PawneeParksDept · 11/12/2018 18:27

I'm talking about good TV not shows everyone realises are a bit cack

OVERRATED

This Is Us - everyone shits on about this like it's the most amazing new show in years

It's not as good as Brothers And Sisters was and not as good as Parenthood both similarly themed

UNDERRATED

I never hear anyone talk about Fargo ever and the second series was AMAZING I've just seen it

Parks And Rec

Never seemed to get any acclaim over here but so good and so funny.

Overrated - How I Met Your Mother. Hours and hours of repetitive storylines.

Underrated - Rita on Netflix. The series is in Denmark so it’s subtitled. Rita is a teacher, she’s a bit of a mess, heavy drinker type but the way she handles things when her students need her is superb.

Todamhottoday · 12/12/2018 04:51

Overrated - Friends, The Bodyguard, any celebrity 'stuff'

Underrated - Veep, so fast and funny, Schitts Creek love it, Six Feet Under

Hellomatey001 · 12/12/2018 04:53

Overrated:

Friends. I remember the hype in the 90s and concluding it was style over substance and just beautiful people complaining about non existent problems (eg getting a gold chain for a birthday!). However 20 years later, still relentlessly on tele so what do I know.

Underrated
Binge watched Inside No 9. Still seen as cult viewing but deserves more mainstream attention.

Overrated

Big Bang Theory- hugely popular in the US and predict it will have a Friends style repeats for years to come, but some of the stereotyping (hot chicks/nerdy guys/science fiction obsessed geeks) really seems lazy and makes it already seem dated.

SunshineP · 12/12/2018 05:18

UNDERRATED.... The Middle

It makes me laugh and laugh.

OVERRATED...... so many things.

Longdistance · 12/12/2018 05:34

Overrated- Mrs Brown’s boys. Just not funny.
With Breaking bad, it started off great, but it got dragged out. They could have wrapped that up in 6 shows. I also don’t get Game of thrones, dh loves it.

nowifi · 12/12/2018 08:39

I have seen 15 stories high!

Agree about big bang theory it's just not funny, in my opinion

TammySwansonTwo · 12/12/2018 08:44

So many underrated American shows that are / were great:
The Shield (best TV series of all time, ever)
Party Down
30 Rock
Arrested Development
US Office (first series isn’t great but is short at least, then it becomes absolutely brilliant)
Carnivale
Silicon Valley

I love Parks & Rec, but get that it’s a bit fluffy for some.
I’m sure there are loads more but I need coffee first!

LoniceraJaponica · 12/12/2018 08:46

I just couldn't get into Peaky Blinders. I wanted to like it and watched several episodes, but it felt like I was just going through the motions.

MamaDane · 12/12/2018 08:52

Overrated: Big Bang Theory, Friends, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How I Met Your Mother

Underrated: Farscape

SharkSave · 12/12/2018 09:02

Overrated - agree about I'm a celeb type programmes

Underrated - Rev. Still not found anyone else who's watched it! Tom Hollander is fantastic in it.

Elderflower14 · 12/12/2018 09:07

Overrated. Game Of Thrones... Never watched it. Never want to.
Underrated. Harrow with Ioan Gruuffuud as a pathologist in Australia.
Instinct. Alan Cumming as a police associate.
I'm looking forward to Series 2 of both.

MamaDane · 12/12/2018 09:09

@Elderflower14 how do you know it's overrated if you haven't watched it? Hmm

nowshesaturtle · 12/12/2018 09:10

@lostinjapan I totally agree about Two Pints of Lager. I remember absolutely howling with laughter at the song about knob cheese.

But then I can be very, very childish Grin

Elderflower14 · 12/12/2018 09:12

Just the bits I've seen online. Really don't get it. All blood and swords. Not my thing at all.

TolpuddleFarter · 12/12/2018 09:14

Underrated: Toast of London (I have watched it over and over again and it still makes me laugh.) Pulling - cringe and funny.

Overrated: The Bodyguard or, in fact, any Sunday night drama

MamaDane · 12/12/2018 09:17

@Elderflower14 You're literally judging a show you've only seen bits off. Maybe if you watched it you'd get it Wink Grin Cool if it's not your thing with the violence, but that doesn't make it overrated? Bit silly imo

Scallywag1903 · 12/12/2018 09:26

Underrated
Never heard anyone mention Sense8 on Netflix. Just finished and I really really loved it.
Overrated
Have to agree with Mrs Browns boys.

Bowchicawowow · 12/12/2018 09:30

I agree that Rev is underrated. It was one of my favourite ever programmes.

MamaLovesMango · 12/12/2018 10:04

@bagelbaby The 12 Days of Christine literally took my breath away. I don’t know how they managed to move you through nearly every human emotion in 30 minutes

PawneeParksDept · 12/12/2018 11:37

I think my dream thread ever would be me convincing people that haven't watched Game Of Thrones (and yet still claim it's not good) to watch Game Of Thrones because some of the hype around it has focussed on the wrong things and it's actually an incredibly intricate story.

Yes @TwistedStitch but I only got on to Power through sheer word of mouth so it's reputation is gaining - a bit of a younger brother to the Wire's elder statesman (some clear similarity) but good in its own right too

OP posts:
strawberrisc · 12/12/2018 11:46

The End of the F*cking World.
This is England
Twin Peaks
Nighty Night

sugarbum · 12/12/2018 12:38

I watched a short TV series quite recently - there she goes with Jessica Hynes and David Tennant playing the parents of a disabled girl. There wasn't much fuss about it, but I thought it was amazing. Jessica Hynes in particular was outstanding.

Becca19962014 · 12/12/2018 12:55

Underrated for me would be firefly. I never expected it to be that good.

I also loved highlander the series which i think being run at something like 2am on ITV mid week early 90s really didn't help and quantum leap which again I never expected to enjoy so much. I only watched Babylon 5 for the graphics which were done using a very specific system at the time and was studying software engineering but loved it!

They have their fanbases but are generally overlooked. Firefly was done by joss whedon of the "little known" buffy the vampire slayer Wink and I think suffered as a result of that, people's expectations of it weren't met. Highlander the series most people never saw, now on DVD but only in Germany, has complex rights so no idea if that'll ever go on Netflix (which I don't have so it might be there for all I know). And quantum leap some people found annoying because everything worked out fine - spoiler : that was not always the case. Babylon 5 some viewed as a version of treks DS9 - it's not.

Becca19962014 · 12/12/2018 12:56

Actually highander might have started around mid 90s I can't remember.
