mother and after all they’ve been though he shakes his head at her and mouths “you’re not” god I cried at that before I had kids couldn’t watch it now.
