Christmas film adoration and rant!

I love Christmas movies. They are filling my Saturdays currently (tragic).

BUT

I’m getting very hacked off with the ‘re-write history’ ones, as it inevitably seems to say that someone who chooses their career is missing out, and that a —mundane— family life is superior.

They never seem to show it the other way round. I realise that’s not Christmassy, but come on!

They have taught me a valuable lesson though. I’m still single, as I haven’t yet met Santa’s heir 😂

I'm really intrigued now. My dh hates crappy Christmas films but I really love them. I like all of the cheesy rubbish haha

SillySallySingsSongs · 27/11/2018 10:29

I love thim. My DH doesn't 🤦🏼‍♀️

There was one yesterday with awful British accents. It was so bad it was good.

Heuschrecke · 27/11/2018 10:42

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't see it coming, SillySally!!

I found and watched the worst Christmas movie ever last week. Santa's summer house. My husband just looked at the tv and me and asked me how the hell I was watching that shit. It was spectacularly bad so I had to watch it Grin

ToastedSandwichObsession · 27/11/2018 11:11

Firstborn I watched that one a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Trump on the golf course was hilarious.

WhoisyourDaddyandwhatdoeshedo · 27/11/2018 11:16

I watched the last part of deck the halls on Sunday. so cheesy, complete and utter stilton

PrivateParkin · 27/11/2018 11:24

There was a great one on C5 yesterday (which I've already mentioned on another thread, such was my love for it Blush) called Stealing Christmas. Tony Danza plays a bank robber on the run and hiding out as a small town Santa. Obviously romance was also involved. That was a good one with some great one liners.

I love the toy shop rivals film a PP mentioned, and also "Mrs Miracle" Grin

Ginnymweasley · 27/11/2018 11:39

Currently on c5 there is one called 'miss Christmas' it's all about Christmas trees. I think it's going to be romance. The main characters name is holly so it should be good.

TheZeppo · 27/11/2018 11:46

I have put Angels in my Sky planner! Can’t wait Grin

It’s a Christmas tradition in our house to watch and mock Christmas Shoes. It’s just the cheesiest, dumbest movie ever about a boy who wants to buy shoes for his dying mom and Rob Lowe is the cold hearted lawyer who learns to put family first. There’s even a theme song and it’s aaaawful:

I’ve noticed Netflix is really getting into the genre. I’ve already watched a prince and pauper type tale where Vanessa Hudgens does a princess swap at Christmas. Complete with the worst Dick Van Dyke level English accent. Plus some trashy movie about a wedding planner at Xmas.

To add to the list of cliches, these movies always have someone who is baking. Whether it’s the protagonist who is a career woman who jacks it in to open a bakery, or the handsome single dad who is running a bakery to support his sassy daughter. Does America have a lot of bakers?

Heuschrecke · 27/11/2018 15:43

I'll have to put the doofah on to record too, Zeppo. We only have Freeview (we're not big TV watchers ChezHeuschrecke really!)

Firstbornunicorn · 27/11/2018 17:36

@ToastedSandwichObsession I was off work sick and it cheered me up so much!!

TheZeppo · 27/11/2018 17:42

YES to the baking! 😂😂

Just seen it’s Buffy in that Angels film. There seem to be a few that are in lots of them!

My personal favourite is the cat in the fire station one Grin what’s more christmassey than that?!

OP posts:
AlpacaPicnic · 27/11/2018 20:36

Ooh, I love the cat in the fire station one! Cute kitty and hunky fireman! What's not to love?!
I also love The Christmas Card. That's the film j want to live in :)

MrsChollySawcutt · 27/11/2018 20:38

I am a secret Christmas movie addict. Think I may change my name to Mrs Miracle for Christmas!

DMCWelshCakes · 27/11/2018 21:08

Judd Nelson has made a satisfying number of cheesy Christmas films.

The one where he's a janitor is particularly special.

