Most underrated and overrated TV in your opinion

PawneeParksDept · 11/12/2018 18:27

I'm talking about good TV not shows everyone realises are a bit cack

OVERRATED

This Is Us - everyone shits on about this like it's the most amazing new show in years

It's not as good as Brothers And Sisters was and not as good as Parenthood both similarly themed

UNDERRATED

I never hear anyone talk about Fargo ever and the second series was AMAZING I've just seen it

Parks And Rec

Never seemed to get any acclaim over here but so good and so funny.

Graphista I'm about 6 episodes in to How To Get Away With Murder and it's not gripping me yet, is it worth sticking with it?

KaliforniaDreamz · 14/12/2018 13:30

Pa i rewatched it recently and got really into reading around the episodes (yes i realise that sounds a bit sad) but i started really appreciating the historic elements, the subtle use of music etc. honestly i would like to do a course in it hahahha

Sopranos is amazing. no doubt.

Twisted i enjoyed Ho To get Away With Murder mostly because having a black woman as the lead is pretty exciting IMO. It also reminds me of Donna Tartts Secret History.

KaliforniaDreamz · 14/12/2018 13:30

How not Ho

Thanks Kalifornia I'll stick with it at least for the first season, I love crime dramas so hopefully it will grow on me! Viola Davis is mesmerising as an actress and definitely the best thing about it so far.

DarlingNikita · 14/12/2018 14:17

Mad Men is a masterpiece. Probably the best writing and ensemble acting I've ever seen.

When I watched the last episode I really felt like I'd known all these people for ten years. Was completely emotionally involved and invested. The level of characterisation and development was extraordinary. The dialogue was never obvious and always believable. The production design, clothes etc were right on the money but never, IMO, felt gimmicky or as if people were in costume.

KaliforniaDreamz · 14/12/2018 15:08

Darling you need to fall into this rabbit hole.... www.theguardian.com/culture/series/notes-from-the-break-room

Thanks, Kalifornia.

To pick up on some points

How To Get Away With Murder is overrated if anything - ridiculous overblown soap opera

Scandal

Near perfect in its early seasons - goes rapidly off the boil borrows heavily from the show Alias later on, and becomes ludicrous. Went at the right time.

Mad Men - brilliant and a slow burner but I still haven't finished it because I can't remember where I was up to and rewatching every season just feels like a burden right now

😊

Got to also agree with @PaPica about The Americans underrated both sides of the pond but hugely frustrating to get a hold of to watch

Season 6 concluded the series this year - it was shown randomly and taken off on demand rapidly.

It's STILL not available on Prime and I'm pretty sure I only got Season 5 less than six months ago. AngrySad

Overrated for me:

Vic and Bob
Father Ted
Big Bang Theory
Mrs Browns Boys
Morecambe and Wise
Only Fools and Horses

SharkSave · 15/12/2018 09:06

Just thought of another under rated one, Whites. It was about chefs and had Alan Davies in it. It was brilliant but again don't know anyone IRL who had watched it

Thymeout · 15/12/2018 11:36

Two that came to a premature end:

The Hour - only 2 series but could have gone on for much longer. I think they had trouble with leading actors, e.g. Dominic West, having other commitments.

And True Detective. First series was brilliant, but the second didn't work.

Ayogo · 15/12/2018 11:42

There's a third season of True Detective airing next year.

KaliforniaDreamz · 15/12/2018 11:56

You're welcome Darling

I enjoyed typing that haha

KaliforniaDreamz · 15/12/2018 11:57

Overrated

SUITS

such shit portrayal of women. Ugh. So 2 dimensional.

Lisbon · 15/12/2018 12:14

Underrated

The Shield - it's an absolute masterpiece and manages to keep improving with every season. Also considered the most realistic portrait of US law enforcement. None of the characters are two dimensional and you find yourself adoring someone for 30ms and loathing them in the next 20ms!

The Thick of It - very few shows make me roar with laughter and this is one. Scottish Jamie has my heart

Lisbon · 15/12/2018 12:17

Gosh, yes "The Americans" is amazing!

thenorthernluce · 15/12/2018 12:31

Yes, @Chitterchatter51 ! Love Soup (series 1) is one of the best shows ever. Most people I know haven’t heard of it, let alone seen it. It strengthened my love for Tamsin Grieg, which begun during Green Wing, and has barely waned since.

I donated 99% of my DVDs a few years ago, but that was one of three I kept (the other two were Princess Bride and the 1995 Pride and Prejudice).

diddl · 15/12/2018 16:05

Oh I loved Love Soup.

couchparsnip · 16/12/2018 12:35

Overrated - Omg Breaking Bad was so slow. I tried to watch but when it got to one episode where he spends the whole time trying to catch a fly I just gave up

Under rated.
I really like Outlander on Amazon. Its based on a series of Books by Diana Gabon

PawneeParksDept · 16/12/2018 12:48

@couchparsnip

Though I still watch Outlander weekly, I don't recommend it and don't think I'll ever rewatch from the beginning ever, because of the EXTREMELY graphic and gratuitous rape scene in Season 1

I know people who did not continue beyond that point

Overrated

Another vote for Stranger Things. Didn’t get it. Was a mishmash of too many things.

Underrated

Grandmas House (Simon Amstell wrote and started alongside Rebecca Front. It was amazing)

Cucumber (Russell T Davies drama that was brilliant and I actually think better than Queer as Folk)

Episodes (Hilarious. Matt Le Blanc plays a version of himself that had me in stitches)

whatamessitalis · 16/12/2018 14:20

Agreed.

I loved Outlander, pure escapism. I saw most but not all the episodes so I may have missed another rape scene, but if you mean the last episode, that was hugely disappointment, it made me see the whole series differently.

It was racey, sure, but I didn't realise how much sex was the point. That the final scene between the two enemies would come down to that made the whole thing seem sordid tbh.

I had thought it was a series that had intrigue and swashbuckling with some racey sex scenes that happened to be thrown in, not basically soft porn leading up to rape with some intrigue and swashbuckling that happened to be thrown in.

I've not bothered with series 2.

KaliforniaDreamz · 16/12/2018 14:32

I'm currently rewatching Friends and Matt Le Blanc is hilarious. THe best one in it!
