REALLY Panicking about new blue kitchen

Hi All, we are at the end of a pretty extensive build project. I have spent a year researching and organising my dream kitchen. I’m not usually very bold but wanted to try and be braver than my usual grey so opted for the vision a dark blue and white kitchen.
Was feeling really excited it all, even when it turned up..... but now they have started to install it really isn’t the colour I thought it would be and think it looks way too blue and overall a bit of a design disaster! We have literally spent a fortune on the house and have nothing left to improve anything else. My husband says he likes it (but he says that about everything) and now I’m in proper panic mode!!!
Anyone have any thoughts on whether I am over reacting or if I have made a terrible judgement, what I could do put it right??? Help! I’m really panicking and now feel gutted that rather than feel excited about showing off our new home, I am embarrassed about my design fail! 😫😩🙈

It’s fantastic
Stop worrying

QuilliamCakespeare · 09/11/2018 03:39

It looks amazing. Don't panic. It's probably just the stress of everything coming to a head. It's fantastic!

ElBelle · 09/11/2018 03:47

For the first time I feel actually anxious. We have never really done a refurb of any kind and now done the whole house in one go....... it is certainly taking its toll.
Feel proud of my decisions at first and then literally regret absolutely everything once it goes in! Last pic to show how blue it can look..... I wanted it navy really. Soo hard to select when there is so much choice about everything!!!!

I LOVE it. Life is too short to be boring! Once the work top is on and floor and walls are done, it will look fantastic. Be different. If it changes with the light, even better, I agree copper accessories will look stunning.

Nancydrawn · 09/11/2018 03:54

It's not smurfy at allit's a gorgeous creamy dark-mid blue. I like that it's a warm blue rather than a cold onefar more comfortable for a home-y kitchen. It'll also seem a lot less overwhelming once you start adding lights, floor, dishtowels, teapots, etc. Right now all you see is the blue.

stargazer2030 · 09/11/2018 03:56

Probably nerves but I can feel your pain as I am exactly the same. I think the workman's comment probably didn't help.
It looks gorgeous though. I think when it's done you will love the way the colour changes in the sunlight. Yes please come back and show us when it's done.I am sure there was a similar colour kitchen to this on the George Clarke programme last week. I thought at the time how nice it looked. See off your can find it on catchup.
Fwiw we can't even decide what colour to paint our cream (already in) kitchen / diner and have been sat with a pallette of paint pots on the wall for over 6 months!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/11/2018 04:01

Ok that last picture does look a bit different and isn't navy. I still like it but if you don't then really that's all that matters.

What are your options though??

You're anxious because getting something like that done causes a lot of upheaval and you have (rude) strangers in your house whilst it's being done. Your mind is searching for something to blame the anxiety on and it's picked the colour as the focus. When everyone has buggered off and you've had a week or two to settle down I bet you love it.

For what it's worth I really like it. It's a gorgeous shade and neither too dark or too wishy washy. Check out similar ones on Instagram and Pinterest to reassure yourself. It's honestly really nice.

And pay no attention to the workmen. Doubt they're interior design experts.

LiquoricePickle · 09/11/2018 04:09

Looks like it could be in a style magazine. I love it.

ParisNext · 09/11/2018 04:11

I do this sort of thing professionally and hopefully to good effect...if my tradesman say negative comments about the choice I now know I’ve made the right decision!!! Literally every time!!! If you wanted magnolia walls and slab cream doors with feature tiles you wouldn’t be the sort of person who has this sort of vision. Balance the block of colour with your accessories when it’s dressed and have some confidence. Literally stunning.

Roystonv · 09/11/2018 04:16

Classic yet on trend. I love it. I can see though that the changing colour could be giving you the fears but stay strong and am certain that although it might not look exactly as planned you fall in love with it when finished. Courage mon brave (or something like that!).

Having looked at some.of the thread titles tonight and then seeing REALLY panicking about blue kitchen...
REALLY..I suppose this can be life too, worrying about this kind of stuff!

Igmum · 09/11/2018 04:23

Love, love, love it and definitely yes to those copper accessories. More photos when completed please!

PainUni · 09/11/2018 04:30

Love it. I would never have considered this colour and it'll be so much easier to clean too. You have a large room which can pull this off too

JanetLovesJason · 09/11/2018 04:36

It looks lovely. When we had our kitchen done, I was amazed by how much of a difference the worktops made to the overall look. They are usually the biggest visible surface area (after the floor), so they really change the look. They will also alter how the light falls on the units- there will be more shade.

JanetLovesJason · 09/11/2018 04:38

Oh and workmen love a wind-up, so ignore them.

madnessIsay · 09/11/2018 04:41

I really like this & this it’s better thats it’s not the usual, dark blue/navy that everyone else is going for.

thefraggleontherock · 09/11/2018 04:45

I love it. For what it's worth my SIL went for navy units and it's nice but it's very dark and the contrast with the white worktops is Quite harsh. I think the tone you've gone for is much nicer and will blend better whilst still giving you a contrast.
Renovation is stressful but you're nearly there now. Like everyone else has said, you won't get the full effect until it's finished

PersonaNonGarter · 09/11/2018 04:48

My decorator told me he went home aand laughed with his family about the paint colour I had chosen for one of my rooms. Grin

He was wrong, I was right.

Nagsnovalballs · 09/11/2018 04:56

Workmen are not known for their sophistication. Our spark wears a grubby tracksuit with his bum hanging out. We see him in the pub wearing the same, so it’s not even just his work gear. Does brilliant work and is a good guy, but he’s a the Sun, egg n chips and trips to the Costa del Sol kind of guy.

Why do you care what they think about your kitchen? Or indeed us? Just because there will be more guardian readers here who wear Boden, love watching Grand Designs, holiday in Provence and have impeccable middle class taste sarcasm we aren’t living with the kitchen.

If you hate it, complain to the kitchen designer and demand the cupboard doors are changed. If you went to a kitchen designer that should be pretty straight forward and should be done for free/ small additional cost. If you actually like it but are just scared that people will judge it, then quite frankly you either need nicer friends or need to just own your bold design choice!

ohello · 09/11/2018 05:04

oh wow are you kidding? It's GORGEOUS!! Smile It's beautiful (just like a magazine!) and you did a great job! It only looks so different because right now, it's completely brand new to you and literally everything in there is just blue and white. After you get some pretty things in there and cosy it up, you'll wonder why you were anxious!

But. If you still don't like the way the lighting makes everything look after you've lived with it for awhile, you could hang some sheer curtains up in a light beige pattern or something to change the color of the light slightly as it shines through. Or get some warmer bulbs but I don't really recommend that. Warm bulbs look great on brown wood, cool bulbs look great on what you've got now. If you really must, paint the inside of your lighting fixtures with a glass-safe paint (in a VERY subtle color), that would change the color of the light as it hits the fixture and bounces off. Be prepared to repaint it a few times (paint remover works fine) to get it the way you want. I wouldn't bother though, I really do love it the way it looks now.

Congrats on such a beautiful kitchen!

Your last photo is identifying as your other photos (not of the kitchen) are showing on the scroll at the bottom.

Love!

Randomnumbers7483 · 09/11/2018 06:35

I actually prefer the shade of blue with the Sun on it as I don’t like dark kitchen doors - so with that room and all that light in there I would be very happy with it! I agree that you need copper accessories to set it off!