Every time I watch them I live tweet them to my best mate, complete with screenshots. Xmas Grin

Nettletheelf · 27/11/2018 22:00

Poor old Judd Nelson, reduced to being in Christmas films. Especially as a janitor, I remember The Breakfast Club in which his character was scornful to the school janitor. Karma!

I will be recording the Angels in the Snow film too, and I usually can’t stand those American Christmas films. You have done a great selling job on this thread.

rockingthelook · 27/11/2018 22:11

Definitely the one called the Christmas Visitor, I think? about a grown up family who don't celebrate Christmas after the death of their soldier son, love it and weep buckets every time!

ToastedSandwichObsession · 28/11/2018 08:44

I've just watched Christmas in Evergreen, it's proper cheesy about a female vet that meets male doctor but she already has a high flying boyfriend in D.C. where she's supposed to be moving.

SillySallySingsSongs · 28/11/2018 09:14

Great one yesterday afternoon with the guy from Desperate Housewives. His DM tricks him into looking after his niece and nephew to try and rid him of the Christmas jinx he thinks he has.

NancyDonahue · 28/11/2018 09:21

Another Christmas movie addict here.

They're always gorgeous high flyers with long perfectly curled hair who 'have' to go back to their hometowns for Christmas as some relative is ill. They haven't been back in years. Selfish bastards. Usually they will pop into the highly decorated general store on the way and be instantly recognised by a pink cheeked plump lady in a gawdy Christmas sweater. It's always snowing and selfish bastard isn't dressed for snow so they trip and drop their Christmas cookies as they go out of the store. A gorgeous widower with a cutesy kid will rush over to help. Lots of cutesy chat with poor motherless child ensues. They then keep bumping into each other at Christmas fairs and meet Santa lines. Selfish bastard helps pick out gifts for poor cutesy child. They go for hot chocolates in Christmas land diner and diner owner gives a knowing smile as he watches them laughing over their cream moustaches. Then a statuesque woman appears and is overly friendly with gorgeous widower! Selfish bastard instantly assumes this is a girlfriend and rushes off to stare sadly at the twinkling lights outside. Then there are a few awkward meetings. Gorgeous widower is confused! Cutesy child is sad. Then - a twist!! - selfish bastard is in the diner when diner owner mentions that isn't it nice that gorgeous widowers statuesque SISTER is back in town for the holidays. What a relief!! Selfish bastard and gorgeous widower have a wonderful reunion under the town Christmas tree while cutesy kid and statuesque sister smile lovingly. And to top it all off, there's a job opening for selfish bastard right in town! More kissing. THE END.

Nettletheelf · 28/11/2018 13:38

There’s one on just now called ‘Snowmance’ (I am working at home with tv on in the background).

Single woman with Christmas tradition of building a snowman with her male BF. Wishes to meet her true love, snowman is about to come to life as a handsome man, HOW CAN THIS STORY POSSIBLY END?

Nettletheelf · 28/11/2018 13:42

Snowman quite handsome but is bound to melt or have a heart of ice or something. Male BFF is unassuming and an artist, although significantly less handsome. I’m getting sucked in, aren’t I?

Myselfonashelf · 28/11/2018 13:45

I gave found my people.
Channel 5 have Xmas films on EVERY afternoon at the moment. If you have freeview there is an actual channel dedicates to the cheesiest Christmas films. It's called True Christmas. It produces the cheesiest films ever!!

nevermorelenore · 28/11/2018 14:07

Think I may change my name to Mrs Miracle for Christmas!

The Mrs Miracle movies are ruined for me because the actress also plays the passive aggressive MIL in Everybody Loves Raymond. So whenever she says something nice, I look for the hidden meaning behind it. Grin

Why are there so many widows in Christmas movies? Something dodgy must be going on in these small towns. I remember seeing an awful one with Hilary Duff’s less talented sister playing a widow whose kid was in a wheelchair from the accident that killed his dad. Jesus Christ they were laying it on thick.
