Christmas film adoration and rant!

I love Christmas movies. They are filling my Saturdays currently (tragic).

BUT

I’m getting very hacked off with the ‘re-write history’ ones, as it inevitably seems to say that someone who chooses their career is missing out, and that a —mundane— family life is superior.

They never seem to show it the other way round. I realise that’s not Christmassy, but come on!

They have taught me a valuable lesson though. I’m still single, as I haven’t yet met Santa’s heir 😂

"I’m still single, as I haven’t yet met Santa’s heir"

Your best bet is to go to a charming olde worlde town in the north of America or Canada just before Christmas, which of course, will be covered in snow. On your first day you'll meet a single parent with a delightful child who thinks you're the best thing since sliced bread. You and the single parent will keep bumping into each other, whilst the child takes every opportunity to hug you. At some point you'll all have a snowball fight, which will probably result in you falling into the parent's arms. Along the way will be an older and wiser person who keeps taking the opportunity to push you two together - possibly aided and abetted by an elf or two/Mother Christmas in disguise. There will be the obligatory Christmas tree/house decorating and extravagant present buying scenario. Job done Xmas Grin

Heuschrecke · 26/11/2018 07:29

And, yes, it does all seem so unrealistic with people walking away from high flying careers!

I luffs those cheesy Christmas films!

Heuschrecke · 26/11/2018 07:36

Ah, hang on. I saw one last weekend where the heroine had returned to her ruralish home town for Christmas. She and her family were all the building trade in one way or another - they ended up restoring an old lodge/hotel for the current owner (single parent!) who was an old childhood friend of hers. But she was a director for a big city firm of developers, or somesuch, and while she was away, they decided to open a branch office in a bigger town only 10 miles from where they were and offered her the job as director of that branch. So she got her mundane family life whilst keeping her high flying job!

I’ll book my plane ticket!

Don’t forget the sledging. There must be sledging 😂😂

OP posts:
Heuschrecke · 26/11/2018 15:52

I haven't seen a cheesy Xmas film with sledging in it yet. But, worry ye not - I'll probably be glued to them for the next few weeks Xmas Blush, so I'll let you know!

TheZeppo · 26/11/2018 16:25

The ones I’ve watched recently involve a Prince. Maybe I’m setting the bar too low with Santa’s heir?!

I saw one with Sabrina the teenage witch and Slater from Saved by the Bell as competing toy shop owners who team up to run a rival, evil giant toy shop owner out of town. They fell in love, saved the town/Christmas and kept their toy shops open. I also saw one with Will from Will and Grace as a diner owner, he kept his diner going, Charlotte from Sex and the City who was some kind of city worker (and dead, and an angel) fell in love with him.

The moral being If your job is running a small town folksy business you can keep it.

lesshousemorehome · 26/11/2018 16:49

@heuschrecke what was this one called? i really want to watch it now Grin

AlpacaPicnic · 26/11/2018 16:53

I really really want to live in a shit christmas film. I want to walk into the diner and know everyone by name. I want to fall in love with the handsome and desirable local bachelor who is still mysteriously single or widowed
I want an over decorated house, and snow, and to go on a hayride in a sleigh...

scrappydappydoo · 26/11/2018 17:00

Don’t forget the obligatory kiss in the snow on Christmas Eve/day.

keiratwiceknightly · 26/11/2018 17:03

The trope is an old one. You've got dickens to thank for it. #Scrooge

TheZeppo · 26/11/2018 17:03

Heuschrecke · 26/11/2018 17:34

"The trope is an old one." And, yeah, thanks, keira, we all know that Xmas Hmm

ColinsVeryJolly · 26/11/2018 17:36

Heuschrecke I watched that one last Christmas, it was very good Smile

Heuschrecke · 26/11/2018 17:59

I watched a great one last year. Can't remember what it was called or who the actors were, but :

Wealthy, but quite dysfunctional family went to their own snow lodge for Christmas. Mum, dad, son and daughter - none of them seemed to get on well. The night before Xmas Eve (?), during a heavy blizzard, they had a knock on their door and a family (Mum, dad, son & daughter) were outside saying their car had got stuck in a snowdrift and would it be possible for them to come in overnight. Dysfunctional family says yes and over a period of days (Xmas Eve, Day and the day after) the Rescued Family showed the Dysfunctional family what proper family life was all about! Dysfunctional family turns into normal family. The guest family leaves when the weather is good thanking the other family. There was a twist at the end which I totally was not expecting.

TheZeppo · 26/11/2018 18:39

Don’t do that to me! What was the twist?

OP posts:
Heuschrecke · 26/11/2018 18:57

But .... but .... what if it's on TV again this Christmas?! I can't possibly tell you. I want to watch it again this year!

You know what, Zeppo? You and I are going to have to be glued to our TVs for the next 5-6 weeks?!?!

Andylion · 26/11/2018 19:14

to go on a hayride in a sleigh

That's just called a sleigh ride. Grin

TheZeppo · 26/11/2018 20:29

I shall just have to keep my eyes peeled for it then!!

5-6 weeks of Christmas films 😍

Heuschrecke · 27/11/2018 08:34

I've just found it, Zeppo. It's called Angels In The Snow and it's on Channel 5 this Friday at 1.15 in the afternoon. Don't read any spoilers!

longwayoff · 27/11/2018 08:38

A Christmas Story. Possibly the best Christmas film ever.

Firstbornunicorn · 27/11/2018 08:41

Has anyone seen that one where Santa's evil daughter tries to sell the North Pole to Donald Trump!

DownUdderer · 27/11/2018 10:06

The Christmas episode of ‘When Calls the Heart’ was lovely:)

SillySallySingsSongs · 27/11/2018 10:11

@Heuschrecke that one is good and it is a BIG twist Wink
