It's all such a mess. I'm not a fan of Teresa May particularly, but I do think anyone would have struggled to make a success of Brexit after the referendum, so not entirely sure what replacing May will achieve. And also who on earth would replace her if the challenge is successful?

can’t remember why they started

Generalised frustration + specifically aggrieved group (teen hurt or killed by police if I remember??) + opportunism by others = riot

1moreRep · 12/12/2018 11:50

if there were riots imagine after loosing 50% of uniformed officers how hard they would be to control

1moreRep · 12/12/2018 11:51

it would break the police

Manchester was kicked of by gangsters and criminals, there was no teen hurt etc.

It then escalated into opportunism, whilst it doesn't take much to make people riot, the people who will start the riot are generally not inside the remain camp.

Exactly and Brexiteers votes for this

Anothermothersusername · 12/12/2018 12:11

The woman is a drip. She needs to go.

When Conservative leadership contest is held anew leader must be in place in 14 days. They start off with several candidates and every 2 days vote with the one with least votes being eliminated. When down to final 2 candidates then it goes to Conservative Party Members for final vote. It is good May has been challenged. She is throwing her weight about in parliament. Last week she was in contempt of parliament on one day and then pulled important vote at 11th hour. She should not be behaving like this. We have heard from both Davis and Raab that she appointed as Brexit secretaries that she would not listen to them and kept going behind their back. I am hoping a new leader can either do a managed leave on WTO terms and not pay the £39 billion, just the amount we owe legally. Whilst shackled to CU or SM we cannot do meaningful free trade deals with other countries. As fifth biggest global economy we should be trading more widely with rest of world. We could have 4-8 months with some disruption but can use the money we save to minimise disruption. Figures projected by Hammond now we hear were not even on deal May negotiated but on Chequers which was not acceptable to EU. Yet Hammond
put figures out there knowing they were incorrect. Carney says mortgages will go up if we have orderly Brexit so if disorderly then mortgages will not go up. In long run we will be far better off financially.

Anothermothersusername · 12/12/2018 12:17

^ what Susannah says. The way things are going we are going to end up with a hard left labour government. This is what gives me nightmares. Far beyond Brexit.

DriveAnIceCreamVan · 12/12/2018 12:27

Inconstant gardener comment at PMQ? A man who gave little love to his wife who was having an affair or drug dealing?

corkandwood · 12/12/2018 12:32

At what point can we as remainers say “I told you so. Now you’ve had your fun, the grown ups are coming back to sort out this mess, stay in the EU and get on actually running the country”?!

Yeah, its exactly this sort of arrogance that has hardened the attitude of a lot of leavers.

I am a remainer but if the sheer breathtaking arrogance of comments like the PP above really pisses me off, then it's easy to see how it outrages leavers so much that they think you can stick your people's vote up your arse.

Sladurche · 12/12/2018 12:33

SusannahL the last "hard left" government we had was post WW2 and gave us the NHS and the welfare state, plus rebuilt the county and were voted for by the generation that fought the fascists. This government has plunged us into chaos, lied to us, led to widespread poverty and civil unrest and has fed the far-right with lies and finger pointing at immigrants. They fuelled Brexit. They lied about the benefits. There are no benefits to Brexit. Even JRM says it will take 50 years to see any benefit. They are still lying about WTO rules being preferable than staying in the EU. This is the government that the UN has said has violated human rights. And you're frightened of the "far left" boogeyman.

DriveAnIceCreamVan · 12/12/2018 12:40

This particular hard left Labour party isn't being lead by anti fascism winners like the post WW2 Labour party (the NHS and welfare state came about because in two WWw soldiers were not fit to fight or citizens work) this modern day version is working on playing out 1984.

user1499173618 · 12/12/2018 12:41

this modern day version is working on playing out 1984. That’s where we are now!

KitKat1985 · 12/12/2018 12:41

I don't believe there will be riots for the simple fact that the country is too divided for everyone to join together in mass protest.

OP posts:
user1499173618 · 12/12/2018 12:43

Riots aren’t necessarily people coming together to protest.

MorrisZapp · 12/12/2018 12:44

The whole thing is a car crash of epic proportions but I feel oddly detached about it. Its like watching a film.

AdamNichol · 12/12/2018 12:46

Mass protest is unlikely. Small pockets of pissed off people who thought that Brexit would solve all their problems - only to wake up to find it worse - may only need small sparks for small scale opportunistic looting, etc.

Blessthekids · 12/12/2018 12:49

This is just a complete waste of time. May will win the contest, the numbers are on her side, just look at how long it took to get 48 letters to kick this thing off. I feel embarrassed for them.

Sladurche · 12/12/2018 12:49

We were not the world's fifth largest economy before we joined the EU. If WTO was so wonderful, bilateral trade agreements would not exist. We are already trading with other nations, via the most powerful trading bloc in the world, who can negotiate far better terms with other superpowers than we can on our own. By necessity most of our trade, particularly in fresh goods and services, has to be with the EU due to geographical location. The only countries trading purely on WTO terms are those who are so tiny and powerless that they don't have the clout to negotiate them. We are a small island with few natural resources. We are no longer an Empire. Outside of the EU, we do not have the clout to enforce standards such as workers rights, data privacy and food safety. Countries like the US hate these things and will demand we remove protections for trade deals. WTO has "most preferable country" terms which can and will be used against us in any negotiations post no-deal Brexit. The type of people on the Tory party who want a no deal Brexit are the exact same type of people who want to tear up the NHS, workers rights and public services and move to extreme free-market economics. So far we have been able to avoid that, but that will all change on no-deal. Note that Boris Johnson has dual US citizenship, Farage has applied for his children to get German citizenship and JRM has moved most of his business to ROI. All of them have their money in offshore accounts, so whatever happens it won't affect them, so they are quite happy to sell us to the devil for their own advantage.

ParliamentaryParlourGames · 12/12/2018 12:50

This is likely, many having time off work and drinking in groups!

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2018 12:54

Just a thought here - the No Confidence Vote is taken 'behind closed doors' and TM will address those present prior to the vote.

Maybe TM will be saying something that she learned on her recent EU visit that she doesn't want to say publicly just yet? Maybe this is a political 'stunt'?

Blessthekids · 12/12/2018 12:55

I agree about no mass riots. The Brexiteers I know are over 60, very middle class and so will moan a lot then book a holiday. I doubt very much they will loot.

MasonJar · 12/12/2018 12:59

Great post caringcarer I absolutely agree.
Also we need to be able to employ more nurses/carers from outside Europe as EU workers chose to work in London and other large cities in the UK and avoid the more deprived less popular areas.

caringcarer · 12/12/2018 12:59

I don't advocate just trading on WTO terms but said leave on those terms. Canada has publicly stated they will give us the exact same deal we have now via the EU whether we leave with a deal or no deal. Other countries we deal with have suggested we join their trade organisations which exist on a far looser arrangement with free trade deals widely available. If we are shackled to CU or SM we will struggle to get free trade deals with any country unless they are also aligned to EU CU. The services sector was not included in May's Brexit deal anyway and will continue to trade with US.

user1499173618 · 12/12/2018 13:04

Also we need to be able to employ more nurses/carers from outside Europe as EU workers chose to work in London and other large cities in the UK and avoid the more deprived less popular areas.

Translation: we should pillage cheaper and more malleable nurses from low wage countries was they are easier to manipulate into living and working in nasty places. This is a lot cheaper than training our own home grown nurses.
