It's all such a mess. I'm not a fan of Teresa May particularly, but I do think anyone would have struggled to make a success of Brexit after the referendum, so not entirely sure what replacing May will achieve. And also who on earth would replace her if the challenge is successful?

She's due to speak outside number 10 imminently.

I agree with previous posters. I am not her greatest fan but I really don't see how anyone could be deluded enough to think they could do a better job in the same circumstances. No matter who was in charge Brexit would still be the same mess we currently see, it matters not a jot who was 'leading' negotiations.

DeepanKrispanEven · 12/12/2018 08:44

She's only stayed in this long because everyone is pretty horrified at the choice of successors. I wonder if part of her won't be quite relieved to hand the whole dreadful mess over to someone else?

I have felt progressively more frightened about this country's future since the referendum, and never more so than now.

Wheresthebeach · 12/12/2018 08:45

I'm staunchly Remain, but think this is the best deal on the table. Can't stand May, but respect the hard work and sheer determination of the woman.

Rees-Mogg and his cronies are a nightmare. The political landscape is bereft of talent.

My hope is that Europe agrees to delay, we have a 'People's Vote', and the whole thing is cancelled.

But...whatever happens I think we're in for unrest. Bloody May and her cuts mean the police are already stretched to breaking point just when we'll need them the most.

I just wish a Brexiteer had been in charge of negotiations, then at least they couldn't claim someone else would have got a better deal.

noodlenosefraggle · 12/12/2018 08:48

I agree not a fan but I can't see how the lunatic fringe of the Tory Party think this has made anything better. I can only see a hard brexiteers going for leader if she goes. They won't get a hard Brexit through Parliament, so they'll be in exactly the same position. I think she'll win the no confidence vote. If a GE was triggered, I also think she'd win. I am a traditional Labour supporter but have no confidence in Labour negotiating a better deal. If they promised a second referendum, I'd vote for them despite Corbyn and the rest.

StealthPolarBear · 12/12/2018 08:49

Bbc is saying if she resigns we'll ask to extend the deadline

AdamNichol · 12/12/2018 08:50

Try and renegotiate with the EU (can Corbyn/Boris get us anywhere different?)

It's likely that Corbyn would be able to negotiate a different deal (note: different not necessarily better or worse), owing to the fact that he can work in better harmony with lefts in the EU whereas TM finds more harmony with the rights.

I have total respect to her for stepping up to the plate, and getting us through the tumultuous time after the vote.

This is precisely what she has completely failed to do!

user1499173618 · 12/12/2018 08:53

«respect the hard work and sheer determination of the woman»

Determination on the road to self-destruction does not warrant respect.

Russiawithlove · 12/12/2018 08:54

She just said it. This is a ploy to delay or stop Brexit.
We are in a lot of trouble now. I predict riots very shortly.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 12/12/2018 08:54

Short and to the point speech. She sounded fed up and frustrated that she's now having to deal with the leadership challenge as well as everything else.

derxa · 12/12/2018 08:55

DriveAnIceCreamVan · 12/12/2018 08:58

Riots yes, it will unite remain/leave people will fear no drugs and food if no deal.

MsTSwift · 12/12/2018 08:59

It’s a disgrace the referendum ever happened. Climate catastrophe faced in the next decade and politicians fannying about with this?

MissyCooper · 12/12/2018 09:02

Is delaying Brexit a good thing or a bad thing? I genuinely can’t figure it out

noodlenosefraggle · 12/12/2018 09:07

Andrea Jenkins on R4 is just waffling on a load of nonsense. She is just wishing and hoping like the brexiteers have been doing this from the beginning.

Wheresthebeach · 12/12/2018 09:07

I just wish what she said about the Tories was remotely true.

user1499173618 · 12/12/2018 09:08

“Climate catastrophe faced in the next decade and politicians fannying about with this?”

Absolutely. The Conservative Party desperately clinging to an unsustainable economic paradigm and to power. I am so repulsed by them it’s untrue.

StealthPolarBear · 12/12/2018 09:08

Miss the statement said delay or even cancel. Obviously she would say that but we live in hope.

ThankUNext · 12/12/2018 09:08

And David Cameron called for a referendum in the first place to finally put an end to the Tory infighting over Europe.

Pfftt.

Russiawithlove · 12/12/2018 09:09

It's not a good thing. It will cause civil unrest. Already on Twitter saying we are being lied to and taken the piss out of.

DriveAnIceCreamVan · 12/12/2018 09:09

Cameron stated it.

Fucking DUP gave us a hard Brexit, most of NI would accept a border down the Irish sea.

MissyCooper · 12/12/2018 09:10

I didn’t see the statement (missing important news to watch Shimmer and Shine 😒) but I would love the cancellation of Brexit. But delay I can’t decide.

Russiawithlove · 12/12/2018 09:10

You cannot change a democratic vote and be arrogant enough to think you will get away with it.

StealthPolarBear · 12/12/2018 09:11

Which is worse?civil unrest or no deal Brexit.
