A few of you may have had a DH/DP since then. Wink

Not me, quite. But it struck me last night that my favourite fluffy Christy bath towel is now 20 yrs old.

So is a watch I wear every day that my parents bought me.

A couple of baking trays too.

They've stood the test of time.

Can you tell me what I need to add to my indestructible domestic list?

Many thanks.

My parents have had their tumble dryer since 1987- still works perfectly

Chocolatecake12 · 04/11/2018 20:21

My rolling pin was my great grandmothers and is approx 100 years old. She was born in 1900 and died age 98.

TeenTimesTwo · 04/11/2018 20:24

A radio from Christmas 1983.
Cooker & freezer from 1996.
Dyson DC01 from ~1996

SenecaFalls · 04/11/2018 20:25

I have a cast iron pan that belonged to my grandmother which I still use. It was old when she acquired it so my guess is that it is about a hundred years old.

whiteroseredrose · 04/11/2018 20:28

A Kenwood hand mixer from my DstepF's first marriage. Older than me and I'm 53!

frankie001 · 04/11/2018 20:29

My Shaun the sheep backpack!

frankie001 · 04/11/2018 20:30

And lots of vintage clothes, including some gems my Nan hand made in the 40s

averylongtimeago · 04/11/2018 20:31

My kenwood chef I got in 1980 is now in regular use at my DD's. I now have my mil's kenwood maxi date 1986.
My Dyson washer, bought 2000.

I have a mason and cash mixing bowl that was my grandmother's, it's at least 70 years old.
My ironing board was a wedding present: 1979.
Lots of furniture, inherited from DM, who bought 17thc oak in the 1950's, 300 yrs and still solid.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/11/2018 20:34

I still have and use my radio/alarm clock that my parents bought me in 1989. I don't use the tape deck any more, but it's good to know I still could. Grin

I don't know if it counts, because it's furniture, but I have a chair that I still use pretty much every day to get my DD to sit down so I can put her shoes on, and I also have a photo of my grandfather as an Edwardian baby in a frilly christening dress and bonnet, sitting on the self-same chair, which was old by then. I like junk shops and I have older furniture than that, but none that I know has been used for the same thing by my family for so long, and it makes me happy.

motortroll · 04/11/2018 20:35

The clothes airer. I was just marvelling that dh has had it since before we moved in together (14 years ago) and he told me that actually his mum bought it for him when he went to uni! (He is now 40 so def over 20 years ago)

I also have quite a lot of vintage Tupperware from my mum and my grandma.

Hadenoughofallthis · 04/11/2018 20:35

Loads of things.
MIL's old moulinex electric carving knife from the 70s. Food mixer wedding present 23 years.
My mother's dressing table hand mirror from the 1950s.
Was looking through some old photos the other day and noticed dh sitting across the room in the exact same rugby shirt he was wearing holding a newborn dd 20years ago.

LightastheBreeze · 04/11/2018 20:36

A Vax from about 1990 and a DC01 red and purple Dyson, not used much now as I bought a new cordless Dyson

motortroll · 04/11/2018 20:37

@Oldraver we also have a 1993 car that could technically still go....if we put it back together lol

Hadenoughofallthis · 04/11/2018 20:37

Actually, dh also was wearing a t shirt the other day that his dad brought him back from the US. His dad died in 1993 and the US trip would have been at least 5 years before that.
must have a clear out

MyNameIsFartacus · 04/11/2018 20:38

My lovely Bernina sewing machine was made in 1959 and works as well now as when it was new, it's twice as old as me

planechocolate · 04/11/2018 20:38

Kenwood is coming out of this quite well Smile I still have my hand whisk which I bought in 1983.

Loads of other kitchen stuff, most of mine dates from the same era as the Kenwood, and I have a couple of Prestige utensils that must be 50 odd years old, a fish slice and a spatula. My sandwich toaster used to be my mum's and I kept it after she died, that must be 40 years old if it's a day.

My casio solar calculator has been in constant daily use at work for about 20 years.

motortroll · 04/11/2018 20:38

Oh just reminded by another post that I have a 1960s kenwood mixer. I got it from a friends garage sale a couple of years ago. Even has the original glass bowl. It makes me ridiculously happy! Especially when I saw the exact same one in the "modern" house in call the midwife!

LightastheBreeze · 04/11/2018 20:40

Oh and I forgot the kenwood mixer from the mid 80s Smile

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 04/11/2018 20:43

Metallic purple Remington Bigshot hairdryer. It was the last present I received from my granny before she died in 1998. It's on its last legs but I'm attached to it!

Graphista · 04/11/2018 20:44

I don't have anything older than about 13 years due to bastarding OCD.

BUT my mum has LOADS! Mainly Tupperware which she bought as a new wife/mum in the 70's, the usual tubs etc but also a very 70's orange mixing bowl, boiled egg slicer and apple corer/slicer (how is it still sharp?!), a "good" branded bread knife I forget the brand but nobody but mum is supposed to use it but we do - again still incredibly sharp and I don't think it's been sharpened.

She had the same fridge and washing machine at one point for over 30 years till they finally gave up the ghost.

On a safety note a pp mentioned a microwave. Dad made mum get rid of her old one ages ago, apparently older ones may appear to still be working fine but can leak radiation so it's advisable either to get rid or get them checked.

I think her slow cooker - an actual crock pot one - is I believe from 1975! So...43 years old!!

Not only is all this pretty amazing generally but this stuff has also survived over 10 house moves too! (Dad was in army)

Ex-mil married late 60's and I'm fairly confident in saying she will similarly still probably have much Tupperware etc that she bought as a new wife too. When I was still going to her home pre-divorce she certainly also still had a magimix thing, also a crock pot slow cooker, an an electric carving knife from around that time so they'd have been over 30 years old even then!

"Had a brilliant little veg knife over 20 yrs old but it got put in bin by accident and i cant find anything nearly as good." Feeling your pain, due to aforementioned OCD and also a small house fire I've lost numerous things that weren't well known brands or anything but were PERFECT for me and for which I have been unable to find replacements it's so annoying! One was also a little veg knife I bought in one of those "sells everything" "not quite a pound shop" places - that was the fire the handle melted! I've also got a really bad habit of melting colanders by having them too near the hob while cooking and not realising until it's too late 🙄

"Heated rollers that must be nearer 40." OMG yes my mum has "carmen rollers" she still uses (not sure how safe) that she got for her 16th birthday making them coming on for 60 years old! Although I know not the original plug/wiring as dads brother (an electrician) changed that for her when the old style sockets went.

katseyes7 · 04/11/2018 20:47

l've got a Dyson cylinder vacuum that l've had over 20 years. lt's served me well through one husband, six houses, two dogs, and four rabbits. And still going strong.
l also have a baking tray that belonged to my grandma. She was born in 1890,, so it must be well over a hundred years old. l use it at least twice a week, and it's brilliant! Black as my hat, but it does the job.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 04/11/2018 20:48

I've got a Stylophone which is 40 years old and still in perfect working order. I.e makes a god awful racket. 😂😂😂

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/11/2018 20:50

Ex-DH's Breville sandwich toaster from when he was a student in the 90s. I got it in the divorce and it's proved better value than he was!

clary · 04/11/2018 20:51

My dad bought me the frying pan I use several times a week (he died 30 years ago). We also have several other pans from the same fab range that are 25-30 yrs old.

I have had my sewing machine for 40 years tho tbh I don't use it much now, it still works fine for mending jobs etc tho.

Loads of cooking stuff actually such as a fish slice I nicked from a house rental in 1988 and also my mum's Kenwood which is at least 50 years old!

SenecaFalls · 04/11/2018 20:57

I forgot about my sewing machine. It's a Singer Featherweight, manufactured in 1938. I still use it.
